Microsoft has announced job cuts at Xbox Division

Xbox Third Party Portfolio - Sr. Content Planning Manager -

As someone who went through something similar to this when Gateway shit the bed, I feel bad for him and understand how he feels.

People on the inside -- the rank and file and even middle management -- usually keep their heads down and believe that things are going well, even as the higher ups know everything is falling down. They trust the higher ups' claims that everything will be just fine, and that they're doing everything they can to keep their head above water. Until it's too late.

If my job didn't have me interacting with the rest of the company on a daily basis (both call floor and manufacturing floor), I would have blindly believed corporate's statements too. But as I watched entire call center "pods" quit and not get replaced, or an entire shift on the manufacturing floor get axed, I realized their statements were full of crap and I better make my preparations. When they began trimming the actual IT staff, a lot of them were completely unprepared and flabbergasted that they were losing their jobs.

The hits keep coming I suppose

Poor Riky Riky , the tools will never arrive:

"It's a key team that focuses on ensuring quality across Xbox games, the platform, and developer tools."

They did their job bad. Now they will not to a job at all.
There is a lot of room to fall further, by Steam "average game in store" standards Redfall is fantastic game.

Those average Steam games are not made by or have the budget of Microsoft. Redfall was said to have reviewed internally two points higher than metacritic according to Phil Spencer. All I'm saying is that if this is that group then this is a good thing. I don't enjoy people being fired, but bad work is just bad work.

Doesn't matter what job someone is doing. People just need to be accountable. And if it means a bad job or giant waste of time and budget, then out you go.

Game studios should actually be lucky because whether they are on their own or under a big corporate umbrella, they'll get funded for years (salary) before shit hits the fan for evaluation and release. And even a bad game can get released where everyone keeps their job for at least those 5 years of dev.

In traditional roles like sales or marketing, all it takes is someone missing their sales targets missing by -2% and that can be enough to get fired where the VP of Sales wants someone new to take over. Or a brand loses market share by -2%, and the VP of Marketing freaks out and fires the brand manager because it looks bad the brand dropped from #2 to #3 in Circana data charts (Circana is the rebranded name of AC Nielsen). All this can be done in 1 year of performance. Some roles you got to be firing on all cylinders from day one where everyone is evaluating your performance metrics every month as opposed to working on a gaming project for 5 years.

Longtime listener, first time caller. How does Halo Studios fit into what's happened today? I assume their next project (rumored H1 remake?) is do or die for them at this point after the long list of failure? I'll hang up and listen.
For any dev in a western studio who is under MS, any project is do or die for them. Any. If you think you're working on a sacred cow, you're wrong.

As for Halo Studios, i'm honestly not entirely convinced that game ever ships. Thats not me speaking on the quality of the project, mind you, just more speaking to the publishing reality MS is faced with; they own Call of Duty, the FPS IP that basically took over Halo's entire presence in the FPS market genre as the years ticked by. As far as market impact, Halo has not had a large market hit in a long time, and the studio has faced nothing but turmoil since 4 shipped. I feel like you can pick basically any year since 2018 and say that was the worst year for Halo as an IP and you'd be on the money for the most part. Despite folks always thinking budgets somehow don't exist for Xbox, they always have, and when you have Call of Duty, which is more a production pipeline than it is a game, a pipeline which requires ever-increasing investment in order to be maintained, while Halo hasn't come close to sniffing that level of RoI, you eventually are gonna have to make a decision on which one has a future and which one doesn't.

Even if this new Halo project ships - it would need to recapture a market in a way that I just haven't seen occur since maybe Doom 2016, with the added bonus that Halo's success is really not measured by the quality of its SP campaigns, and more about its presence as an online MP shooter, so it can't even stand out in the way that Doom 2016 did (focusing on a solid campaign), cause even if its the best Halo campaign thats ever been produced, if the online MP doesn't catch on, then thats basically a wrap.

MS throughout the years but particularly since Bungie walked, has always been open to the idea of just licensing out Halo as an IP for others to develop should they have a strong enough pitch for it. We almost got a major Halo release that wasn't helmed by then-343i not even a couple of years ago. Mind you, Halo Studios got impacted today despite both wanting to ship a title next year, a title that is being made on an engine they've never shipped on (Unreal), and now with the added bonus of having to ship on more platforms than you ever have before. From the outside looking in, Halo Studios is being setup to fail. You wouldn't ever cut resources at a marquee team that is, on paper, within 16 months of shipping. Thats just a recipe for disaster.

And to think, these layoffs are only the beginning for where they're heading.

Head in sand folks will still claim another console is coming despite all evidence proving otherwise.

Another console is coming I have no idea why you guys keep trying to push this. Its been confirmed by way to many people now just move on with this nonsense.

Do you have any idea what happened to the preview program for updates/feature changes/improvements?

