Doug Bowser - "some people...may not be able to afford [the Switch 2's] price point. That's why we wanted to make the other Switch platforms available

Wow, amazingly bad optics amongst upcoming global recession. That's just brilliant marketing Mr, Bowser! I wonder how much were Mr, Mattrick's consulting fees? 🤨

So, i have come around on price. After i reflected on it for a few days. I don't have a problem even if the game is $90 or $100. BUT, the consumer would have to demand more from Nitnendo for the price. No half ass ports or games anymore. NONE. For example,

Mario Golf or Mario Tennis is the best ever. Not the half assed Mario Tennis Wii U or Mario Golf Super Rush.
Pokemon, better be the best ever.
Zelda remakes better get the Wind Waker HD treatment and not the Skyward Sword or Twilight Princess remake.

DK Country returns needs to be remake "ground up". Etc. not a cheap 3ds port.
Switch Sports and Mario Strikers need to actually work! Full STOP. Make a good damn game.

I also think, Nintnedo loses the ability to make weird content. Nintendo will have to listen to the consumer and essentially let the consumer dictate what franchises are getting worked on!!

Nintendo will loose an incredible amount of power to the consumer. But they will indeed make more money.

Do you think Nintendo is ready for all of that?

I'm sure Sony would've said the same thing about PS4 if asked about the price of the launch PS5.

What do you expect them to say, "Let me lower the price for you real quick"?

Most new systems now cost more than the previous one. Get over it.
Where's this hypothetical #SonyToo coming from?

Did Sony say something like this? No. "But they could have" is not worth talking about. Sony also launched a PS5 DE for $399 only, the same price the PS4 launch price, even after 7 years.

Let's not devolve another thread with #SonyToo and maybe criticize the company that's actually saying it right now?!

I love how triggered people are when an actual shitty situation is presented to them.

Yes let's defend the poor indie company nintendo. They need that 80 dollars for there games because they might not survive without that price increase. Actually they should raise the price to 100 dollars and include a go fund me at the beginning of each game so that you go fund them even more after u bought it.

Show us on Mario where Nintendo hurt you.

You're so angry at a company that you missed the point of the post. I'm not defending game prices going up. (I'm still indifferent to it either way.)

I'm just sick of everyone crying about it. On this and other forums, literally every topic or other topic is about Nintendo game prices. We get it, you're crying about a price increase. Post that shit in one of the other 500 topics that regurgitate the same crying. And they're ALL soulless corpos. Are you rallying elsewhere on the internet for better conditions for the poor little kids who make $1.00 a month while working 14 hours a day in sweatshop labor conditions? I bet you aren't, but you flaunt those new Nike sneakers when you get them. Yet heaven forbid a luxury item like video games cost a little more. No, now THIS is a real issue that we need to cry about endlessly on the internet. And the funny part is, most of the people crying will still go out and buy the games on day one or at full price. Vote with your wallet when the hardware and software releases. If the majority of the market feels as you do, the ramifications will be significant and apparent. If not, well then the market will have spoken because the average person is willing to pay and so are the brand fanatics. Meanwhile, you'll just still be crying on the internet.

I disagree with this. Consumers should have been demanding more from Nintendo for ages already.

Publishers increased gaming price from $60 to $70 when they were moving to a new generation and many of them offered new features (e.g., haptic feedback, adaptive trigger feedback, 3D audio, etc.). It at least made some sense; there was at least some justification.

Nintendo increased their price from $60 to $70 without offering anything new, and while they were on the same generation with Tears of Kingdom. Now they are increasing the price again for absolutely 0 reason. Their games aren't any bigger or better, and they aren't using any new technologies either. Nintendo games also cost the least. There is no justification for them to cost this much. And they should be delivering much higher value at the current cost already.

If you are indifferent, why does it bother you if people complain about the price?

What would be a fair price point to those disappointed in the price? $400? What did the original Switch launch at? I want to say the Wii was $250 at launch but the Wii was largely GC level of power, right? So the Wii is launching 5 years after the GC, similar power level but it has a motion controller it's going all in on. If the Switch 2 is sincerely overall stronger than a PS4/Xbox One (a considerable jump up from the Switch 1), what would a fair price be? I'm starting to wonder if the reason people are so frustrated about the price is more an issue of people having less expendable income than they used to, which I would say is a societal issue. I respect and love this forum's desire to avoid politics so I'm really not trying to go down that road, but maybe this whole pricing issue is just the frustrating place we've reached where maybe the middle class isn't what it used to be (people having less money to spend on entertainment)?

I can only speak for myself, I have no issue with the price because its brand new system with its own exclusives and I like Nintendo games.

I decided to skip PS5pro and saved money for Switch 2 since I dont think I would be missing out any game If I dont get Pro.

Didn't Sony release a PS5 edition in 2020 for exactly the same price as a PS4 back in 2013, even taking inflation into consideration? And even though the PS5 was much more "premium" than the PS4 when it first released...?

