Let's talk about game mods

Have you played any interesting mods lately? Or would you like to share information about any cool upcoming mods that look promising?

I created this thread because people rarely discuss mods on gaming sites and I usually only find information about interesting mods by chance, so I have a feeling that I missed many interesting mods.

I will start first by mention the promising Quake II mod called Call of the Void. Quake games are among my favourite games of all time, and this mod attempts to combine the atmospheres of Quake 1 and 2.

Duke Nukem Forever Restoration Project. Thanks to this mod we may finally see a true Duke Nukem Forever we all deserved in early 2000s.

Fallout Bakersfield - What happens when you mix doom with fallout? This mod is very promising.

Half Life 2 RTX - many people may find this mod interesting since Value may work on HL3 ;). A little warning though, this mod can melt even the RTX5090.

Natural Vision Enhanced - Everybody played GTA5, but how many played it with GTA6 graphics ;).

Also I want to share my favorite mods:

Alien Eradication: This mod offers a horror like atmosphere reminiscent of the Alien films, as well as quite long levels. If you're a fan of the Xenomorphs (films or games), it's definitely worth playing.

Blade Of Agony - WWII shooter inspired by games like medal of honor and wolfenstein. It has an engaging campaign that will keep you hooked until the very end.

Brutal Doom needs no recommendation, but maybe some younger gamers still havent played it

Half Life 2 cinematic mod - it started as simple graphics mod for HL2, but now it completely overhauls Half-Life 2 and it's episodes.

Arcane Dimensions — This large-scale single player campaign for quake 1 includes many high-quality levels for Quake 1 and slightly improves the gameplay.

GTA Project Reborn / Definitive Edition Project - GTA trilogy is one of the best games I have ever played, but PC ports were missing many features and graphics effects. This mod pack for GTA 3 / VC / SA restores all of that and adds modern gamepad controls. Forged crappy "Definitive Editions" released by rockstar, because they totally lost the atmosphere of the original GTA3 trilogy.

This mod pack is difficult to find now. However, if you read the Reddit discussion below, you might find an active link.

Honestly, the only mods I fuck around with at this point are for the Fallout games. Pretty sure the last mod I loved deeply before that was Action Quake 2

Mods are great. They were SO much better back in the day, but it's still so cool to see modding exist these days. Especially when the mods feel VERY much like what we used to see 20+ years ago.

I just saw the post about Call of the Void the other day, super excited about that. Same with the DNF Restoration Project. Also you reminded me about the Alien mod, thanks for that!

Man, Action Quake 2 was so good. I played it frequently. Gloom as well. Shit, and Jailbreak, Rocket Arena 2, Rail Arena, etc. There were so many good mods for Quake 2, lol.

I love me a good Mario World Kaizo romhack.

There was also a great mod for Super Metroid that modernized the controls so they were more similar to Zero Mission. Makes that game even better, to be honest.

There's also a great mod that removes Baby Mario's crying from Yoshi's Island. An absolute must-have.

Pretty much worthless outside of things that fix otherwise broken games.

I don't have enough time in the day to play something made by a team of amateurs, or to fiddle with all the graphical mods in Skyrim just so it can look like something it wasn't intended to be.

Nude mods for every Gooner on GAF. You know who you fuckers are.
Whats wrong with nude mods? Can we not agree that everyone can play his games like he wants?

I use quite a lot of mods for lots of games. Mostly QoL things. But its crazy what these modder dudes are doing....they are adding so much value to games its not even funny anymore. 🙏

Just worried what happens to places like NexusMods with their extremely one side censoring politics. Thank god people seems to realize now that there are also alternative sites where you can host mods.

Mod that replaces BG1&2 portraits with 90s anime style ones.

Great for the weebs like me

I mostly just do model swaps or outfit mods these days. And while I'm certainly a perv, nude mods don't interest me except to give a good base model for new outfits to work on since you might be missing parts of the body mesh on default models. I'll also go for some QoL mods like removing excessive or obnoxious particle effects.

Honestly there's just a consistent flow of new and interesting games to play that I don't really mess with larger scale mods or overhauls anymore.

I love pretty much every mod in here so far except that Baldur's Gate mod to replace the incredible original art with weeb shit, but hey, I'm glad it exists for the weebs who want it lol.

Not big into mods, but there was a time when I played the Fallout mod (wasteland halflife), Action quake and the then new-fangled Counterstrike mod.

Using a LORA trained with Ryoko Kui's style, Dungeon Meshi/Delicious in Dungeon. Well worth reading.

