Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 ≼| OT |≽ La Belle Fantaisie

Well then, i have no more explanation.
Did you experience atrocious stutters on Hogwart's Legacy, Silent Hill 2 or Oblivion ?
If the answer is No, then you're definitely someone lucky enough not to feel them and i'd gladly apply for eye exchange so i can finally enjoy Unreal Engine slops more lol.

I did in oblivion, its awful there. I dont feel that in here

No shit, Sherlock?

Japanese dev teams have been making great games with much smaller teams and budgets than the West for decades. Japan's salaries are now much lower than in much of the West, the product of 30 years of economic stagnation

Even in the West, only recently with 2000+ dev teams for AAAA Western wokeslop titles has it really gotten absolutely out of hand

But Europe still has lower salaries on average than North America, and even in France, the cost of living is much lower than anywhere in US or Canadian cities. These Sandfall guys were probably in Paris and still could live on half of what Americans need to survive
Isnt ubisoft based in Paris. Pretty sure the AC shadows team is not the Montreal team and is located in France, most probably in Paris. And yet ubisoft has 12,000 developers who cant seem to create a decent cutscene to save their life.

This isnt japan vs west or europe vs u.s. this is simply a bunch of talented people working efficiently and making a fantastic game. something everyone from Naughty Dog to insomniac, capcom and CD Projekt can learn from.

i noticed some stutters early on but figured it was due to the setting with all those NPCs that will never be there for the rest of the game which takes place on a separate island with no NPCs.

A lot of times these pc benchmarks are done in opening zones and dont really measure the correct performance.

the game is super linear and has a lot of those loading corridors, its not open world as far as i can see. so it shouldnt really be impacted by constant traversal stutters like oblivion.

the creepiest aspect of bloat is the way it eventually takes on a life of its own & begins to auto-self-perpetuate. at which point, it becomes massively difficult to ever get back to where you were...

is there no map at all when you are in an area? Everything looks the same, so easy to get lost. Game also needs fast travel options for long distances.

Still 10/10 so far, just got to act 2. Bought on Xbox, will double dip on the Pro for the plat. This studio has reduced basically every other studio to rubble.

Lorien is a modern day Nobou.

These tracks are out of this world. So much range in tracks and it all fits perfect.

The gestral village tracks used made me think of final fantasy 9 in its charm. The art direction there and the music just evokes that.

Game is master craft I'll say in being the first western attempt at a jrpg that truly nails it.

Up until now we've just had rpg maker indie tards making pixel games to help Chrono trigger fans jerk off.

I've been trying to avoid this thread because I want to go in blind but now I see the post count competing with the Oblivion thread so I just gotta pop in to say. I bought it and the game is amazing!

Also very refreshing to play a JRPG style game with a cast of (almost) entirely adults. Anime ones made in Japan with the cast of plucky 13-17 year olds is starting to get tiresome. Trails through Daybreak had the audacity to have like a 21 year old protagonist and all the characters called him old and grandpa for 70 hours and I'm just eye-rolling the whole time. This is also why I liked Metaphor.

I was burned by the last three JRPG-type games I tried: Metaphor, FF7 Remake, FF16.

Grew up loving JRPGS but these all irritated me and I bounced off.

Am I a glutton for punishment if I try this game?

I dislike Turnbased combat and I often give up on these games, but man, I kinda don't want to miss out on Clair Obscur because that story for one, sounds amazing.

So you need to be really good at TB combat or can you choose a difficulty setting that you basically get the story with minimal or very easy combat?

I'm not a fan of turn based either, but I'm really digging this one so far. Is has a little bit of interaction, like parrying dodging and aiming, that makes it feel really good.

I say the most important aspect of battles is action oriented, not turn base. You need to really be able to dodge and parry incoming attacks in this game

Is there a stock default running animation that comes with UE5? I swear the animation is the same in both Oblivion Remastered and this 🏃‍♂️
The difference is that the running animation in oblivion is absolutely awful. This feels great.

I hate turn based combat with a passion but with the dodge, parry and counter mechanics being realtime, i feel like I am playing an action game. You also get to participate in offensive attacks by nailing QTEs for extra damage which keeps even offensive turns interesting.

Plus it looks really cinematic unlike those cheap Xcom knockoffs.

The QTEs during combat I can't nail them for shit. I don't understand what's going on. Dodge and parry I'm fine with but the attacks one I'm just not understanding.

just press the button as soon as you see it. Dont wait for it to go the yellow bar. Thats for the Perfect attacks that are hard to get right.

I know everyone and their brother has talked ad nauseam about the prologue, but damn man…

One of my favorite and most underrated parts was
the LACK of music during the Paintress's awakening, the sudden cut of any sound other than the ambience, the stillness. THAT is what makes your stomach get caught in your throat, your breath to get unconsciously held or stifled, and for your eyes to stay *glued* to screen against their better judgement. I felt as though I was right there with Gustave and Sophie, standing next to them on that dock, or underneath the towering Paintress, whom made herself so damn intimidating by doing so little. Like, all she did was start moving, and I was already personally disturbed by her.

