Astro Bot has sold 1.5 million copies

They didn't give him the boot after he wasted an obvious failure with half a billion dollar so there is basically no hope. We will continue to see a half assed Sony 1p under him.
And that is easily covered by Helldivers 2 revenue.

But since they're running a business, Firewalk got closed.

No idea why people like you seem to be completely stuck on Concord and act like it's all Sony had for this entire gen. Or for this year, even.

Helldivers 2 wasn't approved under his leadership, and Concord was essentially his passion project. He was so impressed with it that he brought it fully in-house. This highlights significant incompetence and calls for accountability in his leadership. It's frustrating that we're experiencing such a drought in quality releases due to mismanagement by both Jim and Hulst.

Get over yourself.

Performance, animations, graphics and core gameplay of Concord were solid and that's likely what Playstation appreciated about Firewalk. The studio consisted of devs that worked on games like Destiny and COD and it shows.

And nobody had expected the game to do as terrible as it did.

These things can happen in any kind of business. And that's why Firewalk ot closed and all buyers got refunded.

The only frustrating thing for people like you must be that Astro Bot 'only' sold 1.5M copies, while a large part of Gaf acted like Astro Bot somehow 'saved' Sony from whatever doom it was after Concord.

Edit:

Anyway, instead of people embracing a more diverse and expansive portfolio from Playstation, they'd rather cry about missing out on some imaginary sp games that never existed.

It's still more a 400m dollar project selling 25k copies.

It took years for other platformers like it takes 2 to reach the 20m numbers. Something between 5 and 10m is totally realistic since its still early days und you probably could make 10 astro bots of the budget of one concord.

And no the whole art style, design, DEI garbage and generic gameplay was known. Hulst didn't care and wasted money big time. He should have wen out the door with Firewalk 💯

And that's why it got shut down.

Meanwhile, Helldivers 2 sold 12+M copies easily, which should be around $480M at production cost of $50M-100M. Add revenue from Warbonds and at worst they broke even.
Helldivers 2 is a live service game, so it's bound to generate more revenue.

If looking at it like that.

They could probably make 10 astro bots, but those are exactly the imaginary hypothetical games I was talking about.
They only exist in your head. You're the one who makes you feel let down, not Hulst, nor Ryan.

And nobody expected this result, that includes them.

So, again, they refunded everybody, aborted the game and shut down the studio.

Your hateboner is starting to become pathetic, especially over a game like Concord.

Yes it's off topic at this point. Let's go back to the fact that you defend shitty gaas decisions while downplaying sales of astro bot ;).

I'm not downplaying anything. I said sales are decent for what Astro Bot is.
Also not defending Concord at all. I never actually cared about it.

Fact is, this shows why AAA and AA titles alone aren't the answer to the exponential costs for Playstation.

Games like Astro Bot are rare in today's Sony lineup, and if they focused more on titles like that, we wouldn't be facing this content drought. Many games in the live-service category were canceled, leaving us with few AA and AAA titles under the current leadership. Most of the high-quality projects we did get were actually greenlit by Yoshida and his team.

No new 1p game until March and I doubt we will see alot more non gaas games in the next FY if they even come out. Really a shitty generation for Sony as far as own made content goes. Astro Bot is an outlier and Hulst won't learn a lesson from it. Even the pro console is much worse than last generation in comparison. Like I said current Sony is basically not better than EA or Activision.

What content drought? Playstation released enough games this year and then there is the 3rd party stuff.

Their main studios are hard at work and would be in exactly the same situation under any other head at Playstation studios, because their major titles take longer. This is known.
Other smaller studios got closed because those games didn't sell well.

And many gaas titles, or some? Because afaik most are still in production.

Those games take time.

And bolded is entirely up to you. They've released enough, so that's a you thing.
I'm content with what they released so far.

Yea we know at least of life five games which got cancelled. Last of us, London studio gaas game, The CoD dude gaas game, insomniacs gaas games and concord 🤣🤣. And that's just the games of the top of my head.

To each their own. I think their output, subscription and the new hardware shows greed and nothing more. It's a far cry of the previous generations.

So, basically, 5 out of 12 and we don't even know if the Insomniac gaas titles were part of said 12.

But yeah, to each their own.

I think you are wasting your time. It's like talking to a wall with that poster when it comes to anything regarding PlayStation.

It's sad that wanting unique games is not a goal for more people
I welcome unique games as well. The flaw in your logic is the insinuation that Gaas is going to replace those.

Nope, never said anything like that. Already had this discussion with you, so I see no point in repeating it.
That's fine. I don't even recognize your username.

Going by the last few years all we hear is pc ports, gaas and save sequels. Don't get me wrong I liked some of those but its a far cry from other generations.

The other titles are still in development.

Sony has been clear that they will talk about games closer to release, after people were flaming them throughout the entire PS4 gen because of announcing games too early.

I'd love more games as well, but it's not like there is nothing to play at all.
All I'm saying is that a lot of the letdown is self-imposed.

That's quite low, yes 2 months blabla, but still very low. Sony games aren't Nintendo games, they won't keep make good sales after 6 months or 1 year. 65M consoles sold and 1.5M for this game ? Yeah, not good.

PS : I bought the game on day one.

Like someone said earlier.

