So is Final Fantasy XIV a flop on Xbox?

If the Xbox 360, with its significantly larger install base, couldn't sell JRPGs(mmo or not), why do people believe that the current Xbox users, numbering in the dozens, will purchase them?

Don't worry it will all pan out in the end. This will sell mad numbers on Microsoft Xbox's next console. It's called Playstation 6.

I don't know what was expected to be honest.

No one can say it's a bad game either. It's one of the best MMOs out there currently and has millions of subs.
because you didn't release it with other systems. Anyone who wanted to play it either got a PC or played it on PlayStation. Stop trying to say games flop when you release it 7 years later on a different console.

As others have said, the fact that the free trial includes hundreds of hours of gameplay will probably have an impact on sales until the new players make it to Shadowbringers, and it took me almost a year of playing the game casually to do that when I first started.

That being said, if it was super popular on Xbox, Yoshi P likely would have said something about it by now.

They release the game late as fuck on the platform. They require you to buy it. Then they ask you to pay a subscription. And you need Game Pass Core to play online.

Shocking it's flopping!

This shit should have stayed away at this point.

Far too late.

I imagine the vast majority of people that wanted to play already bought/owned a PlayStation or PC. It's been out for 11 years (Lets be honest XIV really didn't start until ARR came out) and how many XBOX diehards (i.e refuse to buy a PlayStation or PC) are left that also want to play FFXIV?

I've seen players on Reddit and Twitter mentioning that they're wiping in ARR/HW raid content for the first time in years so I'm inclined to think that most Xbox players are still going through the free trial.

Probably better to check again next month after the new expansion is released.

Since you don't know what you're talking about about, this game has been port begged for years. It finally shows up, and it's not doing so hot. Sorry this news offends you, grandpa.

Everyone who wanted to play the game already has elsewhere years ago.

Was port begged for years and they said NAW. Exclusive so people moved on and played it elsewhere also there was a payment difference if I remember correct something where you had to buy time through XBOX? Anyway glad your have shown your a complete ass. Feel free to bitch and moan cause I won't see it since you're blocked.

Everybody who wanted to play this game, already played it on another system. This release should have happened years ago. Than it may have lured some people into this game. But who starts a years old MMO with a subscription service so late into the cycle?

I have always wanted to try this but I've never played an MMO because it seems like a mad time sink. Maybe it doesn't have to be, though. Idk.

Is IconEra a spin off of ResetEra or Gaf?

Edit: Had a look around. It seems like 3 or 4 guys are just talking among themselves.

It's a timesink alright, but it's more like a singleplayer MMO and it has one of the best stories in the FF franchise, so it's worth at least checking out.

I guess it all comes down to some sort of market established "xenophobia", japanese games just don't go together with american console.
It just feels wrong, just like Shenmue & Dead Or Alive & Blue dragon felt like novelties back in a day... Sad but true, in that light Altus/Sega presence on Gamepass is only playing smoke and mirrors. Maybe in another few generations they will be able to turn it around.

Not to mention Final Fantasy lost it relevance in a long run, what Rebirth clearly shown.

Wow, who would have thought ? Maybe that releasing the game at launch on the platform would have helped building a community ?

Final Fantasy basically abandoned Xbox this gen, and now no one cares when they release a years old mmo. Too little, too late, and has to have an extra subscription.

Square have said they are going multi platform in the future, so maybe they can get some traction with a normal FF release.

It's a Japanese game. There's a reason so many JRPG's launch on gamepass day one.

Because it's not worth porting them to Xbox without a gamepass cheque upfront cause they don't sell. MS has to pay to get them on the platform in the first place.

This is a stupid take, sorry no offense .

I can only speak for myself, but you could download it for free just before the xbox release (IIRC), so I played it for a few hours and basically went "no, thank you". I'm not against playing an MMORPG as such but this certainly wasn't it.

You buy the game and pay a sub fee.

2 sub fees on Xbox. (FFXIV Game Time and GP).

Square Enix just shot themselves in the foot!

I don't know how much the rest of you know about Xbox culture (I'm an expert), but honor and shame are huge parts of it. It's not like it is with Sony Ponies where you can become successful by being an asshole. If you screw Xbox fans over, you bring shame to yourself, and the only way to get rid of that shame is repentance.

What this means is the Xbox fans, after hearing about the 2 sub fees, is not going to want to purchase FFXIV Online for either series, nor will they purchase any of Square Enix's games. This is HUGE. You can laugh all you want, but Square Enix has alienated an entire market with this move.

Square Enix, publicly apologize and cancel FFXIV Online for Xbox Series S/X or you can kiss your business goodbye!

