Nintendo Switch 2 |OT| Switch 2 Nintendo, because now we're playing with power

System just shut off due to overheating while the kids were playing MKW, docked with plenty of ventilation. Not feeling good about this.

Since the dock doesn't actively cool the switch, I would bet money on the issue beeing a firmware one where the switch 2 fan curve gets adjusted waaaaay to low in the dock. I've seen reports of this thing beeing extremely hot in dock and then once removed from the dock the fans start spinning like crazy....

it does seem to get a bit toasty for sure.
I didn't have an overheating issue yet tho.

I wonder if they need to crank the fan a bit higher

How can there be hope for improvements if there are no visible changes? What kind of logic is that?

Anyway, the joycons are definitely trash. It's still uncomfortable and feels like a fisher price toy. The analogy range is also terrible for fps. I tried playing a bit of Fortnite and Cyberpunk. It was difficult to aim at all with these joycons. 3rd party joycons >>>>>
They are trash, there's no two ways about it. I moaned earlier about the mushy feeling of the sticks, and checked my brothers, which is much the same. The vertical play (on the L3/R3 axis) makes them feel cheap, combined with the limited range, they are a huge let down on a system this price. We know Nintendo can make decent sticks, cause the pro controller is fine. The same applies to a lesser extent with the buttons, which are still too clicky, particularly the triggers.

I gave Switch 1 a pass cause it was cheap and novel, but the new machine is still let down a bit by the controls. It's a shame. They've gone backwards on certain aspects since the Wii U gamepad.

Playing BoTW SW2 upgrade for an hour now docked and it's hot but the system fan is definitely running and dumping heat. Dock is hot but I can't tell if it's fan is on.

Battery life seems fine, comparable to or better than my Steam Deck from what I can tell. I was just playing SF6 and Mario kart for 2 hours this morning and still had about 20% left. More people complaining to complain, lots of that with this launch from what I can see

Complaining about a console with a 2hour battery life ? The same console that the company advertised as having a battery life of 2.5 - 6 hours ? Where's the portability in that my good man ? Unless I have to carry a 10000mAh power bank with me all the time I can't see that working very well...

No one's expecting 7-8 hours out of this but 2 ?

Review of Kunitsu-gami: Path of the Goddess

Did anybody try the game before ? Is it any good ?

Played it on Game Pass and didn't care for it. I'm not really a tower defense fan and the combat was pretty basic. I only put in a few hours though.

Street fighter doesn't have HDR on any platform right? It's kinda assy and the image quality isn't the best in portable and docked, oh well

I have been playing Fantasy Life on Switch 2 and its fun which I'm surprised because I usually dont like Animal Crossing type games.

The game runs great and its damn good looking game.

I collect VHS tapes I collect VHS tapes

After further review, I'm returning this. It works with the dock, but it takes too much effort to get it in the right position. Feel like I'm forcing it and it should just drop right in.

Pics and link below. For a $20 case, it is ok. It is just a solid piece of plastic. The grips feel good. Much more secure in my hands. I don't care for the fact that the grip won't come off with the joycon. It is a bit of a pain in the ass to pry out the joycon. You have to pull the grip away from the joycon and then disconnect it. The grip gets in the way a bit during the process.

I do like that the casing does not get in the way of the kickstand. That is something to watch out for as some definitely prevent you from using it.

Debating on whether to keep it or try something else on amazon.....or just spring for the dbrand $60 killswitch. Honestly, the killswitch seem incredibly overpriced even though it probably the best quality grip on the market. Going to stick with this for a bit and maybe some review videos will pop up on Youtube.

they didn't, that was the Switch 1. the Switch 2 is advertised as 2h minimum

I stand corrected Kev but that half an hour of difference isn't what I'm talking about brother and you know it, now, unless EVERYONE online is a troll, a grifter and baiting for clicks, the low battery life thing of this console has been doing the rounds all over the internet, there's already enough articles, videos and forum/reddit posts about it now that the console is out in the wild and people are getting their hands on them.
This is not a good look any way you cut it and besides, it was the SAME thing with NS1 where they had to release the V2 (CN :Mariko) as to remedy that.

Where exactly do you disagree ? honest question btw.

cheers

Isn't battery life mostly depends on how demanding the game is? because I played Bravely Default on portable mode for good 3-4 hours.

I'm guessing games that more demanding will be different.

I think I'm starting to understand why they capped the play time during their events. The battery issue is real. I still like the system, but oof on the battery life.
The launch Switch had terrible battery life too. Woes of early adoption. They'll likely put out an improved version in a few months.

I don't disagree with anything. for me 2h is enough, for others it might not be.

it's just a data point, and it was communicated ahead of launch that 2h is what is to he expected when playing demanding games

It makes sense Danj and I sincerely hope so, having said that, we got screwed again, oh well...

I dont really take Switch outside my house so that not really much issue for me.

I bought Switch and Switch 2 because it has games I want, not for it portability.....but its nice to play games on my bed or backyard, especially in the summer.

