Suikoden and JRP remasters, more please!

Bought Suikoden remaster?

I am just curious how many people bought the remaster of Suikoden 1 and 2?

This has been my favorite Jrpg series since playing the 2nd in 1998/99 (then playing the first the same year).
It is really sad that we haven't had new Suikoden game in 17 years! Almost 2 decades.

If this doesn't get the sales, I fear that this series will die, permanently. As old fans will be old and game companies don't seem to like to cater to anyone over 40 (which doesn't make sense, as we have the most money, we didn't stop playing games because we got older). What happens when its a minority who even remember the series, or other JRPGs from the golden age?

I am thrilled that this got the treatment that it did, but why was it delayed 2 whole years? August 30, 2023 was the original release date and we didn't get it until March 3rd 2025!!!!

If you haven't played any of these, and you like jrpgs, then give them a try. I loved these more than Final Fantasy, back in the day.

It would be great if more remasters like this got released, and maybe lower budget sequels in the same style.
I wouldn't mind pixel art or ps1/ps2 era graphics and a cheaper price tag.

What are some games you would want to have the same remaster treatment?

For me i would love to see Parasite Eve 1 and 2 remaster, Vandal Hearts, Mega Man legends and Vagrant story.

So far for rpgs(jrpgs and wrpgs) we got Suikoden 1/2, Diablo2 , Gothic 1-2, Grandia 1-2, Star ocean 1-2, Front mission 1-2, Tactics ogre, DQ 1-3, and all the Final fantasy games minus tactics.

I haven't bought the Suikoden remaster because it seems like a downgrade aside from select scenes. I feel like the art style was ruined in many instances.

Same with FFVI Pixel Remaster, it looks hideous. At least you can mod it on PC to fix the mess they made.

The problem is that these versions will be the ones to receive support/ports going forward. If the originals would be available, as is, for purchase on most platform, I wouldn't complain.

To end with something positive, I'm playing Tales of Graces f Remastered and it seems to be a solid remaster. But that's a 3D title so it's easier to remaster than a pixel art based title.

The Suikoden remaster looks bad and I sure hope they stop butchering those old titles with those shit "remasters".

Do it like Square did with Live A Live, or don't do anything.

There are only a few JRPG's I want remastered. Not the ones which are the usual JRPG trop-y nonsense with screetchy girls, underage kids saving the world (most with amnesia) and titles which are non-sensical.

I would prefer some of the unique ones like : Skies of Arcadia, Vagrant Story, Parasite Eve...among others.

Give me more stuff akin to Dragon Quest III and Star Ocean 2.
Also the new Romancing Saga 2 remake, which was excellent.

Yeah Skies of Arcadia was so unique and good. I don't remember shit about the story so I would absolutely play a remaster.

Xenogears is the obvious one for me.

I'm happy to see Trails in the Sky getting a remake: Hopefully they do the whole trilogy and then remake the Crossbell games as well.

I can't really complain whether the remasters look good or bad. I'm thankful they exist and I bought it not just for nostalgia, but in hopes we'll see a continuation in the series moving forward.

To say it's a downgrade though is a subjective opinion.

We are getting 2 of the top 5 in terms of badly needing a modern release in Suikoden and Lunar.

I would say that Skies of Arcadia, Lufia, and Breath of Fire are also needed.

I would also expect MML+Tron Bonne to come "soon" considering Capcom ported MMBN

I'm a huge fan of Suikoden but I never played the first two games until two years ago. I usually don't replay games so I'll wait on getting this game. I'll be getting the Switch Physical

Hell yes!!!

Anyone remember Illusion of Gaia? More of an action rpg on snes. Could be like the blaster master remakes.

Xenogears. It feels like that game is a fever dream at this point cause I haven't played it since release.

Theres the golden suns. Those are fondly remembered. And Radiant Historia

Suikoden actually looks good, to me, it could of been really bad. I used to have the ps1 disc's but sold them in 2001 for $5 a pop (still hitting myself over that), own them on ps3 and played them over against on psp. I agree they should of been released along with a bunch of other games on ps4/ps5 as they already had them done on ps3. The bright side is since they didnt they are on more than one platform. I wouldn't be able to play on the switch.

I guess if you want the old version you can always emulate on pc or steam deck. Although I prefer the sharp visual backgrounds and added sound effects. I would really love for suikoden 3 - 5 to come over, playing on ps2 isn't great with today's tvs.

