What game are you currently playing?

Alone In The Dark

Just starting on this one. I like the puzzles and Adventure part fine but lord, this first combat level at the oil rig was bad and the combat and movement in general are unpleasant. So far it has 6/10 written all over it. Wish I liked this more because the very opening was impressive and it's been kind of getting less cool every time I play.

Are you using dodging and running? Do you not aim center mass and use melee weapons? Everything outside of environmental throwables works pretty smoothly for me. That section is pretty easy to just run past with the exception of the wooden gate.

That's a survival horror staple.

It's a blast. It feels new and old school at the same time. I'm having an absolute blast with it. The artstyle/visuals are helping.

No stupid fanboy shit here. It's legit fun and interesting. I thought it would have some woke stuff, but outside of choosing your pronouns, it's pretty a normal rpg affair.

Not really. Outside of story beats in the mansion there are very few. Try playing Silent Hill Origins and then you will know absurdity.

We must have very different definitions of "a few". Just because something is worse doesn't excuse the other. Alone in the Dark's narrative relocks doors you previously unlocked and kick down ladders to shortcuts you previously had access to. I'll pass on Origins after having played Homecoming a year or so ago.

Maybe I have a high tolerance from playing Adventure games but in AitD it serves to guide you to the next point of interest. It also has thematic and narrative relevance.

Still playing RE7, despite being not fan of first person view I'm enjoying this game mora than I thought the exploration of the house is very classic RE and really like it.

And despite having much more realistic and horror tone Ethan has cheesy one liner like your traditional RE games.....other than first person view this game is very much your classical RE game.

I grew up on Sierra adventure games. And funneling you is what all locked doors do in these games, but Alone in the Dark's implementation just isn't well thought out when you compare it to something like classic Resident Evil. My initial thoughts after completing Alone in the Dark is that it felt like the lead level design quit midway through the project and was replaced by someone else who had to pickup the pieces. I didn't like the game for a lot of reasons, but I still felt compelled to complete which is more than I can say for most games these days that I usually turn off after a half hour.

How far in are you? I loved the first hour of RE7. But once you get a gun, it all kind of went downhill for me.

Yea. I wasn't having trouble, it just plays like ass. Just overall it's hard to shake the bargain bin "RE2R template for dummies" feel of it all. It's an admirable try but four hours in, it's maybe a 6.5 for me tops. The best parts are the letters/books/lore and setting for me so far. I also turned off hints and whatever I could and she'll still randomly do the Naughty Dog talk to herself and give hints thing.

I'm currently dealing with mother and lot of bees and I got flame thrower and so far enjoying the game.

For me survival horror you need guns and weapons, I dont like horror games when you just have to run away.

With that being said those regular mold enemies are boring as fuck, such boring designs and encounters.

Them all being voiced is impressive, but they throw a ton of those at you too, sometimes two or three right beside each other in the same room.

Enemy variety is a problem. That's cleaned up in RE8. I just didn't like the tonal whiplash of the first hour versus what came after.

I have no issue with games forcing detours due to a narrative/environmental development. Maybe you do.

Shooting is more responsive in AitD and it has actual dodging/running and proper melee unlike RE2R. If AitD is a 6.5 then RE2R is a 6.0.

I get that, I'm gonna play RE8 as well once I'm done with RE7 but I hope they dont do same mistake when come enemy variety in RE9.

Enemy design is THE MOST important part of survival horror games.

RE8 has much better variety. It's kind of like RE7 and RE4 had a baby. It's nowhere near as good as RE4 (what is though?) but much better than RE7.

The mold people are some of the dumbest shit in a series full of harebrained decisions. Bought it Day 1 and when the game was over I was like...what the fuck is this?

The same fucking issue in RE Revelation had with their enemy designs.

These are not good designs for survival horror games, they fucking boring.

That sums it up well for me too. I just don't think the combat feels great in first person Resident Evil. And Capcom has never replicated the gun porn bliss that is RE4.
The RE4 tribute act parts of Village feel wimpy and just make me wanna play RE4 again instead. That game is like a classic band that goes on a "all the hits" tour with some lame new lineup that fucks up all the nuances of the songs.

I think RE2R had nice balance of feel good combat without being too much action, I like RE4 A LOT but that game is much more of action game more than survival horror.

I hope RE9 brings that balance back and I hope it has ACTUAL good 3rd person view.

I posted this in another thread, but for a series that has a few of my all time favorite games (RE2 and RE4, not to be confused with the remakes) I really don't like Resident Evil all that much. And after RE8, Dragon's Dogma 2 and Monster Hunter Wilds, my interest in Capcom has dwindled.

RE2:R is fine, I just prefer the original just like I prefer RE4 to its' remake. And I agree that RE4 is more of an action game, but it's one of the best fucking action games ever made. I replay it every year and it just never gets old.

I really like RE4 as well but I dont want that type of gameplay style of RE9 or future RE games because I want survival horror, not an action game.

RE8 is even better

I'm not as big of a fan of first person RE but RE8 is fantastic

The series has more often than not leaned more into action than survival horror and you might not enjoy 8 that much as it's mostly an action game beyond one early section and one of the later levels.

Sure compare to Silent Hill series RE always been more action horror game but I personally think RE2R found nice balance between action and survival horror.

Also despite RE4 being action game I still really enjoyed it, same thing might happen with RE8.

But I'm hoping RE9 would go towards between atmosphere of RE7 and gameplay of RE2R.

Using RE->RE2->RE3 and RE4->RE5->RE6 as trends, they usually increase the action in the given style before rebooting it to something different. That's a long winded saying of I don't share your hope.

I enjoyed majority of recent Capcom games including MHWilds which I know most people here don't like it.

I'm more optimistic that I'm gonna enjoy RE9…. Don't know about everybody else.

It has nothing to do with enjoyment, but more of caution to your hopes for it to be more survival horror focused and less action focused when the trend is usually the opposite.

Well for one in RE9 you play as a new character and she is not some kind of combat expert like Leon or Chris was.

So I'm hopeful.

Well, despite saying that I probably wouldn't immediately start Ori 2 after finishing Ori, I started Ori 2. I'm surprised how different this game is from the first in terms of mechanics and gameplay. I'm not sure how I feel about it yet, but I think I like it.
I tried to do that, at the end I stopped playing 2 and never went back, I should give it another try

Restarted BOTW on switch 2. Gave up on switch 1 after 15 hours. Let's hope the resolution and performance upgrades are enough to keep me interested this time and the game will finally click
