A new report claims that Bluepoint Games' mystery PlayStation exclusive is a new IP. The PlayStation Studio has kept its project tightly under wraps, and has thus far only confirmed that it's working on something "original." But whatever that original project is, it's unlikely to be based on an existing franchise.

The latest report comes to us from journalist and insider Jeff Grubb, who recently mentioned in an episode of Game Mess Mornings that Bluepoint is working on a new IP. Bluepoint doesn't have any history of creating an original IP with the exception of PS3's Blast Factor that released in 2006.

Sony is firing on all cylinders after the fantastic 2024 lineup!

Edit: clarifying 2024 lineup:

Helldivers
Stellar Blade
Silent Hill 2
Wukong
FF7 Remake
Rise of Ronin

I'm sure I missed some..

Time to prove themselves.

Here's hoping it's a single-player game.

Nice. They already said that they are working on "original" content, nice to see that it is a new ip. Looking forward to it, they have some talented folks over there

Nice. There were impressive with Demon soul remake. I hope it is not another live service or GAAS. And hopefully it is not twisted woke agenda infested game.

Honestly, I don't have high hopes. What little creative input they had on the Demon's Souls Remake was mostly to the games detriment, in regards to face animations, music and so on. Like you'd think you couldn't screw this up, so I'm not sure how well they'll do with this. Of course I'd love it if they'd turn out something great, we'll see.

Well, its been 4 years. They used to make remakes in 2-2.5 years and now its been 4 years and they have yet to show a single screenshot from their next game. Either they are incompetent and cant make new games, or just really fucking slow at getting shit done.

I think these devs chasing perfection taking 6 fucking years to make new games are signing their own death warrant. It's taking too way too long to make a fucking video game. Get shit done in 2-3 years max. Keep the budgets reasonable and you wont be shut down if the game underperforms.

People will blame evil Sony if they shut down Bluepoint but lets start fucking holding devs accountable for churning through Publisher money for more than half of a decade to make one game. They need better planning, and a more cohesive vision from the directors at the top who can take a project from pre-production to completion in under 3 years. if fucking nolan can make a movie everything three years while writing his own shit, shooting everything on location and using no CG then a bunch of video game studios should be able to create a game in 3 years.

I'm not sure how I feel about this. Wasn't their last game they actually developed that lame PSN twin-stick shooter on PS3, and all their projects since were either remasters, remakes, or ports?

With Sony going back to its single player roots, expect too see more single player games especially from Bluepoint, hopefully not a live service.

The leaked art showed a new IP

Looks cool
If you are talking about that image in a cave like area with a waterfall and two characters in an egypt like setting... I don't think that's anything to do with it, that was on their recruitment page, I think its just artwork someone used as part of their portfolio that BP asked if they could use (most likely a current employee)

edit: BluePoint have some amazing tech as seen in Demons Souls, not sure why some here are trying to discredit them.

Demons remake is 3 years old now...

There's been a bit of back and forth based on language and speculation. Phrases like "original content" made people question if it's a new IP of their own, helping another studio on a new game like a sequel, or if they were just doing a remake with new content. It's been odd. This comes from Jeff Grubb. He claims it's a new IP. But, of course, there are still questions.

They don't have the team needed to be the lead team of a AAA game, they are a support team. As an example they don't have any game director or creative director, and a too small game design team. They have a team needed to make support on new games or remakes.

But yes, it's likely that they may be working on a new IP leaded by someone else as could be SSM, ND, Bend or Haven.

We later saw that 'original content' meant that instead of making remakes they were making support job in a new game: GoWR. According to the game credits and their LinkedIn, after Demon's Souls their entire team worked on GoWR. They didn't have enough people free to work in other game, and less to lead their own game.

After shipping GoWR (they didn't work in Valhalla), according to Sony they continue being a support/parter team. According to them working in a new team, their studio boss said that with Demon's Souls they left the remasters and remakes behind to work in new games instead (but as we see, in a support role).

Sony isn't back to anything because the majority of their games under development always have been single player focused games. Bluepoint is a support team, they don't make their own games. But their current project pretty likely might be a SSM/ND/Insomniac/Bend game, which means that pretty likely will be a single player game, yes.

I hope we see something soon, i don't agree with slimy and i'm ok if devs take 5+ years to make big games, but after 4 years i need to see a 10 min vertical slice to get hyped a bit, you need to have something to show.

Yeah. So which studio are they helping make a new IP with?

People keep saying that, but Bluepoint themselves have described their current state as "We have taken the next step in our growth, from our history of delivering the highest quality remasters and remakes in the industry to developing original content."

Are we implying that they've taken the leap to developing original content without the necessary people in place? That seems like an incredibly stupid thing to do and Bluepoint does not strike me as a stupid group.

They could of made 2 remakes since Demons Souls by now…. Took them 2.5 years to make Demons Souls and SOTC

Yes, they said that when they had the entire Bluepoint team working on GoWR in a support role. Which is developing original content because GoWR was a new game, and not a remaster/remake.

They are working on original content, but in a support role.

AAA games are normally developed by over a dozen teams: one of the is the lead (SSM in case of GoWR) and the other ones are internal or external support teams (Bluepoint was one of them in GoWR).

Bluepoint has mostly artists, and only a few producers, a few designers and a few coders. A team like that is "the necessary people in place" for being a support team or to make remakes/remasters. But not to lead their own AAA game, and even less a new AAA IP. To do that they'd need to also have a way bigger design team, a game director, a creative director, a stronger coding team etc. that they don't have.

So they are working on original content, and maybe it's a new IP, but in a support role: the lead team of that game must be somebody else that has the studio structure and team required to lead their own games (SSM, ND, Insomniac, Bend, Housemarque etc).

Bluepoint said that they did stop working on remakes/remasters, and that after Demon's Souls were going to work on new games/original content instead. But never said they were going to work on these new games/original content as the lead dev studio. Sony instead recently said they are a support/partner team, which is what we saw in the game credits of GoWR.

4. PS5 came out in November 2020.

Imagine spending 4 years on something and not having a single screenshot to show for it. Literally just shut the studio down. These publishers are cutting these devs too much slack.

Sony's CEO was talking about changing how they run their gaming business. Id say implement these few rules to ensure better production from your studios:
- 1 year in. Fire the director if he's unable to produce a vertical slice ready for an E3 showing after 1 year of development.
- 2 years in. Fire the studio head if he's unable to provide a release date after 2 years of dev time.
- 3 years in. Shut the studio down if they are unable to produce a single screenshot, trailer, or fucking name of the game that you can announce. If they cant get it done in 3 years, no point waiting for the 4th.
- 4 years. Fire the head of your worldwide studios and your gaming CEO. This is sheer incompetence letting devs take this long. You are not rockstar who make games that sell 200 million copies. You dont get 7 years.
