What a Sorry State of Gaming from all sides

Gamer79

Predicts the worst decade for Sony starting 2022
Rockstar: I made a topic a few months about why we have not seen any news or new Trailers on GTA 6 and of course all the shills quoted rockstar, "But they confirmed it was 2025!" Normally I understand a delay but not when your last game was 13 fucking years ago.

Nintendo: They are creating a WiiU situation here. Of course the Nintendo Dorks will have it sell out for the first year of launch, after that is the issue. The Crazy prices, the confusing upgrade packages, and just weird marketing is going to confuse the Causal gamer. Like it or not, the casual gamer is where the big bucks are. Switch 2 will be a success but no where near the original. Corporate Greed hit Nintendo hard.

Xbox: Don't even get me started. There are few exclusive worth a Damn anymore on the Xbox console. Microsoft purchased a ton of companies but I wonder where the fuck the games are? On top of that, they have the nerve to jack up the prices on their low selling Xbox Series console. Just fucking stupid.

Sony: Man they fell out this generation. So many great Sony first party exclusive games on PSx, PS2, PS3, PS4, and the PS5 is just crickets. There have been very few first party games for the PS5 and do not see much on the horizon. They spent Billions on bullshit GAAS games and have nothing to show for it. Compared to previous generations, the PS5 library is pathetic.

PC: The biggest player in the PC space Nvidia just released their most shitty product ever. The overpriced 50xx series is a piece of shit and not worth the value. It's barely an upgrade from the 40xx series and now you can openly find 50xx series cards on Shelves(corrected). They even lied about the prices when shown. The prices they displayed on their reveal you cannot even find at big named retailers. The performance increases over the 40xx series are minimal.

Thank god for game emulation and older games. New games keep asking for more money because of "production cost" but the product is getting worse. They want I and others to pay more money for a worse product.

Pathetic!

People really selling the "Switch 2 bad" narrative as hard as they can. The prices aren't that crazy, it will be the cheapest console once Sony jacks up their prices any day now. The upgrades are as straight forward as last gen and the marketing is not weird or confusing, it's very normal and easy to understand -- it's literally Nintendo Switch 2, it can't be easier than that. Everyone that hates Nintendo is hoping for a Wii U situation and isn't gonna get it.

To the contrary, the prices of games have stayed the same for decades. I still remember buying n64 games, virtual boy, ect.

In 1996, new N64 games typically cost between $60 and $80.

The cost of making AAA games is higher than ever and the prices for those games needed to go up. We talked about that endlessly on here, and finally they have.

PC has more issues now than ever, they have higher price for entry and UE5 stutter makes us question whether Windows is the best platform for gaming. However, their audience also only plays older f2p games, humble bundle and deals. Very few play new slate releases, and that is not a healthy market. PC market has been fucked by PC gamers for years and they are going to have to start ponying up like everyone else. The industry demands it.

Sony fucked up with the GAAS initiative and screwed the pipeline.

MS just no longer cares about hardware and passive aggressively wants it to die. They are raising prices to move people onto gamepass and also to virtue signal how bad the trade war is for political reasons inside their home country the US.

Zero fucks are given. The 10 extra dollars we have to pay in the US isn't relevant and isn't the issue. Other counties are getting jacked the fuck up by this way, way worse, but us here in the US will whine the loudest about our little 10 dollar increase because we are entitled.

Newsflash. Prices go up as time goes forward. Back in your youth, movies cost a penny. You think you are immune to natural inflation over time because you are too badass to mess with, but MS and Nvidia are calling that bluff and nobody will do shit about it. Go play old games I guess? I'll be playing the new games which are better than the old ones mostly. Your rose tinted glasses are the worst part of the OP.

Dude, every topic you create is an angry rant. I can understand being frustrated with the state of the industry, because the last few years have been a brutal shitshow of unforced errors exacerbated by bleak economic conditions, but if you are this frustrated all the time about a hobby that should be a source of joy and escapism, then you seriously should stop following gaming news and just stick to the retro games you mention in your last paragraph. There's no value in constantly surrounding yourself with shit that only upsets you.

Every time someone brings up how games cost $80 in the 1990s I want to punch myself in the face.

In the 90s, car payments were half as much
In the 90s, housing was much much cheaper
In the 90s, eating out was 1/4 the cost
In the 90s, groceries were 1/4 the cost
In the 90s, purchasing power was way higher
In the 90s, college tuition was 1/4 the cost

so go ahead, keeping justifying $80 games and $600 machines because it was just "like this" in the 90s.

Edit: it seems some people missed the point of this post. In the 90s it was easier to buy $80 games because everything else in life was much much cheaper than today. It's hard to justify $80 on games in 2025 considering how everything has exploded in costs.

I'm having a great time, the games that have been coming out over the last 18-24 months have been great across the board.

But then all the hardware I purchased I did so during their respective launch windows. So I sympathise with those who played the waiting game.

Have you considered a new hobby OP. Try a music instrument or something.

