Elden Ring has sold 28.6 million copies as of end of September 2024

What a juggernaut of a game. And a new IP at that.

Shipped, not sold.
English press release says sold.

Also, they updated Elden Ring Sales figures, the game is now sold 28.6 million.

I guess it is technically a new IP, but they might as well have called it Dark Souls 4.
Eh, Nintendo makes a ton of different platformers and none sell as well as Mario.

And this has sold better than any Dark Souls game, so frankly being a new IP seem to have boosted its appeal. It might not have sold anywhere near these levels if it was labeled "Dark Souls 4".

I think it's interesting that elden ring has sold so much more than their other games. I would argue sekiro has better moment to moment gameplay but that didn't translate to mega sales. Only major difference is the big open world, but usually people say on boards that open world games are saturated and boring.

Open world and improvements to magic system made the game's difficulty system more adjustable, u can literally make game as difficult as u like it to be, personally i love all souls games except sekiro(too difficult for me, rip=/ ), but i can totally see the appeal of players new to souls genre for elden ring and not other games.
They can skip harder bosses or go explore in totally different direction and only come back to that one particular hard one 20hours later with much stronger character :)

Open world games are far and away the best selling games and many have seen renewed or increased success after moving to that format.

GTA
AC
TES
Far Cry
Horizon
GOT

And you got franchises like Zelda, Spider-Man, and Souls that experienced unprecedented levels of success once they moved to open worlds.

Safe to say, people on message boards don't represent the real world, but you already knew that.

I am going to give this topic one of those "praise the sun" type likes because even though I am not gud enough for them, I still like that they are successful over things like Concord, Dustborn, and anything else like that. I hope this company and their games continue to succeed and eventually even overshadow Naughty Dog as a company. I may not be Journo level of bad, but I really get far too easily stressed whenever I try to play these games.

One aspect that matters a lot is the accessibility. Elden Ring being the open world design, there are numerous way for players to overpower themselves and steamroll many contents.

While Sekiro places a much greater challenge on ones' pure skills. I new a few folks irl that turned down Sekiro because of its difficulty. Sad story, because Sekiro indeed has the best moment to moment gameplay.

I liked Elden Ring a lot but yea for me Sekiro was MUCH better game but big reason Sekiro is sold less because it's SP only game and its much more hardcore action game which may not have mass appeal.

As of September so it might have reached 30 million or near it by now 🤔

Well deserved one of my favorite games of all time 🙏

I have no idea why Elden Ring caught fire the way it did and I doubt From or Namco know why either. According to Reddit posts Bandai Namco forecast 4 million sales.

The GOAT. Such and incredible game and well deserved.

Will sell comfortably over 30 million copies before Switch 2 releases and 10 million and more on that console alone.

So I beat:

Demon's Souls x2
Dark Souls I x3
Dark Souls II x1
Bloodborne x9 or even 10 or something
Dark Souls III x3
Sekiro x1
Elden Ring x0 still

I don't know what's holding me back. Maybe because it's open world?

(It's Bloodborne 2 stealth begging)

Ok. That's nuts. Elden Ring is absolutely a Souls game. It's inconceivable to me that anyone who loves the other games wouldn't play it!

Haha, pretty much me, although I played less Bloodborne (NG+5) and more Sekiro (NG+3).

What put me off was the combat, it was from Sekiro back to Souls dodge spam format I just couldn't keep engaged.

I plan to finish Elden Ring one day tho.

Sony are the biggest fucking idiots on the planet.

I couldn't agree more. I am a bit saddened it was Sony that is going to get them, especially after everything I've seen of them in the last 8 years.
However, nothing of this matters in the grand scheme of things. Has no negative or positive effect on me. So, Fuck it. 😎
