Hidden Switch 2 Setting Fixes HDR Calibration

Its a good thing to take your time in the menus especially on a new console.

Set it to +5 clicks from the left for 200 nits, which is what you want for accuracy. Set to +9 its 300 nits so maybe go to that if your room is very bright, though perceived contrast and perhaps highlight detail will be negatively affected if you do.

its bad menu design.
I didnt notice that setting the first time, but hdr looked off so I looked around then found that setting.
 
I did indeed not see that option... that's some awful UI design lol.

gotta tinker with that for sure, because my mid tones are definitely way too high
 
Also, turning HDR Output to "Compatible Software Only" may help with some games that don't actually support HDR as some non HDR games colors may appear off with the system trying to force HDR onto them

This is the first thing I did when I set up my switch 2 and my colors and contrast have been fantastic. I even use auto hdr on non-hdr games, and most of the time it's an improvement.

Though I can see how some people might have missed this setting.
 
I thought there was an actual hidden menu... I literally was messing around HDR and just read the text saying you can't press Y to edit the brightness... Maybe it's hidden for the people that don't read, IDK

It's not so much as though it's "hidden" it's that the vast majority of casuals don't even understand these settings or how they may work in conjunction with their own TV settings.

Most people still have the preset display settings from when they initially bought their TVs and think the image looks "good enough".
 
its not hidden, just poorly explained. But yeah im definitely having trouble calibrating HDR properly with the Switch 2 and my LG CX. I'll give this a try
 
Hidden lol. Some people just need to read the stuff thats on screen sometimes :)

Im using it on +7 and it looks fantastic on my OLED
 
What a terrible UI for HDR. Ran the set up again and adjusted and now everything looks incredible.

Mario Kart looks as it should. Makes the games look so much better.

The only thing hidden about this option is the intent of the OP.

Learn to read and take time to scroll through your system settings.

I adjusted this about 18 min 37 seconds after I booted up my switch 2.
 
Just wanted to bump this are some people were incorrectly assuming that five clicks to the right was 200nits, but you have to remember that it depends on your TVs peak brightness capability, for example,

If you check Vincent's



As you can see, on his LG C3 it takes 7 clicks to reach HDR reference white 203 nits, the LG C3 is rated at 850 nits peak brightness, you'll also notice just after that he mentions that on a newer TV with a peak brightness of 1000 nits then 6 clicks would be HDR reference white, so it depends on your TV, I have an older LG B9 oled with a peak brightness of around 500nits so I found I needed to go to 9 clicks.
 
Calling this a hidden setting proves how incompetent people are when it comes to setting anything up. It's one of two steps.

I have an LG C1 OLED, and using HGIG, the sun in the right disappears after 70 clicks which is fine. For the second screen in the adjust brightness slider, Vincent recommends:
  • If you play on a bright room, you'd want 300 nits paper white, so the math for how many clicks in the second screen would be 10,000 ÷ MaxTML. So in this case my LG C1's MaxTML is 800 nits, so it's 10,000 ÷ 800 = 13 clicks.
  • If you play on medium bright room, you'd want 250 nits paper white, so the math for how many clicks in the second screen would be 8,000 ÷ MaxTML. So in this case my LG C1's MaxTML is 800 nits, so it's 8,000 ÷ 800 = 10 clicks.
  • If you play on reference level dark room, you'd want 200 nits paper white, so the math for how many clicks in the second screen would be 6,000 ÷ MaxTML. So in this case my LG C1's MaxTML is 800 nits, so it's 6,000 ÷ 800 = 8 clicks.
I'm using 8 clicks and it looks good.

I too have that TV and I love it, but I don't bother ever with HDR because I feel it's too complicated and rarely impresses me.

I have a Bravia OLED (XR A80K 65in) with peak brightness of 700 nits, and no HGIG setting so mine is a mystery i guess. I had the tone mapping setting in the tv set to gradation preferred, so i turned that off before re doing my Switch 2 settings again. First screen with the two suns was fine and i could easily get the one on the right to disappear while the left one is visible.

No clue what to do for the brightness slider.....i think right now i have it at 5 or 6 clicks

This shit is way too complicated

TLDR from my longer post

If you have LG C1/CX OLED:
- Enable HGIG
- first screen with the suns - 70 clicks up starting from bottom
- second screen with brightness - 8 clicks to the right starting all the way from the left.

Might vary slightly by display variance but these settings seem like the best guide so far for 800 nit LG OLEDs.

I have an LG OLED C9 (peak brightness at 700 nits) and have it at 7-8 clicks from the left.

+8. I have an LG C1 and find that +8 looks a tad better than +7. The correct setting would be +7.5, because that's the correct paper white for 800nits.
