Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 ≼| OT |≽ La Belle Fantaisie

Does this game avoid the horrible cringe and childish dialogue common to modern FF games etc? I just can't deal with that shit, it made me give up on FF7R after a few hours (along with the game just being boring). I could play a good turn based RPG if it's actually tolerable for adults with functioning brains.

Yes.

It's actually surprisingly mature in it's approach.

Never played anything like this, what other games are similar? (dont want it to be jrpg)
There's quite nothing like this game, this is why it's so refreshing and good.

Absolutely none of that, it's very mature and even less cringe than a lot of movies and series.

FF7 Remake is a cringefest, couldn't finish because of it. Clair's "theatrical" and sometimes naive like FFX, but more mature.

You just read my mind. I couldn't have said it better myself. The most annoying thing in FF7R and FF15 was that! their consumers are 30-40 years olds. But why do they target 13 yo teenagers? Stupid managers at it again.

Just started the game. It's very pretty. Too early to judge the content but holy crap I hope they fix the text/subtitle size. I'm stuck recuperating in bed and I can't see the tiny text even at "Large" setting on

Its this. It's so this. When it seems a lot of media is getting infantalized, games that just lean in to being mature and thoughtful with real themes is just a breath of fresh air.
I like how this game doesn't throw swear word after swear word (well except for merde of course lol) just to be cool and edgy, or sex jokes/scenes. Instead it knows when to be serious and when to be light hearted. Really love that.

Completed the game tonight. Total playtime 40 hours, played through my entire night shfit and long into the nxt morning.

What a fucking experience. It's leapfrogged right up into my top 5 games of all time, no question whatsoever. Absolutely adored it.

For the 3rd time I'm saying this, I can not believe this was only made by 33 people. It just defies logic they can create something so polished, so unique, it is a real labour of love to the medium.

I'm still on Act I and yeah, the game is good.

Combat, voice acting, story, everything is firing on all cylinders.

Some thoughts:

* The game is clearly AA, not AAA. The UI in menus is barebones, some graphical inconsistencies, lip syncing problems, animations ...
It's more Plague Tale in terms of polish, and not like other AAA games, and thats understandable.
* Prologue was good but ... yeah, I havent felt that emotional response that some people here seems to have felt.
* Music and combat are fucking incredible. Just beat a boss that could one shot me by parrying/dodging all of his attacks. The adrenaline rush was something else. Incredibly addictive.

That old dude that wipes the expedition is totally Gustave from the future, right?

FF7 Part 3 should use Expedition 33 overworld system. Absolutely brilliant adaptation of old classic 2D RPGs to the modern age.
FF7 Part 3 ll be more bloated than part 2 and it ll earn 11/10 around the globe, be prepared for 100+ hours of cringe dialogue and subpar content.

Bruh... Maelle's virtuose stance is OP, we need a higher max difficulty level.

That game desperately needs a remaster/remake.

I'd be willing to pay a lot for it.
When was the last time you played it. I played it a few years ago and it hasn't held up at all. The game is very front loaded on its first disc.
The random encounters are insanely high and you barely get any xp from them, making them pointless. Most levels come from bosses.
Item management is awful.
The addition system was their attempt to give some agency to turn based combat and it's awful. These stupid square animation that rotated into a box, is just so dumb to time it too.

Loved it at release. Aged poorly.

Absolute insanity of a game.

20 hours in and I'm still getting new stuff. Magnificent!

Would like to share who I'm rocking so I will put it in a spoiler just in case

Currently my party is Verso, Monaco, and Lune. Thought I would never replace Sciel but Monaco had a different saying in this!

In the quiet hum of a late-night shift, my coworker and I took our first steps into what I can only describe as a landmark achievement in gaming. Within mere hours of playing on the PS5, it became resoundingly clear this could well be a new benchmark for the medium.

It has been many, many years since I have been so thoroughly captivated, if I am honest with myself not since the fateful day I imported Demon's Souls from the Asian market and found myself spellbound by its unknown brilliance. This game echoes that same feeling of discovery, but with a level of polish and vision that feels almost miraculous, something that was lacking in the early Fromsoft games. For them to get this so right on their first game is really quite impressive.

Every element encountered thus far exudes an artistry and craftsmanship that is, frankly, rare in today's landscape:
  • An utterly distinctive art style that breathes atmosphere into every corner of the world, as if the environment itself were a living, sighing character. Again it reminds me of Boletaria or even FF9 oddly.
  • Voice acting and presentation so impeccable that it dissolves the boundary between performer and player, immersion is easy.
  • A combat system that feels startlingly fresh—an elegant fusion of familiar mechanics, innovatively reimagined into something both intuitive and reactive. Going in I thought I would hate the QT overuse but it just works
  • Now for my fellow OST autists - a soundtrack of such haunting beauty and power that it stands proudly alongside the golden era of Final Fantasy—music that doesn't merely accompany the game, but elevates it into memorable set pieces
  • A narrative (so far) that flows with a rare momentum, paced with a precision that modern storytelling often sorely lacks in games nowadays. It feels so attuned

I cant afford to buy a copy for myself until payday since I bought Oblivion, the prospect of completing it with my coworker over the coming night shifts fills me with joy - we explored each fromsoftware game together af launch, and I much feel the same wonder as I did with those games.

top hat tip to the dev team, they are very deeply attuned to the magic of videogames tbh. I hope this sells like gangbusters so we get to see another legendary studio take full form... I actually cant fucking believe only 30 people pulled this off with a low end budget.. it is just unbelievable, how???
I'm thoroughly impressed with their vision, art, gameplay, and narrative. An amazing first effort from them.

