I've felt since the release of Redfall, and Phil's comments about 'games don't sell consoles' that they should fire his ass. All of this cringeworthy, embarrassing, business-naive shit just confirms that.

We have a custom expansion card while they are using a more standard NVMe m.2 SSD slot. No existing drives meet their required performance or physical form factor constraints, but in the long term, their approach may provide price advantage.

As someone who spends a lot of time writing executive memorandums and crafting e-mails to C-Suite, yeah, I can tell you this isn't surprising.

I've always admonished people about the argument from authority logical fallacy.

There are people on gaming forums who know WAY more than the average gaming executive and in many cases many of the inline staff when it comes to the history of the gaming industry, strategy, and historic sales.

Just like you can have hobbyists put together emulators that are better than platform holders (given largely time).

Phil Spencer graduated with a BS in Technical and Scientific Communications. You might as well call that bachelors of science a bullshit artist. You look at his career and there is no reason he should actually be CEO other than the fact that he outlasted everyone else.

He was a general manager in the early days of MGS. Then he became General Manager of all of Xbox Europe... Can you name me the high level of success that Phil Spencer had in Europe? He very quickly rose through the ranks to eventually become head of Xbox. You compare his resume with Jim Ryan's and it is a joke.

It's clear that the "community" he reads isn't Twitter, Instagram or something relevant that would actually give him some insight on the overall console market and general perception of these brands, but it's the purple site and only the purple site. Where you'd think the console market is very competitive based on the general discourse there.

Coincidentally also the largest gathering of their astroturfers.
 
My main worry about all of these leaks is that it puts Phil Spencer in a really bad light, I just hope that he does not resign over this or forced out by MS higher ups as the competition between Sony and Microsoft is healthy (at the moment, if that Nintendo email is anything to go off then sheesh)

They let him buy Zenimax and I'm sure they're not happy about that buy at this point. 7.5 billion dollars that you probably could have gained the same results with a company worth 250 million-500 million. Insomniac has been more productive than Zenimax and they cost 229 million dollars, albeit with IP they don't own.

The Zenimax buy at this point is an outright failure and the fact that they won't release another major game for at least 5 more years is honestly longer than Phil Spencer has rope.

Activision is another white whale. Whether this goes through or not, Spencer isn't going to come out on top. 70 billion dollars and all it will take is one stumble from CoD and that valuation disappears. Have we ever seen a major franchise usurped and/or fallen from grace? Final Fantasy? Gran Turismo? Tomb Raider? Halo? Among others?

But if the deal fails and he loses Microsoft 6 billion dollars plus the damage to the brand in the process? He's out as well.

The board warned him and he didn't listen. The XS has been an outright failure despite the board leaping to rescue Microsoft with billions of dollars in additional investment, and there's nothing to show for it other than plateauing GamePass numbers and a year 3 decline in console sales...
 
First, their million-dollar-retainer lawyers don't know the difference between Superman and Spiderman, and now Xbox management can't even do basic math; how do you get a 30% GPU advantage from a 20% difference in TFLOP rating?

I knew Xbox heads were delusional, but I didn't know they were THIS delusional. No wonder their fans are the way they are.

Great analysis. The board of directors can't be happy with this at all.
 
If he has a better product (and frankly he doesn't) almost every aspect of the PS5 is better thought through than the XS, beginning from a singular sku, to a smarter approach to expandable storage, to the design of the haptics controller, to the reduction in bottlenecks across the design, and even the spatial audio (though we've yet to see that pay dividends)

But again if he has a better product, how does he explain his abject failure?

  • Sony has a baked in consumer base due to digital library
  • Sony is able to get exclusives that he can't afford because of the difference in userbase
  • Sony had a head start of software development

He hasn't fired Matt Booty, which at this point suggests to me that he can't, i.e. he probably vouched for him so if he has to fire him, he's out too. His strategy and approach XSS and XSX, GamePass Day 1, PC Day 1.

He's shit on console gaming entirely trying to jump the gun of being Netflix of Gaming and like MoviePass before A-List... it's not working.

You want to be a market disrupter, especially when you aren't the market leader, but you have to be better than this.
 
Not shocked at all Phil shot this email off as I have mentioned here before a bunch of us were sitting in Discord watching the PS5 tech reveal and Ybarra laughed saying Sony spent way too much money on the SSD solution and the power of the Series X would overwhelm Sony (something along those lines)
 
This explains all the 9 tflops meltdowns and bans back in those days. The astroturfers were getting their 9vs12 tflops points straight from MS leadership.

I was shocked to see just how many of these guys got themselves banned. But then again, why wouldnt you believe the leader of XBox?

Hope this is a wake up call for all xbox fanboys. These guys got your accounts banned for what?

I would have loved to be a fly on the wall in Phil's Gamersnest on launch day when all the comparison videos came out for 3rd party launch titles...
