Banishers: Ghosts of New Eden | OT | North American Witcher

Considering adding this to my wishlist, does it have any sequel hooks?

I don't really recall any sequel hooks. Its a very self contained story.
Not saying there cant be a sequel, but it doesn't end on a cliffhanger or anything like that.

Not per say, but it has notes and references that link it to Vampyr. So it's set in the same universe.

There may be a future game that combines both games or bridges the gap.

Aha cool.

Added to the Steam wishlist. :)

It really is an fantastic under-rated gem. This not getting more praise, marketing etc is a really saddening thing.
From what I've seen it's the exact thing most people are asking for in most threads (decent quality new singleplayer IP with strong storytelling) and yet no one went for it.

I played the demo they released a while ago, but it cut off just when things started getting interesting. It's in my wishlist, but I'm waiting for a good discount as I'm not quite sure.

So somehow I missed this when it came out. Seems interesting and I did enjoy Vampyr. But digging into it a little bit, some have accused this game of being woke. Yeah, I know. Woke. It means so many things to so many people and I am even sick of writing it.

So what did these people say about the game specifically? The main female lead is your modern strong black female. Apparently she runs the duo and the white guy just does what she asks. Supposedly lots of girl boss BS and men are idiots. Basically full of the modern message for modern audiences. Stuff that I am pretty sick of.

So for those of you who do not like modern messaging in games, how bad is it in this game?

On a side note, I feel like we need to come up with a woke scale or something, so we can give a woke rating on games.

This is a tough one. Let me first say that I loved the game. I also didn't think there was too much 'woke' pandering in this one, and I hate woke shit as much as the next guy.
That said, the points that you mentioned are there, in the sense that the black female is kinda the leader of the duo. There are also couple of quests which are about female suffering etc. But at the same time it doesn't feel too forced since it kinda fits the era the game is set in. And also the rest of the game is so well crafted that you can kinda push through couple of these things.

So relatively speaking, if we look at most modern games or specifically Don't Nod games, this game has much less woke shit and is a better game than most of those.

Started playing the game.

Combat is serviceable but clearly not gonna be one of the game's highlights. The investigation mechanics look excellent though, and the feeling of doing a ritual is surprisingly great.

The story and setting look really good though. The graphics are also much nicer than I thought.

Combat hopefully gets better for you as you progress. Combo'ing hand to hand with the rifle shots eventually can feel really really good. Always remember to keep upgrading your shit!

I don't really put this in the woke bin of games. What it does with race it does tastefully and normal and quite beautifully imo. Red and Antea could just be the best interracial game couple of all time (we'll see with GTA6 but this game did it first) because color of skin never comes into it and their connection and intimacy is so strong and well realized.

If I recall correctly there were one or two cases involving possibly gay or gay couples and again, it was more cooked than anything I've seen in recent years or now.

Nothing ever feels force fed, which is a testament to the writing. The voice acting just brings it to the next level.

So I grabbed this on sale. It is woke, but not horribly so. At least not yet. The gameplay is unique, as you play Red who's girlfriend/wife is a ghost who gives you abilities. She does seem to be the main character in a way, since Red relies on her heavily. Picking a black women in the time period and location gives the developers the opportunity to preach to you how bad blacks had it and also a few quips on colonialism. The game even gives you a warning before playing it. I am about 4 hours in and most women are awesome or victims while men are idiots and awful. Red, a beta male, is the best guy so far. The combat isn't that great. The story is interesting, but the world and characters are not carrying it that well. Vampyr was so much better. I am early in the game and it could get better. But so far the game is walking a fine line between being enjoyable and annoyingly cringe with all the woke writing. I think the only reason some are not calling it woke is because woke means different things to different people. To me it is definitely woke. But also interesting enough to keep me playing for now.

Sad that they thought they needed to add this to the game. The first sign of things to come.

Ha, calling this game The Witcher. Come on man. Here is my Steam review below. In the end, I was more annoyed by the game and just glad to finish it. It could have been so much better with minor tweaks and a mute button for Antea.

I really enjoyed Vampyr and reading about this game I was hoping I would enjoy it as well. Vampyr is the tighter and more enjoyable of the two games. This game drags and many cheap tricks are used to waste your time and keep you playing it well beyond the game's ability to captivate your interest.

Pros:
- The idea behind the game is great. A ghost of your lover stays at your side to help you and enhance combat.
- The setting is cool. Exploring early America in the late 1600s.
- Red is a great character.
- Combat is pretty fun and leveling up has meaningful benefits.
- Exploring the side missions where you solve hauntings is interesting and sending off ghosts is pretty cool.

Cons:
- Where Red is great, Antea can be insufferable. Red is always kind to her, but she can be very condescending and critical to Red. She blames him for her death. You play as Red, yet she is front and center.
- The game is loading with "the message". Woman are strong, mean are weak, colonialism is bad, and a lesbian in every camp. There are two sisters. One is a lesbian and the other is so badass, she should be the main character. She is the most masculine character in the whole game. She even has a badass name. Thickskin.
- There are a ton of side tasks and puzzles that are way too frequent and cut and paste. One of the most annoying puzzles that they use way too often are these vine puzzles. At first they were fun, but they stopped being from 50 times later and they are later needed to proceed with the main mission.
- Although it was interesting to send off ghosts, the insane amount of ghosts gets to be a bit much. The game takes place at several small camps and pretty much every person is haunted. Half the camp dies and haunts the remaining half.
- In the end, you have so many useless items in your inventory, I have no idea what the purpose of them are. Linen, leather, etc. You use very little for crafting and they are worth practically nothing when you sell them. Yet you end up with hundreds of each item, because the game world is littered with useless crap everywhere. You will go through some trouble to get to an area only to find these useless items. How much of my time was spent chasing after linen and leather? A lot.
- The world is broken up into smaller areas with these cheap tricks like crevices, ledges, crawl spaces, and climbing walls. How the settlers got around is beyond me because there are no connected roads or paths. Every area is laid out like a maze to simply make moving around more tedious and time consuming. It really got annoying after about 20 hours of it, with 20 more hours to go. I see no reason why the game could not have been more open world and easier to get around. Fast travel locations were mostly frequent enough, but you should have been able to quick travel from anywhere to those points and not need to go to those points to only travel to other points.

Overall, the bad, cringe, and annoying outweighed the good. I was drawn to the game and did enjoy the ending, but it was also a chore half the time and there are just too many things that could have been better. I doubt I will buy any other games from the developer since they are obsessed with preaching the message and I just want to enjoy a game without being preached to.
