Teardown of PS5 Slim revision

Going back and forth on your base console's storage is just stupid and penny pinching no matter how you look at it.

And a friendly reminder that some of the storage space are reserved to the Playstation 5 OS, so you'll end up with even less storage.

But hey, at least SIE CEO Nishino confirmed that PlayStation 5 is the most profitable generation ever.

[usable space]

667GB on new model
848GB on old model

Older model has 27% more storage. New models also has 3 nand chips while older model has two...

I swear, when I see the title, my mind only get it as the game Teardown. And I was like "Why the hell this game should have a specific slim revision??"

It's the same as the OG PS5, which launched with 825GB and has the same usable space as the new model.

OG PS5 = 825GB
PS5 Slim = 1TB
PS5 Slim revision = 825GB

3nm cost more....so makes a lot of sense.
Not quite, 3nm will be about 20% cheaper by late 2026/ early 2027. If they moved to 4nm right now, they'd save between 10-15% per wafer compared to the current 6nm die. Might also allow for a smaller, even lighter form factor which would save Sony on shipping as well.

TSMC doesn't reduce wafer prices anymore

So it uses the older 12-channel SSD controller instead of the newer 8-channel one. What a wacky choice to have completely different PCBs just to make this model.

When Sony originally launched the PS5 did they not say that they went with 825GB because of some specific reason related to the channels? That it meant faster speeds or something?

I remember thinking it sounded like total bullshit just to save money over going with 1TB.

The lower size is a function of the wide controller. The original 12-channel controller (so this one) uses 6 chips (each chip is 2-channels). Each of these NAND chips is 1Tbit in size (128GB). So they end up with 128GB * 6 = 768GB of storage. The next step up would've been to use 2Tbit chips, so 1536GB.

But the newer controller in the Slim 1TB and Pro is 8-channel, and uses more modern denser and faster NAND chips. So it's 4 chips with 2Tbit (256GB) = 1024GB and 4Tbit chips in the Pro.

Going back to using 1Tbit NAND chips again is pretty weird because they not really in production anymore because no one really makes a new SSD with below 1TB. Maybe Sony got some deal on new old stock that was rotting away in some warehouse.

Found it:

Alll matte looks so much better.

Can't believe someone at playstation thought having the cover half matte and half gloss was a good idea.

I guess the only silver lining to this is the alternative is price increases. Of course, I wouldn't put it past Sony to do both at some point.

Hardly a big deal compared to other nonsense we are ok with.
Its a revision- we should be more appalled by current pricing across the board.

- Matte is great
- I can still survive with 600GB + 1TB SATA SSD for PS4 games and NVME's is so cheap now anyway. Ridiculous non the less!
- Biggest disappointment is there is still no die shrinkage which would have lead to less power consumption.
- Interesting new hopefully improved quieter fan. All plastic means less pesky vibrations hopefully
All solid points and yes I agree Matte is much better than the gloss finish.

But the best thing about PS3 gen is that it got much cheaper AND they constantly increased HDD sizes.

It went from 60GB to 500GB.

What was even better was the fact that you could replace the HDD entirely with a larger one you bought yourself. My PS3 has a 1 TB sata SSD in it right now. Back before companies started soldering shit to motherboards.

That thing was 12GB in PAL regions though.

There was this ultra cheap version with NAND storage. You could still put HDD into it. And it even couldn't play some PS3 games because they required more than was available.

Another SKU of super slim had 500GB HDD.

PS5 Pro is a much better deal at this point

You get much better hardware AND more than 2x the Storage for what? 250 dollars more?

If you add more storage to the base model you are nearly there

Can't stand this shill.
He's genuinely disgusting and puts out incredibly low effort garbage videos. ("We paid $100 for TEMU shit and they sent us shit! Come look at the shit!")
I used the [Don't recommend channel] option on his videos a few times now when I've seen them in the Recommended section.
