yes. Read the post, I explained why it's combat is overdesigned which isn't the case in Paper Mario. Used that one as example because it's more or less similar with the button inputs during a turn based combat.
Paper Mario is a bit extreme example, it errs on other side in a lot of games.

As for CO E33 being over designed, I think they toned it down and simplified too much. By adding parry.

Turn based games to me comes together when there are a ton of permutation combinations, so that long term strategy can be made.

I think its below best turn based titles that have similar complexity, but are perfectly balanced in their encounters so they feel challenging. No matter what strategy player pursue.

One area where CO is head and shoulders above other games in genre, (especially JRPGs, they can be unbelievably lazy), is UI design. Everything is clearly marked even during battle. So you can change on the fly without having to memorise a ton of obscure stuff.

My mistake for being lazy, sorry. I was mostly talking about the first two games in the series which imo are the real good ones.

Yeah it's like there's a ton of mechanics in place that don't really matter because of that.

Yup, exactly. I only played through act 1, but during that segment all battles played exactly the same for me, as I guessed that was the best strategy available. Different enemies only changed how to parry them, but not how to attack them, and imo that's the biggest mistake they made.

You should check out SMT if you haven't already. Playing on Hard, the party composition you make is half the battle.

KCD2 is my pick. I would love to see FFT got it but let's be serious a bit ;) I'm hoping that UE5 will be better than the engine but like FFT, it's a niche game. Heck, even KCD2, I'm not sure. Clair Obscur got a better reach I think.

The answer is obvious and it's not even close. Death stranding 2 could have been a contender and it was good but just didn't resonate the same as the first.

I have played a bit of SMT 4. Was very impressed by how each running into a boss was like a wall and I had to catch new demons to make a new party, based on their weakness.

As for CO, its combat does get mildly strategic halfway through. Cause enemies start dishing a lot of damage and player has to end battles quickly. And you get access to a lot of new pictos.

In first act, I was also pretty disappointed. It does get better.

There's a lot of great games this year, but no clear frontrunner for me. Every major game as some major asterisks next to it's name, except for maybe Split Fiction, Death Stranding, and Bananza. Those are probably my top 3.

I refuse to accept that E33 is GOTY worth. It is great, but it is completely rizz-less. It's not even the best JRPG from the last couple of years (Metaphor is so much better IMO)

It appears death stranding 2 but goty focus' in hard RPGs that cost a lot of money to make, I want to see outer worlds 2 win game of the year.

No offence but to save the gaming industry in the upcoming future, Expedition 33 should and must win the GOTY, its an award yes but we owe this game a huge recognition, this game came from nowhere and set the boundaries for how should a single player game introduces itself in a unique way yet its known

Silksong is a continuous if a brilliant game
Death stranding 2 is .. is a weird game , yes this guy has weird brilliant ideas but to me DS is not a GOTY game, I respect the developer behind it, but this year we need to not destroy this beautiful canvas's soul , not yet we need embrace it to give the dev team behind it a boost of knowing that they deserve it and we want more of this quality in gaming

Kingdom Come 2, what an incredible game. Honorable mentions to Abiotic Factor and Trails in the Sky 1st.

We all know what's winning but I wonder if expedition 33 could have provided GTA 6 a challenge had they released in the same year