I agree. That or he needs a prolonged break away from gaming. He ran away from playstation thinking PC would solve all his problems, only to still be an angry man.

Might be for you, I've been having a lot of fun with videogames.

Just this year I've played Path of Exile 2, KCD2 and Clair Obscur, all quite amazing games. Add the backlog of amazing retro games and yeah I can see myself enjoying this hobby until I die lol.

Hardware from all parties and all industries have been a disappointment.

Games are a mixed bag this gen. Lots of good and lots of flops.

Things are going well on my end.

Good games, enjoying the hardware I've purchased at msrp, and a few good titles on sale lately.

I usually am very optimistic and generally just enjoy playing games without any of the politics, prices or console wars / PC superiority.

But I do as of late find it very hard to disagree that the gaming landscape is slowly going to shit, didn't bother me too much as I could always buy what I wanted and not care what a game costs but Prices are out of control and greed is out of control. Basically a lot of companies and developers are taking the "Shut the fuck up you cunt and just buy it because we know you will" attitude.

It's starting to seem a tad bit disheartening

Agreed on both counts.

We're getting probably some of the best games in the last 6~8 month window than we did through the entire gen so far.

And also that early adoption has (surprisingly) worked out better this time around, usually it's the opposite.

Weird times, but if someone already has the capability to play them, the software is really good right now.

Gaming is not about hardware, the actual games (at least those by real developers) and not corporate content conveyer belts have been good.

People like to say that things are worst than ever, but up until a few years ago games ran like dogshit on consoles and PC was missing a lot of multiplatform games.

Things aren't perfect but I'd say they are improving, kinda. Sure there's the woke and DEI shit, game's and hardware pricing are way too high imo but aside from that, what's the problem? I can play 99% of the games on my PC, and console bros finally have a platform were most games can be played at 60fps. Sounds like a net positive to me.

I hope you are wrong, but I fear you are right. If I had kids it would be harder to tolerate the higher pricetag. I can see many parents going for some cheaper option whatever that might be, maybe a PC handheld that's easier to pirate/emulate games on. It's already crazy expensive to deal with the rising living costs.

So you're saying that gaming is a great deal because it costs about the same as the 90s for games and console prices have gone up less than all of those other things. Thanks for proving our point!

The hardware side of gaming sucks for sure right now.
Expensive consoles that actually increase in price instead of going down (even half a decade after releasing). And super high GPU prices with low stocks and fictional MSRP make getting a decent PC more expensive than ever.

The software side has been great though. There are always more games coming out than I have the time to play.

To be honest Nintendo and Sony are doing great. Wii U situation? You're having a laugh.

Sonys first party situation is dire however they are the defacto gaming platform of choice for people that don't want a PC but want a moderately powerful box under their TV in order to play games.

Xbox is a total disaster though from a hardware and services perspective.

The issue is with people like you who just bend over and take it. Your like Abbey in the Last of us 2 just taking all they can give. Normally there is an increased value as prices increase. Products are worse with Quality control being a wide spread issue while they keep asking for more money. You can throw your money at it but I refuse. Keep taking it.

Is it me, or does it seem like the more PC-centric Gaf becomes, the more whiny?

Going by the poll in that PC vs consoles thread, ~63% of Gaf is on the PC side.
Gaf also has been non-stop whining for quite some time.

Or maybe it's just old men yelling at clouds.
I dunno, but it's pathetic. Lol

I realized that as well. I understand being frustrated about things. But drowning yourself in things that make you unhappy isn't going to make anything any better. At some point the straw breaks the camel's back and it really starts to affect you.

Also, regarding the GTA VI delay. Are you THAT surprised OP? The amount of money the previous game brought in, and continues to. The need to live up to expectations when all eyes are on you, etc. Does one more year really make that much of a difference?

So many people try to push this narrative that this generation hasn't been great, but it just tells me that you guys don't really play games.

Bangers keep coming out and people keep ignoring them and saying "there are no games." Complaining is a bigger hobby than gaming these days.

On the other hand, as prices increase, gaas/live service games offer a cheaper alternative with low entry-cost (a lot f2p) and continuous support/content drops, both free and paid, but mostly optional.

Red Dead 2 was 7 years ago. GTA5 was 6 years before that. So GTA6 is still on track.

Valid critiques, but good thing gaming doesnt revolve only around 5 specific companies so that none of these points really matter that much.

Finding good stuff to enjoy to engage with is incredibly easy, it sounds like you legitimately care about companies and have expectations from them, that is a road with only one eventual destination: disappointment

This industry needs another hard crash and reboot.
Never happening. The medium is too big/worldwide to fail. It would be like saying all movies or all books should stop releasing.

I'm going to start translating these types of posts as "I want western AAA pillars to fall" and at this point the industry will ultimately keep moving along regardless of if they live or die.

So very true.

Some people just really enjoy being mad, upset, frustrated, annoyed, etc. I guess.

And you forgot about this being one of the worst eras for PC ports. And UE5 being one of the worst game engines ever.

Top Bottom