Does the upgrade pack work with switch 1 cartridges or just digital ? Thinking of picking up a switch 1 copy today

I have not sat down for an extended play session with Bravely. I'll keep tabs on it today unplugged and update. I forgot how charming this game was.

I love Bravely series and I hope with this also bring Bravely Second to Switch 2 and announce Bravely 3.

Playing MKW again docked for a while, measured the heat and it peaked at 50c/122f at the vent.

No overheat warning yet.

This thread is a treasure trove of impressions and feedback for both hardware and games. After subtracting the salt and glaze posts it's been very informative so far, much more so then any "review". Keep it up!

A gym buddy got it and I got to mess around with it for an hour. Here it is next to the Switch OLED and Legion Go. I can share my honest opinions if anyone needs them …

Out of curiosity did you kept the plate on back of the dock after connecting the wires? I never put mine back.

Plus the screen protection issue (people not realizing you shouldn't remove the clear screen film) and poor packaging with some screens getting staple damage .... I might return my unit and wait for the OLED.

This is what I get for feeding into fomo
You're considering returning your own system because one idiot at Gamestop in NY stapled receipts to other people's boxes and some other ignorant people are removing a plastic film Nintendo told them not to remove, exactly the same as they said with the Switch OLED?

What is this about removing the film? The only thing I've seen about this is the thread I posted where Nintendo told customers not to remove it. The screens getting stapled was at one Gamestop. Not sure how these are "issues" that would make anyone return their SW2

No overheating for me yet, but I did tilt the system earlier while I was playing No Man's Sky and noticed that the air it was blowing on my face seemed pretty hot. This was before I read anything about overheating, so it was a random, unbiased impression. Don't remember the Switch 1 ever running hot.

Same as Steam Deck. Same as original Switch at release. If you're playing AAA games it can get 2.5 hours, so less demanding game dragging it to 6 seems possible? Not sure what the problem is.

I'm not getting surround sound on the Switch 2. The only output option for 5.1 is Linear PCM, but my Sonos system doesn't support that signal. That can't be right. There must be lots of people using Sonos. Is there a solution?
I am pretty sure Nintendo didn't license any proprietary formats, but your Sonos system should recognize it. Could be your TV or HDMI cable, what is your setup? I have an Arc SL, gen 3 Sub, and One SLs for surrounds plugged into an LG C1. I will test later, but I assure you I get 5.1 LPCM with my original Switch and you should here too.

Finally got around to testing my 5.1 and it 100% works with my Switch 2 (and previously worked with my Switch). I know most of this is really obvious, I don't think you're dumb just being detailed for completion's sake.

On the TV (LG C1):
  1. Your Arc/Beam/Ray should also be connected to the eArc HDMI port, make sure you're using the HDMI cable that came with it.
  2. Make you're using the HDMI cable that came with the Switch 2, connect this directly to your TV's HDMI port (needs to be HDMI 2.0 or higher).
  3. In the TV's audio settings, make sure:
  • Sound output is set to HDMI ARC device.
  • Ensure eARC support is enabled.
  • You may also have settings for individual HDMI audio inputs (Bitstream or PCM). Choose Bitstream. I use this for all my HDMI inputs.
  • There should be a Digital Sound Output option (Auto/PCM/Pass Through). Choose Pass Through.

In the Sonos app:
  1. Double check your System settings, you should see your home theater system properly showing up. It should include the surrounds and sub if you have one.
  2. Double check your Surrounds Audio and Sub Audio settings to ensure they are both enabled.

On the docked Switch 2:

Go to System Settings --> Audio and set:
  • Audio Output Source = Automatic
  • TV Sound = Linear PCM 5.1 Surround
Then scroll down to Test Output. You should see all your channels represented in the picture, and the test setting summary should look like this:

Output = TV
This TV's Audio Channels = 5.1 Surround
TV Output = Linear PCM 5.1 Surround

Select Play Test Audio. You should hear the L C, and R channels from each section of the soundbar, and the SL and SR channels from the respective surrounds. You'll hear the SW from the soundbar and subwoofer if you have one.

While the test is playing, the Sonos app should recognize the signal as Multichannel PCM 7.1.

I really didn't pay enough attention to this launch. I thought donkey king, Mario party and Kirby were launch titles. Picked up a non bundle system so I won't have anything to play for a few weeks.

System feels nice tho!

Anyone else noticed freakishly slow docked charging? Maybe it's because I'm playing at the same time but over an hour my system only increased charge by maybe %10. Did I get a defunct unit/battery or is this normal?

The charging is pretty terrible in general.

Nintendo needs to address the battery and charging problems.

Works for cartridges too. In fact, if you bought a physical Switch 2 Zelda BotW or TotK, it would just contain the Switch 1 cartridge and an upgrade code.

Do you have it set at "Stop charging around 90%"?

If so then it's going to slow down and stop around 85%-90%.
