Xbox unveils Muse, an AI for gameplay ideas.

Today, the journal Nature(opens in new tab) is publishing our latest research, which introduces the first World and Human Action Model (WHAM). The WHAM, which we've named "Muse," is a generative AI model of a video game that can generate game visuals, controller actions, or both.

I'll try and keep the downvote counter going on YouTube while this thread is active.

Phil Spencer could easily be handled by AI. Not even good AI. I don't see these upper managers thinking the best, most efficient job replacement using AI would be number pushers like them. And it would have companies millions.

FFS Xbox, just get good studio management and testers that are actually critical. And for god's sake boot Phil, Matt and Aaron already.

I swear they try everything but what is actually proven to work.

I think AI will be a positive thing for games for the most part, but if you have to use them for gameplay ideas? really?
I was thinking you could use them for some art or characters and just tweak what it spits out instead of starting from scratch. Not relying on it for gameplay ideas.

i'm trying to remember the last time there was a nice Xbox headline and i can't seem to remember. Today won't be that day as well.

They really think this was something good to show? It looks soulless as fuck.

This is it... we've finally reached rock bottom.

Devs are so creatively bankrupt now that we've had to create AI to help them out.
I really don't think blaming devs is the best. Publishers rubbing their hands and looking at how to make cheap games and make more money? Sure...but i don't think artists look at this and think "this is amazing".

Two more games to be released before the end of Xbox.
Technically 3 if you count Doom (I should count it but for some reason I don't think of it as an xbox game)
Fable and Perfect Dark then Xbox dies.

I was just trying to make a dark joke over the fact that the industry is definitely less creative than before but I agree with you in the sense that I blame the publishers and their trend chasing for this.

Seriously, you could pay me $100k a year and I could slam out game ideas all day long.

lol, MS were afraid getting ratio'd by their fans, to the point that they unlisted the video from their channel, hence the very low engagements. 😂

You could simply just hire people that played those old games and can make them like that but better.

I couldn't give a shit about AI involvement, but if it turns into a reliable way to preserve games, it lessens the sting of getting AI involved in gaming. 🤷‍♂️

AI is a toolset. I find no issue with trying to utilize deep learning to identify new approaches to game design.

The obvious approaches - first-person, third-person, fixed camera, top-down, 2d-side scrolling, etc. - were all naturally occurring. But would I like a game where my perspective is stapled to an enemy character's POV but I still control the avatar of the main character? I don't have a clue, so let deep learning test it and see what it can discern.

The greatest mystery in game design is accepting player feedback but identifying the things they don't realize they want.

Why they need AI? Just take a successful IP, make all the characters woke and call it a sequel. They're really good at it.

This is Microsoft. They don't care at all about game preservation. How do we know? Look at their physical media for current games. Halo Infinite was a coaster.

This is Phil putting on the Hexen shirt and claiming he can't wait to get the classics back when they wasted money on Activision.

Why would we need AI to preserve old games. I'm not even sure what they are to mean by that. In what way would AI be preserving old games?

This is what they say, finding a solution to how it's done is up to them now.

It genuinely blows me away that Phil Spencer does constant video and podcast appearances representing a trillion dollar company and they will not give him a microphone.

Practically everyone who spends any time presenting online has a microphone so they don't have to use their laptop mic. Ridiculous.

that would be pretty simple to program without any use of ai. it would be on the developers to find a way to actually make it fun, in dialogue with real playtesters.

Christ... can these idiots do anything useful?

Danny says, from his mom's bedroom to the company with a worldwide top 5 evaluation.

Seriously though, AI is going to be incredible in helping reduce dev costs and will save this industry by keeping it affordable. I get the angst, but a lot of the shit y'all are knee-jerking is unfounded bullshit.

I'm not against any automated process that improves old games. We already use AI to upscale games in real time.

It's an extremely soulless way of actually making a new game though of course.

Oh dear, Phil aged really really bad. He is only 57?

No more uncle phil, he is Grandpa Phil, is he suffering from some illness
