I think it's real and just the same game without stutters and hitches. Upscaled maybe. It is released so quickly and with such low fanfare because it is a 40 dollar low effort remaster. I don't think they will ever do a full scale remake like you imagined because it would take too long/too much manpower as you implied. I would LOVE to be wrong on this.

Definitely one of the top and biggest game during it's time. Have this game on the PS3 first and it was easily my favorite game there with Fallout 3 being close too. Before that I was playing Morrowind on XBOX which was also one of my favorite games on the console. Morrowind was the game that got me into Bethesda and all because I thought the back cover looked cool in the store when I checked the XBOX section. Later during the end of the PS3 gen era, I got a decent PC and just rebought all of them for mods.
If it's just a lame remaster than it'll be pointless and Skyobivion would clearly be the game everyone goes for without anyone even caring for the Oblivion's low effort remaster. Was going for team Skyobivion anyway because it looks amazing and the devs put a lot of love behind it plus modding. And even for the casuals, a simple remaster would still look far too outdated for them to consider trying the game out for the first time.
Yeah a true Morrowind remake would be a dream come true. Still got the best lore and world and location. But it'll take even more time remaking it compared to Oblivion. At least Skywind looks amazing but no idea when it's coming out. At the very least Skywind will take longer than Skybviion at the very least.
Modern Bethesda would never do it justice. All that awesome, lore and world building dialogue would be zapped and every NPC would get a few voiced lines and they'd call it a day. Who knows if they'd even leave it feature complete without bringing the axe out. Otherwise, yeah, it's a nice dream. But vanilla Morrowind with OpenMW plays and looks well enough for my purposes as is, so I'm not holding my breath on it.
True, can't see it being anywhere as good. I'm still on MGE XE for mods but have heard good things about OpenMW too so might give that a try the next time I decide to go back to Morrowind. Hope Skywind does come out eventually maybe 2027 cause I doubt 2026 would be enough time.
OpenMW is great and is effectively a vanilla+ experience, which is what I like as I personally don't play with many mods in my Elder Scrolls titles. You can tinker with the core game settings, like how many cells will load and therefore the draw distance, play at high resolution, etc.

Well, considering there were some leaks in the past about this remake / remaster being a thing (like it being listed on the MS vs FTC court case leak, some profiles on LinkedIn, very specific descriptions from people allegedly affiliated with the studio working on it and so on), it's probably safe to assume it's coming. But I wouldn't bet on reported timing for announcement dates as these often come from leakers who have different variety of credibility. Just a few weeks ago there was a leaker who was claiming THPS3+4 will be shadowdropped on MS June conference, while reality showed that it wasn't true. This may be a similar thing where game may release this year, but the launch window might be very different

I never really cared for the original. I tried to play it after Skyrim and it wasn't for me.

I would avoid having high expectations. If something is shadow dropping that shouldn't give you high confidence that it will be great. If this was a serious effort MS would likely market it.