Sony games do continue to sell well throughout its lifetime.

Unlike Nintendo they don't keep their full price.

All the Sony fans here are as dense as bricks, living in their own deluded bubble of backing each other up with likes and lies. They have a warped view on history and the present, I mean the PS5 is selling worse than the PS4 but they left that out of the recent thread title for some reason and filled it with posts about success.

In this thread they are claiming that the third game in a series is a "new ip" and can't be compared to Mario despite the original Super Mario Bros selling 40 mil as a new ip. I've not even been here long and I'm fed up with them but the mods clearly like these lame character posters so the rest of us get to see what dumb hypocritical shit they'll spew day after day.

And Sonic X Shadow Generations sold 1 million in a day. Granted it's multiplat but still. I hope Astro Bot will have some long legs here, it deserved at least ten times this.

Lots of projecting and conflating of people here.

Besides, how many times did a new generation launch during a pandemic?

I was one of those sales. Got it for my youngest kid but strangely he finds it boring and instead just replays Playroom over and over 🤷‍♂️

Yeah I know but I mean, I highly doubt it'll triple the sales. Crash 4 sold 5.5M and it was considered as a failure. So I don't think that a 1st party IP on the best selling console, with 65M sales, consider that 1.5M is good. I regret it, but it is my opinion. :(

Dependent on budget and expectations.

Astro Bot will be a huge success if it sells 5.5m.

This has to do with brand management mostly, both Astro specifically, but also PlayStation as whole. Fanboys can stop with the "its a new IP!!" BS. Astro is known since 2013... Its all on Sony. The game didnt have a big budget, neither for the production nor for the marketing. PlayStation is a place for shooters and "cinematic experiences" for years.
The game itself is very nice and reflects what Sont does best - copying ideas from others, then blending and retelling them.

The problem with Astro is once you pull it out of VR it becomes less special, rescue mission was incredible becausue you were inside Astros world with him having the entire thing surround you was like nothing else not even on a Nintendo system but once you go to a plain old flatscreen game it becomes just another platformer. I see why sony didn't release it as a PSVR2 title because the problem is while it would make the game incredible it would sell like shit because the adoption rate for PSVR2 is terrible.

Going back to the topic i think it's 90% the west supporting this game as in japan it sold like shit, it lasted just a few weeks in the top 20 charts not even getting to first then it literally vanished without a trace and hasn't been seen since not a good look for a sony first party release. Shame really as if the PS5 had more games of this type i'd have been more inclined to jump aboard as thats what pulled me into getting a ps4 with VR.

If you wanna discuss copying, blending, and retelling, the place is any BOTW thread.

Astrobot VR is an example of innovation and this game is influenced by that. The "Sony copy" trope is seriously worn out.

Seems a bit low to me, I loved the title even if it was a little short.

As lots of others have stated, if support for these titles is not there then we will be fed slop and we will like it.

Loved Astro Bot

Hope it has great legs because it does deserve them.

So far it seems like a good number for it's budget, but I want MOAR !!!

It is my game of the year. I hope it sells well with a very long shelf life. The game is a Joy!

In my opinion the game is fantastic and it sold well but I just hope Sony see it that way as well.

If Sony dose anything idiotic like shutting down ASOBI Team over not doing GOW numbers then I'm fucking done with Sony and they can just fuck off.
Don't worry. Not every game that doesn't get (positively) acknoledged by Sony in its IR meetings is seen as a failure, but every single one that does is absolutely a hit in its eyes.
Sony is not Square Enix, Media Molecule is still around after over a decade without a single hit thanks to the strong critical reception of its games, Team Asobi is really more than safe.

No more waiting is needed. It's already down on sales lists and talk is slowing down. There are 60m PS5 owners, are there really no platformer fans among the fanbase anymore?
This is IT. This is THE platformer. THE game for any Playstation fan. A literal system seller. And the only Sony first party studio game this year besides pulled Concord and the Horizon remaster. It rated high and has had a ton of positive word of mouth and it'll be nominated and likely win the GOTY award at TGA.
It should've sold more. What exactly are people waiting for here? What are people playing??
Hardcore PlayStation fans are a small portion of the market, it seems short-sighted to make conclusions about sales for a game that will have far more reach in the holiday season when parents are actually shopping for their children.
This has to do with brand management mostly, both Astro specifically, but also PlayStation as whole. Fanboys can stop with the "its a new IP!!" BS. Astro is known since 2013...
What a reach. First of all, Astro Bot wasn't even in the first The Playroom title, and that game couldn't be any more different from the current platformer series that started in 2018 in... PlayStation VR (with an entry that also managed to sell 1M copies in a year, proving that the appeal was there).
It's technically not a new IP, but it may as well be considering that Astro Bot 2024 is the first retail game in the franchise that doesn't require an expensive peripheral.

What I don't get is why everyone is worried about sales when Sony literally isn't. I would understand if Sony remained silent after a while and all, but they're not!

It is in no way just for hardcore Playstation fans and kids. It's for everyone. And it's awesome. No matter how you look at it 2,5% of the Playstation userbase is not enough.

Umm... about that 37%... how many first party games have Sony published in the past 2 years? I don't think I've purchased a first party title in that timeframe other than Astro Bot...

Top Bottom
