While Horizon wouldn't be my first choice for a setting I would love to see a new, successful MMO come out and shake things up. The most popular ones these days were all released more than a decade ago. Literally 2 decades for WoW.

Hopefully whatever Riot's working on eventually turns into... something.

Sorry, but you can't determine it being any sort of waste until it actually releases, and using a completely unrelated game (in both genres and development realities) is a pretty weak argument. It has as much weight as implying that it's an inherently good idea just because Helldivers 2 was successful; just let the products speak for themselves.

I do actually, by using other rejects projects as base. Otherwise you could say that to basically any cancelled project, including not limited to LoU multiplayer. And a big but here, I'm not saying that garantees this game will be a failure though. What I do believe is that Horizon does not have what it takes to be a contender, Helldivers has a good appeal(strong resemblance and inspiration to Startroppers). Horizon doesn't and the only reason I can think this thing being a thing despite alot cancelling its because of Hermen.

Me and my son actually play it in coop a lot. Not because we're huge fans, but because there a very few games you can play with your 5yo boy on a single screen. Especially with this level of polish.

Besides being profitable, these games add an intangible brand value. The brand is perceived as "good". Metroid is the absolute paradigm of it, the conversation around it is so much bigger than its actual sales.

The alternative to relatively niche games can't be a wild bet that will most likely turn out in failure and layoffs.

Something around that yeah.
Unless spending 200m or above in projects that "might" be sucessfull(being very generous here since we are talking about GaaS, a very high risk market) seems like a good idea to you.
Stellar and Astrobot might not be the "best sellers", but they take advantage of the word of mouth marketing and will gain more revenue overtime when the price seems more attractive.
GaaS on the other hand is a gamble. Unless someone is willing to put great effort to catch the custumers and retain them, you will not see returns, only more money being burnt. Dunno how many times it has being said, but its not an easy task to hit the market like Marvel Rivals. They think its is, but its not. Thats why we had Concord.
Also Helldivers has nothing to do with cancelations. Already stated that Helldivers have a good appeal, the resemblance and inspiration of Starshiptroopers, which is awesome. But Horizon? Whats their appeal?

I know why people use Concord and what the effect of it's disaster is.

But games like Helldivers are what they're after.

And games like Marvel Rivals and PoE2 show that live-service games can be succesful.

There is no right or wrong for either live-service or traditional singleplayer.

Basing your entire point in using rejected or canceled projects makes zero sense when none of that applies to the Horizon MMO. What is your point of reference to determine it being a waste of money and development time, exactly? It all comes down to your personal belief in that it will flop because reasons.
Again, predicting how this game will fare by looking at previous efforts -which includes a hit (Helldivers 2) and a flop (Concord)- that are completely unrelated in terms of genre, gameplay, etc. is just dumb.
BTW, I think Horizon has a world with good potential in the GAAS sphere. Fighting dino robos is definitely appealing.

Co-op modes in light-hearted platformers/action games can be very overlooked and should be made more often, IMO. If you haven't already, I suggest giving Knack 2 a go for some co-op, I found it to be pretty decently fun.
