Suikoden I&II HD Remaster - Reviews Thread

Why is the equipment and item menu so annoying to navigate? I don't even care about individuals having to carry their own stuff (which is antiquated) why is it so cumbersome to figure out of an item is good for a character?

Konami has zero consistency with their remake products. The contra and castlevania ports are all over the place with features. Why have rewind in castlevania but not contra? What's with the saving difference in all these games?

Just bare bones qol improvements
God the inventory management sucks ass. The only way to even know if a character can equip something is by transferring it to their inventory first, then going to the equip screen and checking. Especially annoying because this game constantly forces new characters into your active party with crappy outdated equipment.

Once I got effectively infinite money from the gambler dude, I started just buying new equipment from the armor shop anytime someone new got forced into my party. Just to avoid swapping shit back and forth from storage trying to figure out what they can use through trial and error.

But hey, it automatically saves when you enter a screen with a save point on it! Quality of life!!

I had a moment where I was like, No I must be doing something wrong cause this inventory management blows!!!

1997 lunarorbit is wondering why I'm bitching so much cause he loved this game.

One of these days I'll make a thread about what not to do in rpg remakes.

Edit: also why the fuck do the items you pick up just automatically go to the character in the #1 spot, (front row ti the left)? Someone leaves early in the story and of course they have my lightening rune and an urn in their possession. Never seeing those again.

Someone was saying that in the original PSX version it would show you the stat change when you were transferring equipment in the inventory screen, so the remake is a downgrade in this regard. It's been so long, I don't remember if that was the case but it wouldn't surprise me.

Man I'm still grateful that we at least have a way to play these games on modern systems and that Konami still recognizes their existence, but this just feels so half baked and it looks cheap. Suikoden deserved better

It has arrived:

Need to wrap up KCD2 and MH Wilds before jumping in though, hyped!

How's people progress? Finished S1 enjoyed it for what it is a product of its time 1995. I've seen posts where people prefer S1 to 2.. don't understand this at all. s1 isn't a great game. Still good for what it is.

I'm trying to farm double beat runes near the start of s2. Not much luck only one so far .

I'm three quarters the way through with S1. It's good, but I prefer S2. I can understand how someone could enjoy S1 more, but to me S2 expands upon S1 in lots of ways. Gotta love the big battles and duals in this franchise.

Played the originals back in the day, finished both of the remasters on hard(?) mode, Suikoden 1 is so ass oh my god. Suikoden 2 is an improvement in every possible regard, but most importantly the story events and storytelling are just light years ahead of S1. Now I just want to play Suikoden 3 again.

I didn't farm the OP runes in S2 and I'd just say don't waste your time because honestly, the game is easy even on hard mode.

I played roughly half of the first one for now, going to play more on the Deck during a long train ride next weekend... I played it as a kid back when it released and, of course, remember it very differently. I thought it would be much bigger, but actually you can probably finish it in around 15-20 hours.

New controversy.

Nonsense, considering that those games are from the PS1 era and can be on the cartridge without any problem.

This is some cheap ass bullshit.
The game is what 7GB?
This ain't some 64GB monster where the cart costs would be prohibitive. Fuck Konami again.

Did anyone get the platinum for this? I only have a few things left to do. Finishing the cooking, karens dance, squirrels and whack a mole.

However the ps5 versions are bugged and don't show the inputs on the dancing. Its extremely difficult to do without, as stages 4 and 5 are randomised unless you have an edict memory you would have the write them down each time.

and I've kinda given up.

Finished up Suikoden 1, series has always been a blind spot for me.

Just a great time in general. Really well paced story and a surprising amount of QoL stuff that seems ahead of its time (maybe the OG was different?).

The idea of 100+ party members sounded intimidating but definitely was not - they make it really easy to identify who can be recruited and the conditions to recruit people (when they exist) are usually pretty clear. Bringing new members into the fold was also pretty easy as the catch up XP is pretty substantial and with 6 party members you can easily hide the weaker ones until they get up to speed.

I loved the base aspect and being able to recruit things like Inn Keepers, Blacksmiths, Shops, Gambling, etc. to your base was awesome. Also being able to teleport to your base and then (mostly) anywhere else made getting around the world a breeze. Did a lot of save scum gambling in the base which makes it easy to outfit new party members with the best gear.

Story was awesome too, relatively grounded for a JRPG but I can't think of many that have as much scale on the political side of things.

Soundtrack absolutely slaps.

The combat is definitely the weakest part, lots of autoattacking, but it's also pretty quick and since there's not much incentive to fight lower level enemies you can skip a lot of it.

Gonna take a bit of a break before 2 but excited to get into it as it seems people are unanimous in it just being everything the first one but better

Im so pissed that there's no Switch 2 upgrade for this. I never saw anything posted ahead of time either that this would have a separate release coming...

There's been at least 4 games during Switch 2's launch without upgrade paths ...how shitty is that?

Anyway, disappointed with this remaster due to the fugly ai looking assets they decided would be better than the originals beautiful pixel art environments. Every time I play i cant get over this.
