We really are into the doldrums of Spring now. There might be games in the top 30 with less than 1,000 sales.

Going to be a pretty boring 6 weeks unless I'm forgetting anything, but then there will be more to discuss.

Ok numbers this week, with the Switch 2 around the corner i really doubt that the PS5 reach 10 million like some people are predicting.

Nah, design-wise it made way more sense than the disk version which looks like it has a weird lump

I don't think losing in sales against even PS5pro was a good argument. Just make the split sales looks more silly.

It's like the Switch Lite, why would you buy the cheaper option if the slightly more expensive option is way better ?

Problem is, you can't get Switch Lite and buy a dock later. Unlike PS5 DE, the idea was 'if you want digital OR to buy a disk drive later, get this one', when in the end consumers of either physical and digital are buying regular PS5 instead of the DE.

Not true for the first model (the one which I have). (Yes I have the DE, that's why I defend my bad choice)

Switch sales definitely slowed down in Japan, but that's to be expected at this point. It's been over eight years, and Switch 2 was announced early this month & its coming in June. Japan's ready to move on to the next gen.

PS5 sales are bad all around. Sub 10K hardware (could be slightly offset with pickup of rented units), zero software in Top 10 (so likely very low performers in the Top 40, if any), and IIRC they're getting hit with another round of PS+ price increases too. If any platform at this point has the most to lose in market share gains of Steam & Windows for gaming in Japan, it's PlayStation. We've already been seeing it happen, question is can SIE turn things around or will the decline just continue?

Xbox is such a footnote at this point they aren't even really worth talking about IMHO. Pitiful sales as usual; without a massive revamp of the platform (which I'm guessing the PC hybrid plans are attempting to do), Xbox hardware will continue its necrosis in Japan and that'll be that.

The Monster Hunter series has fallen in Japan, a modern-day tragedy.

The drop in PS sales for the game is probably being made up for with PC (Steam) sales instead, like with quite a few other Japanese IP i.e Street Fighter 6. But you wouldn't see that in Famitsu or Media Create charts since they only track physical.

That said, I'd feel confident guessing Capcom are working on something MH-related for Switch 2. Probably a new exclusive (timed) entry even. I mean, Nintendo's already got a From Software exclusive, was anybody expecting that? They could get something with Capcom if they wanted.

Been a while since switch was below 30k but it will keep doing the numbers as not everyone wants to jump on board the new one so as long as Nintendo keep making them they will have a steady stream of sales. Quiet month for new switch releases only a couple due for me this month although there's a bunch releases but not stuff I want.

As for ps5 lol not much to really say, if mohun can't reinvigorate sales it's probably over.

lol monster hunter is killing it, probably sold 500-600k digital on PS , so 1.3-1.5 million plus another million + on PC. Realize ps5 software sales are above 60% digital attach rate in most markets. So assuming it sold less than half digitally in Japan would still out the game at 1.3 million on PS.

(Week 4) Xenoblade Chronicles X Definitive Edition - 3,774
Total 101,429

For a remaster on an aging console that's going to be replaced soon, it's doing pretty decently.

Also, I wish there was a public resource to see all these numbers. It's a pain in the ass to go back and check the numbers manually.

EDIT: I have included all the other Xeno games.

For future you can try https://sites.google.com/site/gamedatalibrary or https://nichebarrier.com/

They are what I use

Xenoblade is a good example to counter the arguments against Nintendo reviving Star Fox, F-Zero, Punch-Out and other because they're "niche franchises". It isn't a stellar seller in the level of their top guns, but they're still very invested into the franchise.

The time may has passed to revive them (for the time being), those titles would have benefited from the big install bases and momentum of the Switch a year or 2 ago (I'm thinking like Pikman 4/ 3D Kirby/Fire Emblem) but with it Switching generations I think new Star Fox, F-Zero, Punch-Out would be sent out to die right now.

I disagree, they'll be fine on Switch 2. Nintendo brought back even nicher stuff than that for Switch 1 with good results, Switch 2 won't change the ecosystem that much.

PS5 software sales don't make any sense. Only 3 games in the list and 2 of them are huge franchises complete with spin off movies. yet the game sales are woeful.

Shit for everyone but Nintendo have an excuse

MH still not close to a million? PS5 out there killing franchises.

MH Wilds is selling like shit on PS5 compare to the previous titles. Both MH Rise and MH World sold over 1.3m physical copies within a week.

While Monster Hunter Wilds' physical launch numbers in its heartland in Japan are certainly impressive, it is worth noting that it sold significantly less than its predecessors, namely 2021's Monster Hunter Rise and 2018's Monster Hunter World. According to Famitsu, Monster Hunter Rise sold over 1.3 million physical copies on its main platform in the Nintendo Switch while Monster Hunter World sold over 1.35 million copies in just its first three days of release in Japan.

What about it doesn't make sense, given its userbase and software?

Its an expensive device for enthusiasts, so the big franchise (MH) will stick around for a bit, while smaller games like AC and Atelier will slide down the charts quickly.

It's not going to have many evergreens.
Damn! - Sales are in the toilet in Japan. Switch has an excuse I suppose but bloody hell.
It's going to get worse before it gets better.

Capcom really carried the Japanese market in the first 5 months of the year. But from June onwards the lineup is way more interesting for all platforms, not just Switch 2.

Going to be lots to talk about!

Does anyone think Capcom might pivot to Switch 2 Development and just port to PS5 and PC?

This is bad for MHWilds. :(
MH will absolutely be on Switch 2 in some form, either with Wilds or the next game.

Past and future RE will also come, which is a step up from the original Switch.

The big question is Capcom's other current gen only titles. Is Switch 2 in the pipeline for Dragon's Dogma 2, Onimusha, Pragmata etc.?

There are apparently 6.797.163 consoles in the country and yet new releases can't make 40 thousand. Even if digital sales were double that of physical it's still low.
Combination of:

1. Exports
2. Rising digital ratios
3. Not many big new releases. When PS5 does get a major release they sell better than 40,000 physical

Edit: If you look at what sells well on Switch, its largely games not available on PS5 or franchises mainly associated with Nintendo.

The sales result for MH Wilds on PS5 certainly aligns with the sentiments from other analysts.

There's no need to damage control for this game on PS5 here.