Lads, anyone?
I haven't seen the "Danger" message so away on that first one, but I was able to beat it without too many problems at level 16. It is still a one-shot kill from its attacks, but its basically a dodge/parry skill check, My damage output was good enough at that level to get it down within 5 minutes without making too many mistakes.

EDIT: Playing on normal

Absolutely incredible game. Totally engrossed in it.

If you're on PC, try this fix! It gets rid of the horrific sharpening and makes the game look incredible.

full fix list:

- Skip intro logos.
- Enable developer console.
- Remove 30fps cap in cutscenes.
- Disable letterboxing/pillarboxing in cutscenes.
- Disable forced sharpening.
- Fix FOV issues when using ultrawide resolutions.
- disable forced post-process sharpening
- enable background audio

Does this game have any surprises in the vein of games like MGS2, Nier Automota, or Ocarina of Time and the like? I feel like there must be more lurking under the surface, as good as the opening hours are.

Not too far but there is no real, consistent tell for parries. There just isn't. That Lancelier guy had no tells. No sound. Just get used to it by trial and error. Dodge is more forgiving but parry feels way too unnecessarily strict, almost just frame bad. Maybe add blue and red parries with different benefits and room for error? As it is, parries feels a bit frustrating.

Some nit picks still stand, blurry environment (Perf. Mode), bad facial animations, and small font/UI and actually a poor UI overall.

Surprisingly don't think Charlie Cox is all that here. The direction he's been given seems all over the place.

I didn't realize how much I like Charlie Cox. He was def a selling point for me and there's a comfort to having him around. I guess I did watch DD repeatedly and formed some type of bond.

I also just realized there's a performance mode. Wow, that felt good to switch to.

I'm still in act 1 and just did 9,999 damage with the 4th character. LMAO

Edit: I just did it again. Without even trying She is op as fuck.

The parries have a bit of a learning curve. Different enemies have different wind ups, speed, etc. By watching the actual animation and timing the parry precisely to near the point of contact I have been able to overcome the challenges more consistently. Personally I'm glad it works the way it does. It teaches you how to rely on your muscle memory. The sound ques are also a great way to learn them. But yeah, the dodge is more forgiving, so mixing it up is good to learn how to deal with different enemies when you encounter them for the first time.

The parry along with counter attack becomes extremely powerful, to the extent that when you have the proper buffs/debuffs set in place you can easily chop 1/3 or 1/2 (or all) of an enemies' life bar in one hit.
It's a risk/reward thing for sure and I'm glad the game doesn't have like colored ques because it would be way too easy that way IMO. You can still get by with leveling different stats and using healing just fine if you want to go down that path too (playing on normal here). I imagine story mode is much more forgiving as well.

Umm yeah. I think I might have completely broke the game. I'm consistently doing 9,999 damage with sciel in act 1 haha

Edit: nevermind, apparently enemies get hundreds of thousands of health in act 2

Yes you're limited to 9999 dmg but then it opens up again

The game just pissed me off by trying to explain Sciel to me. Tf is you talking bout?

A lot of people think Maelle is OP but I think Sciel is fucking ridiculous, at least in early game. 😂

Tell me more

Focused Foretell + Sealed Fate triggers twilight. Focused Foretell then Phantom Blade = giga-damage. I use a weapon that applies 10 Foretell, that stacks to 20 with Twilight.

This game is fun.

I think I have perfected Dodging lol. 3 perfect dodges in a row!

C5HaVBv.gif
I fought a side boss today that had 6 turns in a row for himself. He only had one attack which was 11 hits in a row.

You had to parry because he did over 1k a hit. It took 2 of My turns to beat it.

So yeah about 120 some parries in a fucking row to survive…

9x89DiE.jpeg

This is one game where being underleveled for a fight is an invitation to git gud instead of face an impossible challenge

The only damage I could really do to Chromatic Abbest (optional boss found in Abbest Cave) was counter damage from parties. Nothing else I was hitting it with did anything more than scratch damage

So I parried him until he died. The End

any starting on hard? I always try to in jrpgs, but end up going back to normal after i get beat down because I don't really minmax

Min/max is probably not as big of a deal on this game as dodge/parry. Dodge/Parry can be unforgiving. I am not too far in but I'm not a fan of a souls-like dodge system in a turn-based RPG. I am probably the minority though so... ...insert old man yelling at clouds image.

Yeah I suck at it, never played a souls game so it is all new to me. Really can't figure out the timing unless I repeat over and over again.
