Microsoft revamps Xbox Game Pass plans and hikes Ultimate to $29.99 a month, Ultimate gets Ubisoft+ Classics and more

So who's left to pretend this is the best deal in gaming?

I love that this news broke and their website broke from so many requests to cancel Gamepass. Just bring more classics to PS5 so you can make money.

Haha this asshole is too much.

I hope the game pass subscriber base doesn't swing the midterms!!

Everyone knows people vote on:
- Price of milk, bread and eggs
- Price of gas
- Price of their premium digital game content subscription

He should be grateful for all the electricity this is going to save.

It's in the article

Ok, thanks. Sounds like the way forward, for now, unless there is another way popping up to stack Ultimate cheaper. The subscription numbers are going to drop dramatically because of all this. All I hear among friends using the service is that it's over now. Everybody says they'll either cancel a regular sub or won't stay subbing once the stacked sub ends.

Pretty sure PC game pass still gets day 1 games.
Yea I saw that. I mean it's still a good price for PC Gamepass. I cancelled anyway. Not necessarily because of PC Gamepass' price increase, but moreso because Microsoft for the past 6 months has been slappin' the shit out of its users in various ways.

You could say I stand in solidarity with any gamers who are getting shafted right now. If I had a Playstation and a PS+ account, I would do the same when PS5 Pro's price was released.

Although to be honest, it's crazy Xbox and Nintendo are out-arrogancing Sony right now.

Get what you can from the dwindling membership base. Business 101. Until it's gone. Makes perfect sense.

I also love how they sent Sara Bond out there the day before to soften the blow and take the hit. She is being set up to be the fall girl. Microsoft thinks her gender and race somehow will make the news better for those impacted. Such a political puppet.

This is the play anywhere and everything is an XBOX Tax. GTFO Microsoft. More mismanaged than Sega.

I've been talking about this in some other thread lately, but Microsoft really needed a compelling value proposition that isn't "not Playstation, but cheaper", that way they'd cultivate their own userbase and be able to charge them as they pleased, just like the other two.

I think this is their actual biggest failing in over 20 years in the console industry. Not Xbox One or whatever.
It's a solid observation. I've asked a similar question: if someone were to say "I'm an Xbox fan" in 2025, what does that actually mean? I don't think there's an answer, and yeah, that's gonna be Microsoft's biggest problem if they're pushing Game Pass into irrelevance to try and go head to head against Sony one last time.

What date will the price go up? I will try to play through some of the games I have through gamepass before I cancel.

Edit...

I've just clicked on their website and it's actually £22.99 up from £14.99 so it's not quite as bad as I expected £30.

I'll still very likley quit the service but I can cope with £22.99 for a month or two whilst finally try some of the random games I download from them.

And....that's why I don't subscribe to anything, renting games for an ever increasing hole in my pocket over time is just stupid.

Well, this is probably the end of the road for my ultimate subscription, will change to PC and basically won't use my xbox much anymore other than subscribing every once in a while to play a queue of games for a month. I'd actually been switching more to steam lately. I've been an xbox owner since the original, subscribed to xbox live like nov 17, 2002. Finally found a way to somewhat alienate me, lol.

I don't mind that they raised the price, just that they raised the price so much after having just raised it not too long ago. That and they don't have a family plan like all other services, Netflix I can share with my family, this I have to get separate stuff for all accounts which is whack.

...But now it's time to ponder how Xbox will finally cease to exist:

a: We will wake up one day with the announcement of Xbox is no longer with us?
b: Will Xbox/ABK/ZeniMax be sold off to different publishers, or spun off as independent companies?
c: Will Phil get away with his master plan to leave Xbox through the front door as a "visionary", "President of Gamers", and self-proclaimed savior of gaming… just for MS to kill xbox a few months later?
d: Will the AI push and evergreen games will make Xbox something akin to a gameloft?
e: Xbox will still try to be a massive publisher with a platform, but will flounder at every step of the way (subpar games, delays, cancellations, more ridiculous price hikes, massive layoffs, talent exodus, IP destruction) green soldiers enduring betrayal, mockery, and ridicule by the entire internet, as it's been happening. and Phil will get what he deserves… to be fired from Xbox, leaving through the back door?