Also...2006 PS3 was more expensive than the 2013 PS4...which had the same price as one of 2020 PS5's editions.

"could have" "might have" "would have" doesn't really cut it here lol.

Anyway, Nintendo having its Don Mattrick moment. It will never be that serious but it's still funny to seel.

I think the price of the console is okay. Not great; not terrible.

However, the new prices for their games (which still look outdated, rehashed, and with little ambition) are just atrocious. I think that's what most people are mad about, which is bleeding into people complaining about the price of the console as well.

Overall, this launch has been full of weirdness by Nintendo. And people are frustrated because of how Nintendo is trying to nickle-and-dime gamers: $80 / £90 games, $10 glorified 'Welcome' manual, the physical carts fiasco, statements like these, etc.

I don't think the price of their console is a big issue itself, but it is just part of the bigger problem.

Well what really made the Mattrick moment so bad is, it was caught on camera. A text transcript is one thing; seeing his actual facial emotions, body language, and hearing the frustration (and almost contempt for people who were criticizing XBO reveal) in his voice with those words made them hit a lot harder.

And, not for the best WRT XBO's launch.
We need some AI voice generator to replicate what he said and a few minutes of Doug bowser footage. and that will do the trick.

Hey Doug, do you know what happened to the last cocky bastard that said something like this? Any idea how that generation went for the douchebags company?

I'm saying ANY consumer product rep would recommend it. Where is this entitlement "I should pay LESS for the newer product" BS coming from?

What are you really complaining about? That the new system costs more and bro didn't offer to lower the price??

S2DS is in full effect.

It still cost more than the PS4. And didn't Sony recently INCREASE the price of PS5?

The days of a console costing the same as the old console or decreasing in price are long gone. But sure let's just add complaint #35296 to the list. I'm sure tomorrow GAF will find 10 more things to bitch and whine about.

This line of logic has never been a winner in gaming, and it still sounds just as bad as when Mattrick tried it.

I'm excited for the system, but they're working overtime on trying to torpedo it.
Context matters. Matterick was defending a BS policy about making a console that had Mandatory internet checks just for you to use it. This screwed over people who would buy the system and be overseas or somewhere with no internet. It was a shit policy.

This is people complaining they have to pay more for a new console as if this is a crazy outlandish idea.

Currently you can get Astrobot digital bundle in US for $400. It's $450 for disk version. So Sony dropped the price.

The issue is that a lot of folks don't see the reason for especially pricing of games considering their production values or lack thereof.

And looking at JP, EU and UK prices, console pricing in US, CA and AU is a ripoff.

I completely agree; I'm just saying that the tenor is similar and a big PR misstep.

What did people think this thing would cost $299? I would argue if you can't afford $449 and $80. You should not be buying a $399 console and $70 game either. Everything is going up and we all have to make choices. I'm tired of hearing the whining about it though.

And all you have to do is give up your ability to ever own your games. I'm sure Nintendo could have released a cheaper all digital too. Point is typically prices haven't dropped (at least for physical based models)

If Nintendo could put a subscription fee on their hardware too keep it operational they definitely would.
I mean they're doing the best they can with locking voice chat, the virtual console, and the retro controllers behind an online subscription and using mario kart as the big launch game which is pretty online focused.

??? We are talking about similar digital bundle as with MKW? And you CAN buy a disk based model and buy disk based games.

I don't think it is appropriate to take such a position with the Switch. Certainly, some people cannot afford a Porsche so they do not have one. However, we are only talking about few hundred bucks with the Switch 2 so trying to justify the price by making such a statement makes no sense to me. Since people started complaining about the Switch 2 price I've been saying that those people have MUCH bigger problems in life if a $150.00 price increase impacts their bottom line and/or they cannot afford it. Like, if $150.00 matters that much do you how do you even afford FOOD?

The internet gets this one so so wrong.

"70.00$ is a non issue. Nobody is talking about it because everyone accepts it."

"80.00 is a bridge too far. Nintendo declares war on gamers. Death to Nintendo!"

The reason many people are struggling with this $10 dollar price bump is because most of you aren't gamers... you're collectors. This medium isn't for you.

No I'm talking about a system that does not accept physical cartridges at all. Nintendo could make a digital only switch but they have more respect for their customers.

Yea, you can buy one for the cost of $80...that's $30 MORE than just getting a physical version to begin with. Not exactly an ideal option.

First time ps3 leaders in charge said this about ps2 the ps3 failed then xbox did the same with xbone it failed its now nintendos turn

Nintendo in my opinion gona jave a real wake up call when nobody will want to buy their products redux it's really nothing new. Most casuals already got their HD Mario fix with switch 1 . Nintendo really thinks people and casuals will flock just cause it's Nintendo. Lmao Nintendo needs to rememebr gamecube days

Well, good luck with that. Nintendo is coming off their most successful product in history with many of their games selling north of 20 million units.

Nintendo knows their market better than most.
