Where do you rank Astro Bot amongst 3D Platformers?

For me it's at the top right now .

Maybe it has an unfair advantage being on the PS5 & using the DualSense controller but it really does stand far above the other 3D Platformers for now.

It was pretty good and looked really beautiful, but is nowhere near the top for me. The platformjumping mechanics are very barebones and never felt challenging. Though it is incredible for being the studio's first real foray into the genre and I look forward to see how they develop.

Haven't played it yet but I have tried out Playroom, which was a lot of fun, so I'm sure it'd rank high for me.

It's not even close to the likes of mario or crash but a nice attempt from Sony.
Maybe if they make more games in the series and tune the gameplay to stand on it's own.

Two of my favourites are Psychonauts 2 and It Takes Two.

Will see where it ranks when I play it.

I don't like stage based platformers like these as much if stages are short. Break up flow and momentum quiet a bit. Mario Odeyssey did a good job by keeping levels big.

Very fun, but I find the platforming parts far, far too easy most of the time. This makes it kind of weak in that aspect. The variety, music, aesthetics, and tight controls somewhat make up for that, but I only ever felt like I was half-engaged with the game outside of the symbol courses and Great Master Challenge. Astro's basic moveset could also use more tricks to interact with walls and platforms. I was initially having a blast with it and did until the end, but I kept waiting for the game to to take off, but it never reached the heights I thought it would and could.

It might be the best "modern" 3D platformer, but those don't have much of a presence anymore. Overall, similar quality to Mario Odyssey, maybe a bit better. Definitely not on the level of Mario 64, Galaxy, or even the original R&C trilogy (that in fairness are platformer shooters). It's a lot better than any Crash game and close to the original Spyro trilogy.

I would rank it below below Super Mario Galaxy and 3D World and Odyssey.

And it's the best game from Sony, all genres included, extremely satisfying for old PlayStation fans, lots of nostalgia.

That said, after finishing it I no longer have any interest in playing it. It's lacking challenge on normal levels and has no real replayability if you go for all bots right away, feels repetitive and downright boring when returning to previous levels. But getting the Platinum was awesome. The PS symbols levels were brutal.

Astro Bot was a fantastic platformer but I don't think it'll hold up over time

It wouldn't be much if it didn't have decades of PlayStation software history to pull into. The PS5 demo indulged on PlayStation hardware history.

nothing wrong with that - they're amazing experiences - but my favorites (SM Odyssey + 64 + Sunshine + the og Crashes) are just that because they stand on their own and are their own

Top ofc, there are many amazing platformers but astro currently got weightclass(hardware) advantage, its not its fault other platformers were made years before on much weaker hardware simply.

I'd probably take any 3D Mario over it save for 3D World. I enjoyed AstroBot a bunch, but after I collected everything I didn't have an urge to play through the levels again.

Presentation is top tier. Gameplay and moveset are extremely limited. Literally 1 jump with a hover. Even Mario on NES has varied jumps based on run speed with more variety in air control.

Very fun and enjoyable game primarily due to fun vibes, visual and audio spectacle and very good bosses. Core platforming is okay but below Mario. Some few moments of creative brilliance though do exist like the shrink level and time slow down powers. 9/10

It's galaxy tier, which is to say, only Mario 64 stands above it
Nowhere close to Galaxy.

It's a very fun game and, in terms of polish, at the same level as Nintendo platformers.

But the gameplay is so limited. The platforming is simple. There's little in the way of challenge and the move set doesn't develop in any meaningful way. Jump/hover - that's it.

Platinumed it and haven't picked it up since. There's nothing to return to.

Astrobot is insanely well made
It's probably the best platformer in gaming history in terms of gameplay

And easily surpass Mario games, Nintendo fans asses are burning here

A visually stunning and cute looking little game with tons of soul (which is a miracle in and of itself because it's essentially Sony corporate branding), but from an actual platforming point of view it's much less impressive. My mean issue with it is how limited your core move sets are, and how very little it has evolved from the free tech-demo that was Playroom. Maybe I'm spoiled by the move sets from the 3D Mario games (particularly Odyssey) where you can string multiple moves together creatively in order to get even further than the game explains. Astro Bot doesn't have anything remotely close like that.

All in all a very solid game that scratched some of the platforming itch I had, 7/10 for me, but definitely not in my top five or maybe even top ten 3D platformers.

Its best 3d Platformer ever due to the technology used in it. Has the best graphics, higher resolution, best framerate and its fun. Terrific game.

And a 94 in Metacritic.

I love platformers but perceive the game to be easy to plow with less interesting mechanics than Mario so I haven't played it yet. Came close to being my tipping point to grab a PS5.

I vow to come back and update this once I play it lol.

The only 3D platformers I have played are Astro games, first Psychonauts and Sackboy: A Big Adventure. So take my opinion as a grain of salt.

Psychonauts has the best writing among all but Astro Bot is easily the best.

C tier...

nothing special in any way other than technical polish.

it's very simple and has no depth whatsoever, and the weird safeguards they have where you can't walk off of certain ledges, make it also feel sub par.
almost every single gimmick they added is recycled from other games (mostly from Mario titles) and the level design is also pretty unremarkable.
enemy variety is very low and the default enemies can't even hurt you.

all in all, it's babie's first 3D platformer basically. super easy, no depth, a "best of" of older plartfomers' gimmicks, and technically well made.

It is my personal favorite of all time. Not technically as advanced as other platformers, but beats all others in fun factor and charm for me.

I feel like we've been comparing platformers to Mario since the NES. And none really compared until Astro Bot.

I'm not saying it is better than Mario, but I can't confidently say the reverse, either.

What I CAN say is Astro Bot Rescue Mission is the best VR game I've played and was a "Mario 64 moment".

Yeah that was it for me as well. I got my platinum and was up on the hype clouds and rated it a 10 at the time but looking back I wouldn't go through it again. Normal levels didn't have enough challenge to make them fun, could plow through them easily and it was often annoying to have to go through them again just to get a missed bot.

When people say this is just fun to play, I associate that with the way Astro Bot animates.

Thats all there is to it? Or does it have some other qualities that elevate it?

If its just animations, I don't see that as inherently a good thing. Wouldn't stand the test of time.

It genuinely was. Something I never experienced in a Mario game replaying levels over and over for stars.
Yup. Happens when there is no challenge, feels like a time waster, even if it only takes like 5 minutes at most I often went in with a deep sigh.
Meanwhile, the PS symbols levels were brutally difficult, often frustrating but never boring. I loved those. Should've had more levels like that.