The Xbox demise has to be decisive and categorical, with no room for spin or revisionism. This is why it's necessary for Xbox pundits, influencers, and shills to reach a breaking point and be so broken that they will have no choice but to accept and evangelize reality and facts (for once), forced to exhume the rotten truths they've tried to hide for over a decade.

I think they are trying to re-train Xbox users to buy games again.

Good luck with that.
I'm never buying a game on their PC online store. Hell no!

Steam isn't perfect, but they've earned my trust. Microsoft has broken my trust way too many times.

If they ever pull their games from Steam, then we know they're truly trying to self destruct and exit the business.

Clearly the profitable service they don't release subscriber numbers for is doing so well that they just can't stop increasing the prices for more revenue.
Doesn't mean that you can't make it even more profitable. In the end of the day - "when everyone pays, we* all win".

I think we are way past that brother.

There is another option: you'll see PlayStation unchecked with rampant hardware prices and a PS Plus price increase… maybe as soon as next week. This is how you'll know Xbox is dead.

I mean, they are porting the most successful game from the last, what… two years, to Xbox because they see Xbox as an irrelevant platform, which doesn't make sense, but whatever. In terms of Sony rising prices, well, PS actually needs to sell their shit to be around.

They are porting a GaaS game because it's their strategy and they stated so. They also have that baseball game for ages there and that meant nothing. If they've consider Xbox the competition or a competition even, they wouldn't have priced the Pro like that. We are witnessing the acts of a company with no competition and, as always, is very ugly. I'll never forgive Spencer for bringing worse Sony back.

again, arrogant Sony can be back but they still they need to sell their shit. right?

let's see if the PS6 is $1000USD. then we can talk

My Gamepass expired four days ago, first time I've lapsed in paying for an Xbox online account in over fifteen years. I honestly, truly don't feel like I'm missing shit, and I kind of wonder why it took me so long to get rid of it. Got rid of PS Plus a couple months ago too. Only thing I still pay for now is Nintendo since PC is free, and the only reason I pay for the Nintendo account is so my daughter can play the hell out of her beloved Splatoon 3. I've cancelled all streaming services too except Netflix, and I think I'll be cancelling that soon.

It's honestly freeing.

It amazes me since Sony got into the console business. How much they have benefited from their competition absolutely making poor choices. Even the PS3, which started with arrogant Sony, ended with humble desperate renewed Sony. Microsoft had them on the ropes, then chased the WII crowd. N64 cartridges, Sega self imploding and not using DVD, now Microsoft self imploding.

I know they say you need to be lucky too be good, but it'd ridiculous. USA console companies can't seem to keep up with Japan. Atari, 3D0 and now whatever Microsoft is.

Personally I think we can ALL blame Ass of Can Whooping for this one with his 10000 straight months of sub cancel without pay

I have to admit it's ironic that we have two game pass threads one where everyone is saying that there is no way that game pass is profitable and that MS are therefore subsidizing subscribers and another where everyone is complaining about MS ripping off subscribers.

It's not a rip-off per se in the sense that no investment was made in what you are getting, it's just a poor value at a sustainable price, and impossible to sustain at the low prices they had. They're both true.

I am SO fucking happy about this! Profitable my fucking ass. All of you who jumped onto this bullshit and thought you were getting a great deal can now understand why so many of us on here have been saying for a while that not only was this bad for gaming but also unsustainable! A trillion+ dollar company can't afford to give you "free" games EVEN after they claim it is profitable?! Laughable. Fuck gamepass and I hope it fails even harder now.
Never understood celebrating failure.

I think the gaming landscape needs a few companies keeping things in balance. If Xbox taps out, I'm pretty confident we'll see some price hikes at the other channels. Plus- a good motivator to make a better product is competition.

I hope everybody involved in the leadership for this company learns some valuable lessons here. 360 was an amazing time.

Ubisoft+….classics and Fortnite crap. Gee thanks, totally worth the price increase. I think it's time to sell my series x.

Edit: I would consider it worth if it was full on Ubisoft+, not just old stuff.

I know people fear this but Xbox has not been keeping Sony in check. It is Xbox that has been paving the way for digital only and price increases in both hardware and subscriptions. They have given Sony the greenlight.

The price of everything is increasing, but I wouldn't rush to pin a sub price hike on the President, especially because we're talking about Microsoft with a service we didn't believe was solvent to begin with.

Takes away from how witty he usually is.
