Onimusha 2 Samurai's Destiny Remastered Announced

This announcement gave me the push I needed to finally play the first game. I bought the remaster years ago at a sale but never got around to it, I've been hearing it's kinda meh. I'm really enjoying myself so far. It's basic for sure, but there's a RE1 charm to it that I can't describe. The remaster itself is really, really basic, but I do appreciate the update in the analog stick controls which makes combat a breeze instead of a slog.

I did the same. I had the trilogy on PS2 but somehow never played part 2 very far. I totally liked 3, which one of my fave PS2 games full stop. I started 1 a short while ago, and I think they did a good job, game looks sharp and plays well. The RE angles... I love them. It adds some mystery and some cool camera angles. But sometimes you can't see your enemies, but this was normal back then. I remembered the Issen counter, which still feels kind of cool. So I got to to this floor puzzle, let me see... Game Over. wtf. I don't remember this part while I beat the game twice or so. Its quite a short game.

The only problem with the remaster is that the soundtrack is different. They had to replace it due to a legal controversy with the original composer. The new one is not bad though, just missing some iconic themes.

The original soundtrack was fantastic. What little I've heard the new one doesn't sound up to that level.

I didn't, it's nothing like the first 3 games.
Not to mention it was very boring and I had no desire to finish it. Overstays it's welcome and the second disc should be a giveaway…also it's final fantasy anime art style is trash.

It'd be nice to have the Genma content as an option, though Genma also really mucks with the difficulty balance and some other aspects of the mechanics that makes it a different, but not necessarily better game. I held on to both versions, personally.

The point is, I don't think it's a huge loss for those just coming in fresh to Remastered.
 
I beat 1 just now. In exactly 5 hours including Dark Realm and the Bishamon sword that trivializes the final boss.

Its a flawed gem. I didn't remember the open ending and I thought it had some more bosses and scenes. But the final area is basically one corridor with a few boss fights. Game is extremely short, I think without dicking around and trying these gauntlets you can easily beat it below 3 hours.

But I like the risk/reward here. If you play good, ie abuse Issen, you get far more upgrade points and your health is returned. This is why I ended up using the green weapon the most. Because it has AoE on Issen. I did a small bit of NG+ in Panda suit, exclusively fished for Issen and both parts of my weapon were level 2 before the swine boss.

Yeah so I hope 3 comes a bit sooner after 2, and the new game still has these mechanics. Perhaps even the static camera? Probably not but I noticed I really like it.

it's crazy to me that none of the original assets survived :/

in stark contrast to the Soul Reaver remaster where they were able to re-render the prerendered cutscenes in full 4K with the original assets and everything.

imagine how great these remasters could look if Capcom kept all the assets for their prerendered backgrounds saved somewhere.
because that would not only mean clean high def renders would be possible, but also the possibility of going in and adding detail where there was none before,
like replacing textures with higher detail ones, or even adding PBR materials to the scenes before rendering out the backgrounds.
 
Why should I buy this "Remaster" if I can play it anytime on my PS2? lol no thanks m8! you wanna destroy the OG Music like you did with the first one huh?

If you got it on PC you need to mod in the original soundtrack, it's incredible and makes up 50% of the experience.

Yeah the first game is quite basic. Easy puzzles, a bit of combat and overall a very short experience. Still fun to play, the exploration is nice and the prerendered backgrounds look great.

I wonder how the other games are in comparison to the first one. Will probably play 2 later this year.

Are you talking about the remaster? Because I don't see why it would be more of an issue than when the game initially released (Yusaku Matsusa was already dead by more than 10 years). I suppose whoever possessed the rights at that time still does ...

Yes the reason the remaster never came out straight after the first. Capcom simply didn't want to pay it.

Unfortunately though a lot of these PS1/PS2 era games got a remaster during a pre AI-upscaling era and so we're stucked with ugly blurry backgrounds in many fantastic games like classic FF7/8/9 and the same Capcom games (Onimusha Warlords, the RE games).
It's unlikely that these remasters will be updated taking advantage of the new technology anytime soon.

Looks fantastic. I was enthralled by the rain impact and flowing water effects back in the day (I assume it was video looped over the in-game environment). I hope the upscaling doesn't negatively impact it.

Think I'm gonna pass on this one after all. Just read my review of the original PS2 version and was reminded of the rage inducing final boss fight. Don't think I'm gonna do this to myself again...
 
Really hope we can choose JP language and subs, even though the English voices are mostly hilarious as fk. Looking at you oni lady and gogandantess

Looks a lot better than I expected. It will look even better when it's run in the original 4:3 aspect ratio and not zoomed in.

As far as I know there shouldn't be any issues with the soundtrack of 2 as it doesn't use the same controversial composer.
