Where are all the people *checks notes* spitting on Japanese culture? Are they in the room with us right now?

isn't that a bit of a paradox tho?

by "not appealing" to the west, the games are very japanese, which is currently very popular in the west... and was popular in the west up until the PS2 era as well.
so by not appealing to the west, and by making japan focused games, they are inadvertently appealing to the west :pie_thinking::pie_thinking::pie_thinking:

it seems like in order to not appeal to the west, they would need to make western style games like Life is Strange or Dragon Age... which aren't appealing to the west while trying to be appealing to the west... which in return would be really bad.

Masahiro Sakurai says Japanese developers should focus on making games that Japanese people like instead of trying to appeal to a Western audience!“A while ago, there was certainly a culture of making Americanized products, because various works were popular in the US. However, I feel that ‘Japanese game lovers’ overseas are not looking for such things, but for something unique and interesting from Japan. In other words, I think that the ideal would be to make games the way you like, as those who agree with you will enjoy them.”

Do you agree?

Maybe they should, maybe it would be nice if japanese games were more unique. I would be happy too if this would be the case. But i don't see how is this possible.

Is there a big market for such unique japanese games? Porbably not, they will cater to... ... japanese... and western fans of japanese culture... Niche audience.

And gaming industry at the moment is in a such state when non indie devs can't just make niche games anymore. Even AA games cost dozens of million now, AAA hundreds. Modern games cant' be profitable if they cater only to Japan and western japanese fans.

So before this can become a reality something need to happen to overbloadted budgets. With current costs of games development japanese games just can't not cater to the western audience, they won't get their money back if they do.