Helping xbox fanbase not to pay for games buy putting games like octopath traveller on gamepass, and then expect them to pay for other games 🤡

Its fucking crazy that they did pay for Persona 3 Remake on GamePass day one to make it worth porting over

Almost all of their big budget exclusive games in the last couple of years have underperformed so sticking to one isn't helping them much either 🤷‍♂️
Square Enix have had stupid projections as far back as I can remember. Like I can't remember a game they didn't describe as a failure at some point

This dude covered it well

Without game pass money, I don't see how Square can make any profit supporting Xbox. IDK how it works out for Atlus, I'm a big Persona fan, I played every entry and always bought the games at full price.
Since they put Persona 3 Reload on gamepass I just subscribed to it to play the game on PC. The game is now 30% off on PSN and I can't justify buying it. Although I must confess I almost did, and I'm a hardcore fan, I can only imagine how it is to everyone else.

Sea of thieves seemed to do pretty well releasing 6 years later on PSN.

I agree that they have stupid projections, but their stupid projections have also led them to make big changes so they're not inconsequential.

They let-go of multiple very competent western developers because of that and have most recently pledged to completely pivot their publishing strategy because of that too.

MS wanted Xbox only servers, SE said no, they stayed in stalemate for a decade, then suddenly MS got on board once the WoW exodus happening and got more invested. Now everything has sorta normalized, and overall it was just a blip. SE clearly thinks there will still be another influx with Dawntrail somehow, and are adding more world servers to the Dynamis DC next week, but Dynamis is largely ghost town DC already so it was sorta a headscratcher move.

While I'm in FFXIV for the long haul, I very much expect Dawntrail to be the SE's Mists of Pandaria and predict a steady decline in overall sub numbers about 3 months after release with some world merges a year later. I'd love to be wrong, but there's only so many hallway trash + boss x3 variants, and 12 team jump rope raids they can add with so little innovation.

I think it's a mix of a few different issues and not just any one of them. the demographic of the players on Xbox, the fact that you basically have to pay 2 subs, and the fact it's an "old game" as in most people who would like to play it probably had gotten into it on PS or PC. keep in mind that FFXI, which is also an MMO, released on Xbox 2 years later than PS and still did well, so it's not like the market isn't there.

MMO always gonna take your time. it is MMORPG. especially with never ending new content added.

but FFXIV is bit different from other MMO particularly Korean who more grindy oriented

this game progress by simply doing quest than grinding on field mindlessly 24 a day. you gained exp by doing quest like other single player rpg. when people play this game, for first playthrough you just doing storyline quest. this game basically single player RPG but with multiplayer element. it is a heavy narrative MMORPG. personally if you can spend atleast 100-200 hours on single player game, you should has no problem with this game.

this game also not type to encourage FOMO or designed player to play non stop everyday like a secondry job. you can play bit by bit 1-2 hours a day and you also wont get left behind by others. you can play and stop wherever you like and return back be it days or months or years.

even the director encourage player to stop play when there is nothing to do and return back later. most of director surely want player to keep play non stop though.

"It's alright not to play it everyday. Since it's just a game, you can stop forcing yourself if it's hard on you to keep that up. Rather, it'll just pile up unnecessary stress if you limit yourself into playing just that one game since there are so many other games out there. So, do come back and play it to your heart's content when the major patch kicks in, then stop it to play other games before you got burnt out, and then come back for another major patch. This will actually make me happier, and in the end, I think this is the best solution I can answer for keeping your motivation up for the game." - Naoki Yoshida

due to this mindset, if you pay attention to Square Enix profit report, one of reason why their MMO section are down is not due it was declining but simply because there is no new content before new expansions and players mostly taking months break and waiting to jump back on new expansion launch.

this is one of MMO that really respect your time IMO. i wont play if it drag my time since im busy with work but keep in mind once you get hooked, you might end up play it nonstop by yourself XD

That actually sounds perfect. I'm going to get to that, I think. Being in an MMO environment with people around will be an interesting way to play an FF game

it is based on my experience and so others might be different. also everyone has preferences so this game actually not for everyone. so dont feel fret if it turn out it is not your cup of tea.

however the base game is bit slog and boring which is one of biggest barrier for new player. the community mostly agreeing on this. lot of people end up drop off there but there is also some people already enjoyed from very beginning. after all the best quality content start on expansion above(which is where the praise is) and the base game quite dated. my suggestion is to atleast finished the base game first but dont force yourself.

my advice for new players is just dont rush and just enjoy the moment. keep the pace as you comfortable. good luck!

there is benchmark for upcoming new Dawntrail expansion with character creator if you interested that come with visual update.

So I'm confused is metric being used for saying it failed on xbox is due to it being on sale? It's on sale everywhere atm ahead of new expansion. From what I can tell in-game on crystal data center the game has had huge influx of new players (could be from PS/PC as well). I'd say wait few months until after expansion to start making claims it failed.

While I can't go toooo long without deciding if I want to keep going, I been in this game for a minute and when I take a recommendation I know there's no guarantee I'll like it! Thanks again.