Played the originals and loving the remaster. This game was so ahead of its time. Like the OP, these games are my jam.

Is that coming to switch? That's the one with Estelle and her staff? I played that on psp and never got to the sequels. Played the older legends of heroes on psp too, I liked them too. I never could get into the newer games when they went to a military school.

Bought it, will play it sometime this year. Currently on Baten Kaitos 1, the remaster is pretty good.
I never played that. Wasnt that a game cube exclusive? I seen it the seen its all subs. Grrr. Can you turn the voices off? A game with lots of text in a different language, can't do it. Yakuza was fine as it took place in Japan.

Xenogears is a must, if you don't wanna go back that far a ton of PS2 era JRPGs

Rogue Galaxy
Xenosaga( would never happen)
Shadow hearts and Shadow Hearts Covenant
Shin Megami Tensei: Digital Devil Saga one the best SMT series

They destroyed the art style. This is Langrisser all over again. With as long as this has been in development, would it have been that hard to just update or redraw the pixel art to fit modern displays?

The artwork and portraits, even the fuckin text box is completely stripped of character. Looks like RPG Maker shit. Suikoden is easily one of my favorite JRPG series and it deserved better.

Star Ocean 2 R and DQ3 are pretty great. Grandia and Suikoden aren't the best , but I still bought the physical copies (and Steam for Grandia).

Suikoden took so long and yet results were kind of meh, it's a bit surprising. Especially the new autosave system is annoying and no running speed acceleration on the map or in towns. Still worth having a copy though.

Back in Jan 2025 , i have already bought the game digitally using the playstation stars points with $30 and i only paid $20 in cash as the SRP in my country is just $50

i am glad the Suikoden 1 HD does not make my ps4 hard drive spin like having a disco party unlike Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii

getting old , i am glad some of the fonts are bigger in the remaster , just saying...

the old PS1 classics is still in my vita and psp , but i am lazy to get them out of the cupboard

Yes, it's coming to Switch. The Cold Steel series takes place in the military academy, but the Crossbell and the Daybreak games do not. So maybe you can check those out.

I will eventually get it. Never played a Suikoden and plan to do it one day (like so many others old titles/series...)

I am all for re-release of old JRPG or games in general that can be difficult to access (outside of emulation) nowaday.

Xenogears and Parasitive Eve 1 europe release please... We got Chrono Cross in recent years, so I hope these 2 are coming too.

I bought xenosaga 1 and digital devil saga set last year at a antique store. The smt games were sealed. I started them, but damn that random encounters is rough it makes all the ps1 games seem tame in comparison. I wish I had time for that or they were on switch as grinding on the go or wherever is doable.

Reminds me I need to play xenogears one day.

Star Ocean: Second Story R is the god-tier JRPG remake. I think that should be the template to follow for 16-bit and 32-bit JRPG remakes.

I like that you included Vandal Hearts. Fantastic SRPG. The hilarious blood spraying high into the air when you kill enemy units deserves a HD remaster. I'm one of the few that liked Vandal Hearts 2 as well.

we need modern remakes or re-releases of the PS2 Shadow Hearts trilogy

Xenogears would require a complete makeover and basically completing the second disc with dungeons, and to bring back Takahashi to helm it to ensure that part is done properly, which I don't think Square would be willing to do. Although I'd be grateful for just a remaster with sharp graphics, a full retranslation, and a way to speed up the text.

They really should do it though, before Takahashi dies and leaves it forever partly incomplete, like Murayama did with the Suikoden series.

Leave the 2D sprite-based games alone. They're perfect.

Remaster everything with polygons from the PS1. Every single game, they looked like ass back then and have aged like milk to become unplayable.

I never played Suikoden and never got into JRPGs. A buddy recommended the remaster and I'm hooked. Almost finished the fist one, now I want to play all of these JRPGs that have been remastered. I think what i like about it compared to other JRPGs that I have tried (mostly the newish FF games) is that the story is simple and the entire experience is pretty relaxing.

I'd love a Vandal Hearts and Vagrant Story remasters. I don't think Konami remembers the VH series exists, though.
This.

The first Vandal Hearts is amazing. It's always been overlooked compared to the big names, but it has an arcade-like, engaging feel, incredibly lovable characters, and fantastic music. Beyond the buzz around the blood splashes, it deserves to emerge from obscurity... but since it's Konami, unfortunately...