For example an update to the achievements system has long been requested by a fair number in the program but never materialised despite Jason Ronald saying in late 2021 it was a high priority. He's been radio silent on it ever since.

Did they basically cut back on these things, the updates we get now are minuscule changes at best.

Sarah Bond recently confirmed a PC was coming, there has been no mention of an actual console yet, unless you include the misrepresentation of the word.

Until we se an actual announcement paired with hardware, treat everything with a grain of salt. Microsoft as a corpo does not care and will pivot on a dime.

this is probably how it feels at MS/Xbox:

I just wonder if now, finally, these so-called "pundits, experts, analysts" are going to stop their bullshit of constantly trying to do damage control and spin everything. In a way, these layoffs feel way worse than the previous ones and the drama around the business combined.... are we going to see a different PR dynamic now? i don't think Phil or Sarah can go making interviews (with these people) laugh, make jokes and be "excited" for the future.

You often state it as "console", which does make me question if you truely believe in an actual console coming. 🤔
A console is coming and likely also OEM pc style "consoles"

Multiple skus are coming

Can the entire Xbox hardware team get axed tomorrow and the whole thing scrapped?

Maybe but my bet is no

The contingency plan for projects that are making it out the other end of this is to supplement the loss of manpower & experience by training management of all levels on proper applications of CoPilot/ChatGPT. Videos on how to prompt LLMs for assets and new potential workflows are being produced as we speak.

In layman's terms: the expectation is the surviving projects will come out on time tables, now at lower budget levels, and at quality levels that were established before the cuts.

Also - this is not the last round of layoffs for XGS by a long shot.

Oh no. This will be terrible!

Do you have a source with a direct quote? I've heard the words "next generation", but not "next console". The information we have seen lines up behind the idea that they're pivoting to PC gaming and hope to eventually have some emulators that will run existing console games on PC hardware.

If they've ever directly said they are making a new console, I'd like to read it.

Xbox used the word console as does AMD in their video

I usually don't care when Tech companies do mass layoffs because it always happens. However, when those same companies do layoffs and at the same time request thousands of H-B1 visas to replace them its a big fucking problem. Fuck you MS

I wouldn't use the term 'cut'; they've had a 'reconfiguration of priorities as market factors continued to shift and coalesce'.

In 2021, all efforts were done in the service of hopefully making Xbox one of the best performing home console ecosystems by any metric. It can't be stated enough how much has changed since then.

I expect any effort on this front likely gets rolled into the efforts to create an XboxOS wrapper for WindowsOS in the future, if it still exists. It could just as well have gotten shit canned today.

Appreciate the response, thanks 👍

Xbox have said a lot of things publicly in the last few years.

For the traditional console throw me in the "I'll believe it when I see it" camp.
So you think AMD is lying too and not building the chips she just said?

Its cool if you do, just asking

Are you expecting this console to run native console games and not be able to run PC software?

Some words from our Uncle Phil

Today we are sharing decisions that will impact colleagues across our organization. To position Gaming for enduring success and allow us to focus on strategic growth areas, we will end or decrease work in certain areas of the business and follow Microsoft's lead in removing layers of management to increase agility and effectiveness. Out of respect for those impacted today, the specifics of today's notifications and any organizational shifts will be shared by your team leaders in the coming days.

I recognize that these changes come at a time when we have more players, games, and gaming hours than ever before. Our platform, hardware, and game roadmap have never looked stronger. The success we're seeing currently is based on tough decisions we've made previously. We must make choices now for continued success in future years and a key part of that strategy is the discipline to prioritize the strongest opportunities. We will protect what is thriving and concentrate effort on areas with the greatest potential, while delivering on the expectations the company has for our business. This focused approach means we can deliver exceptional games and experiences for players for generations to come.

Prioritizing our opportunities is essential, but that does not lessen the significance of this moment. Simply put, we would not be where we are today without the time, energy, and creativity of those whose roles are impacted. These decisions are not a reflection of the talent, creativity, and dedication of the people involved. Our momentum is not accidental—it is the result of years of dedicated effort from our teams.

HR is working directly with impacted employees to provide severance plan benefits (aligned with local laws), including pay, healthcare coverage, and job placement resources to support their transition. Employees whose roles were eliminated are encouraged to explore open positions across Microsoft Gaming, where their applications will be given priority review.

He is such a titanic cunt.

Side topic: Long time ago when my older bro had a dog his fav food was possibly..... bread. The second he heard someone crinkling the plastic bag in the kitchen he'd run in. And he'd jump up the counter best he could with paws and snout right at the open bag. He was never this hyper for other food. lol

Halo on PS might not happen now

Because Halo/Xbox continue to drag their damn feet on this
If it was in the works, or ever does happen, it'll be like a wet fart. I really think the Halo brand is so tarnished at this point, that most people don't care about it anymore. It certainly isn't big among anyone under a certain age.