But those few seconds of complete silence? That shit was art, genuinely masterful storytelling that has now become one of my favorite moments in my personal gaming tenure. The eventual payoff of the Gommage was utterly heart wrenching, but damn did that ONE scene with The Paintress so coldly about to upend so many people's lives really get to me.

I'm a couple of hours in now (lack of time this week), but I can tell how the entirety of the prologue is going to stick with me for a long time. That is masterful storytelling, and that is artistic expression done beautifully and powerfully.

This game is a ducking masterpiece.
I thought my audio was fucked for a second. Then it hit me.

The only thing thats stopping this from being GOTY for me is the QTE stuff. Pretty much everything else is fucking amazing.

I'm having such a great time with this game on GP. Every character so far has a great design, especially the females. The battles keep things fresh with changing up animation speeds to keep you on your toes. I was a bit worried at first because I wiped a few times on the test battle with the girl before you go to the harbor. Thankfully, after that learning experience, haven't wiped since. I like that this is completely optional, but I wanted to obtain the token from her to completely buy all of the items presented. Taking the time to learn the timing in that battle paid off later. Excellent game design.

Opposite for me.. easy for attacks, okay at dodging but parries? FML

Fuck dodging & parrying. Yes I suck at them, but my problem is that I played theoretically harder games that offered better cues.

Also, it's one thing when action moments are added to a turn-based game as a small bonus (like in Yakuza 7 & 8), it's another when the combat system revolves around being good at them, because enemies punch very hard even on normal.

Ah ok I didn't realize I could do that. I kept trying to wait. Yea I'd rather just hit it at any point instead of constantly failing which is what's happening now.

This is actually what I love is that the parrying/dodging is kind of required to learn. I hate when games put in a unique mechanic and you never have to use it because the game is so easy.

Thanks guys!

So the only thing you can't do is move around freely during combat? Those mechanics do seem like things that can make a otherwise "boring" fight quite engaging. Echo Generation gave us some player control during battles too, without that I likely wouldn't have finished it.

You when QTE starts there is yellow on the QTE box, you need hit that to get perfect.

I think some enimies hit too hard early game when you're still trying to learn the timing and cues of attacks and that makes it frustrating. I've found going higher defense with my builds have allowed me to get better with the timing of enemy attacks without dying multiple times.

Yeah I don't have a problem with having to learn something. My issue here is that I fail to recognize the ideal moment to trigger the move. No weapon flash, no sound, nothing. Gotta observe enemy limbs or their weapons? Last year I finished Stellar Blade and in that game I only struggled for a short while and I started being decent (maybe even good?) at making dodges and parries. :/

What's funny is that offensive QTE's are actually fun and I get perfect most of the time. But at least I get a bar charging on screen so I can rely on something.

I just got to the gestral village, give me build pointers. I've got the burn synergy going on and I've started to unlock abilities that inflict break, but Gustave in particular seems kind of lame compared to the girls.

He can be built like a Tank and primarily has a builder spender Overdrive playstyle.

Yea it's tough. I've actually had an easier time with the parry than the dodge which is weird. The offensive QTEs I can't hit for shit. Got some advice here though so I expect I'll do much better tonight when I play. Drank tons of coffee so I'm wired and ready to stay up till like 4am. I woke up at 5 to train today but fuck it.

Each attack has its own timing, so you have to get used its timing before you can do it properly. It's not something you can be good at purely on a reaction time basis. I like it because it simulates the idea that the more you use an attack the better you get at it.

I finished the prologue and played a bit further until I beat the first boss you encounter in Act I, and god damn, what an opener for my man Gustave and the rest of the crew!

Probably this has already been mentioned multiple times, but yeah, the English voice acting and soundtrack in this game are stellar.

I'm on the same boat as you. I thought Metaphor was really, really overrated. Even though I liked FF7 Remake, it was primarily due to the nostalgia...the story was SUPER cringe at times. And FF16 was the most disappointing game ever for me...a total "cop out" of an RPG.

I am 10 hours into Expedition 33 and all I want to do is play more and experience more of the story. The pacing is great, combat is incredible and fun, music is phenomenal. Can't say enough good. Definitely recommend buying.

Yeah it's my only small minor complaint about the game so far. I'd love some kind of cue for when to parry

parrying seems super easy to me. you don't need a flash or anything, just time your button press to the usually very well telegraphed attack animations.
it's not like in Dark Souls where you have to keep your own parry animation's delay in mind or anything, it's just hitting the button to the beat essentially.

So, how is the PS5 Pro version's Quality and Performance mode compared to PS5 and Xbox Series X?

What's the best mode to play?
