Here’s why Dark Souls is the greatest game ever made

Because I was scared to death of it. Had it at launch in 2011 on 360

It sucked. Scared me. Intimidated me.

Around 2018 or so. The remaster came.

I gave it a go. It consumed me. Still does.

It's not hard. Not scary. It's beautiful

That's quite the dissertation on one of the greatest games of all time, well done 👏

I sat down with a buddy mine the other day to finally come up with our personal top 20 games of all time. We've both been gaming since the Atari 2600 through every generation, never stopped. Of course everyone has gaps - it's impossible to play everything - but it was interesting to see where our lists had similarities and how they differed. My top 20 was dominated by Square, Kojima and FROM, Dark Souls was on the list 👌 (he has yet to experience the glory that is Soulsborne)

Having said that, I always found it silly to claim any one single title is the "greatest", no such thing whether it's a videogame/movie/song/book etc unless your exposure to the given medium is extremely limited.

It's not. It's just clunky combat, cryptic nonsense passed off as "depth" and endless trial and error masquerading as good design. People only call it "greatest game ever made" because suffering through jank gave them stockholm syndrome.

I imported Japanese Demon's from PlayAsia back on release. That was my first experience of this pretty much new genre, and before it started to catch on in the west. First half or Dark Souls was fantastic, but I still prefer Demon's.

There isn't a single bad entry. Even DS 2 is great. If I were to rank them all, it would go something like...

Demon's > DS1 (first half) > Sekiro > Bloodborne > DS3 > DS2 > DS1 (second half) > Elden Ring.

Not even close, the second half is an unfinished mess.

It's not even the best game made by FromSoftware. That easily goes to Sekiro.

Yeah, this. I've been gaming since '87 and find it impossible to even come up with lifetime top 10. There are just so many flavors and completely different reasons different games are amazing... I kina value some games for their importance and impact they had on me at the given moment, how they changed my taste... There will always be that first blind playthrough of Bloodborne, but is it really the best soulslike ever?

Top 10 is impossible which is why we did a top 20 lol. Even then we both made some tough sacrifices to narrow down our lists, it was a fun exercise though 😆

I believe, that the ONLY people who don't absolutely love it are the ones who bounced off cause they couldn't gitgud. That happened to me twice with Demon Souls back in '09. I came back and tried a third time and am a lifelong fan of everything Souls.