I think the mod I'm most looking forward to would be the Fallout Bakersfield mod, which I believe is a GZ Doom overhaul. It looks pretty incredible in my opinion.

Oh yeah, when talking about mods, let's not forget there were people who looked at Doom and thought "this could make a great sonic game".

Then 20+ years later they have a Sonic Kart Racer with more content than Mario Kart 8 Deluxe

I had about roughly 40 mods running in Witcher 3: Complete Edition

You could fit all of it onto a PlayStation Memory Card for the lulz.

One even fixed the janky ass movement during combat.

Thanks for the info poodaddy poodaddy , I never heard about it, but this mod looks very interesting. Thanks for sharing info about it.

Absolutely brethren, it does look outstanding. This is easily the game I'm more hyped for than anything. I just hope the RPG elements aren't watered down or removed in any capacity. I want it to be Fallout 1 in all its glory, just in first person, and I'm hoping that's what it will be.

Mods aren't just bug fixes or graphic swaps, though they can be those things too. You have crazy ambitious total conversions like Enderal for Skyrim or Anbennar for EUIV. These are completely new games and the scale of them can be crazy.

These are pretty good, though I like the default portraits just fine. I remember using a mod that replaced the combat barks with a variety of (very poorly sampled) movie quotes.
Still hearing Pinhead say "We'll tear your soul apart!" when combat starts was always rad.

People like him make their conclusions, and a conclusion that asinine implies they're unlikely to ever understand another point of view, no matter how wrong they are.

You're right, of course, but I wouldn't waste my time.

Highly recommend this if you've extracted all the fun from vanilla MGSV like me

Fuckin outstanding recommendation here, that mod gives MGSV a hell of a shot in the ass.

How could filthy amateurs fix games made by professionals. You should just play the game the way it was intended to be.

Been playing through Dragon Quest XI using this mod, and it's quite nice having the high res assets of the original game running in the "S" version that was originally ported from the Switch. Makes it kind of the best of both worlds and probably the actually definitive way to play the game.

"The Call of the Void" mod for Quake II has been released, and it's great fun! It has quality of an official expansion.

Another mod worth mentioning is Fusion FX for GTA IV. It's essentially an unofficial patch that incorporates many graphics improvements from the console version and much more.

If changing the resolution in the game doesnt work, simply add these parameters to the Steam launch options.

Always on games with mods. The best games of all times are always modable like Fallout games, Elder Scroll games, Warcraft 3/Reforged, and old school Half Life and Half Life 2.

Recently been playing a lot of extremely well made Custom Campaigns on Warcraft Reforged. Waiting for Skyoblivion and Skywind.

Time invested : added enjoyment ratio isn't good enough to warrant most the time.

Usually takes at least an hour to get the mods set up completely, and the pay out is generally "meh" and isn't even generally a seemless experience most the time.

I get how people could enjoy it, but I think as I get older I just can't be asked to fuck around with it.

I love mods. Mods, source ports and fangames are the reason I prefer PC.

With the right game (ie games with good mod support) - not to mention, mods and fan patches can fix some downright busted games.

On top of that, I consider optiscaler to be a mod as well.

I don't like it when games cannibalize mod ideas for expansions to the base game.

People mentioned portraits for Baldur's Gate, but the best mod ever made was the one that imported the entire BG1 into BG2's updated engine. Required both games to be installed (which at the time meant the better part of your HDD) and isn't needed anymore thanks to the EE, but being able to play through BG1 again in a higher res, with kits and new classes, was a blast.

My only experience with mods has been on steamdeck but I don't know what I'm doing they never work for me. I tried no loading doors in Remake and it doesn't work. Tried fixed camera for RE2 remake and no dice.

Linux usually needs a touch extra (like launch commands/arguments) but it shouldn't be that much of a wall, hopefully someone experienced can help

Isn't that the mod by the weird guy that modelled a uterus on female characters and put in a shit ton of tree models that ruin landscape views?

it was just the cervix iirc

As an old ass gamer, modding when I was a teenager was the majority of my game time.

IF you had half-life, then you have an infinite of new games each week in terms of mods.

Counter strike
Day of defeat
Gangster Wars
Goldeneye

A shit ton of other mods I cannot remember the names of.

Also used a shit ton of mods and mutations for unreal tournament.

And then custom skins. Ran with Beavis and Butt-Head in quake 2 and horny reaper from dungeon Keeper in quake 3.

Back when gaming was fun. Sadly mødding died alot with half-life 2.
