Microsoft revamps Xbox Game Pass plans and hikes Ultimate to $29.99 a month, Ultimate gets Ubisoft+ Classics and more

I can never tell what is sarcasm anymore…
I just chalk it up as over fluoridation, hopped up on processed foods, Tylenol in the womb, and rock bottom testing standards.

Idiocracy, basically.

This model seems weird to me for casuals but even hardcore gamers can only play so many games.

Edit this reminds me I read once that attachment rates for a console is something like 20-30 games.

Apparently can find 3 months codes at shady places making Ultimate cost roughly $15/month.
Still pushing it over the edge where you have to really think if it's worth it. At standard price it's just absurd imo. Personally I think this week will more or less sink the service.

I'm not alone. And you know it's true, which is why you and others aren't responding to any of the points I made.

Steam is the only answer. What's the point of a game subscription service that you pour hundreds of dollars in each year and when you cancel that sub you've got zilch for all that money.

Buy a game on Steam and its yours forever.

The best option is just to buy games - whether it's Steam, PSN, physical, Nintendo's store, Xbox's store, etc. I could understand the benefits of Game Pass when it was cheap, but it was always going to go this route - unreasonably expensive with reduced options across the board.

That something I just can't stand about MS. I have Windows 10 and they always find a way to advertise Game Pass to me. I have switched off every option relating to it and disabled Xbox and related programs - and it still happens occasionally. I heard ads are even worse with Windows 11. I would be so angry if I turned on my console and there was a full-page ad. MS has this attitude about their customers and their consumer rights that I just can't tolerate - hindering a person's experience in order to advertise to them is sign of that outlook. It makes me glad I stayed away from their gaming hardware and much more interested in Linux.

Gamefly is a better deal now if you want to rent imho. I just checked the pricing and it is better than console gamepass with more options and better games for sure. Former gamepass enjoyers who have access may want to check out gamefly.

Yeah, gamepass is obsolete at this price. Better to use a rental service and have access to any game, rather than pay that much for Microsofts shitty selection of games.

I guess this is their way of trying to spur games sales again to appease publishers and even their bigger studios. Users that would normally buy 1-3 games a year at full retail prices are not going to now pay them $30 a month and they know this. So they lose those people, but likely get back those 1-3 retail buys, while still retaining those that still sees GamePass as a better alternative than buying like 5 or more games a year at near or at full retail prices.

That said, I'm done with GamePass on PC even though I locked in for a bit. I knew hikes were likely coming so as of late I shifted to buying some games on Steam like Silksong so my saves would not be trapped behind the GamePass paywall when I finally cancel due to those hikes.
They are going to lose customers, it's not as simple as going from GP to straight buying on xbox. Their fans won't have confidence in them as a platform holder and will migrate over to PS/PC.

Sure you might be able to find those codes until they are all sold out. Then you will be back at the $30 price and back at no longer being able to access those games after canceling the service. It's better to cut your losses sooner rather than later.

Never understood celebrating failure.

I think the gaming landscape needs a few companies keeping things in balance. If Xbox taps out, I'm pretty confident we'll see some price hikes at the other channels. Plus- a good motivator to make a better product is competition.

I hope everybody involved in the leadership for this company learns some valuable lessons here. 360 was an amazing time.
I'm celebrating the failure of a subscription service at the hands of a 3 trillion dollar company! Excuse me for laughing in the face of a company who is as greedy as any others around. Besides, the old model was working fine (buying your products over renting them) so I am sorry if that offends you, but the failure of these assholes gives me great joy. I personally never wanted this sub service to begin with. Once it started I never wanted to see it succeed. The fact that people are now starting to jump off in seemingly large numbers and deciding to buy games gives me even greater joy.

And yes, the 360 was the pinnacle of gaming and also the beginning of the downfall of gaming.

I don't see why this is so hard to understand! You don't NEED every fucking game on day 1. Buy 1 game, play it till completion then buy another game and maybe by that stage it'll be cheaper! Buying games shows devs we WANT more of what they're making and they make more money to produce more games! Stop lining the pockets of Microsoft by not owning anything you play!

Wait until the holidays and they are probably half off. Or sometimes Target has a buy 2 get 1 free.

Yeah it's either stack up as far as possible with shady codes, NOW, or cancel.

I think standard Ultimate price is too much even for just one month. Think about it, if you do it for a big release at $30 you need to finish the game within a month, which is difficult for me, and afterwards you'll own nothing. The equation is not working anymore for me.

At $15?… Mmmyeah I could do that if I'm convinced the games output will be good.
2026 could be good with Gears and Fable but they need to ramp up and do 3rd party deals to not have any down periods with this price.

Btw, Klobrille usually defend everything. Go through his list…

This cut has gone deep among the biggest fans.

Seeing a lot of folks on twitter wondering if Microsoft is going to reverse course on their changes. I don't see it happening. Does anyone think Microsoft didn't know they were going to get slammed for this?

I have been excited about the streamlined version of Windows coming to gaming but I now realize this is the kind of behavior that is coming with it. 😢
Same here and I have an Ally X preordered, in many ways because I want easy access to the GP library.
Only problem, my cheap GP sub ends in December…
😕

I'm considering just canceling the preorder and stick with an old Steam Deck until Steam Deck 2 comes out.

Psst… assofcan had a way to get GP free. By refunding over and over. Does that still work? Can your account be banned?
Asking for a friend!

It's so bad on twitter I wouldn't be surprised if they did take a step back honestly. I don't think they will though because I think this is a move that needs to be made. The message seems pretty clear they are no longer trying to grow xbox or the brand at all. They are trying to milk as many of their users for as much as they can or they just want you to leave and go buy their games on your new ecosystem.

They have to do it. They're reaching Stadia levels of negativity. A business update video next week with tweaked pricing and day 1 games in the Premium tier would be a good way forward.

It might depend on whether these changes are coming from Phil Spencer or Satya Nadella. Spencer has been known to fold, but if it is Nadella......I don't think he gives a shit.

I would be shocked if they did, but you are not wrong. The damage to the brand right now is pretty massive.

To what end? "We're listening and we hear you" is a line they've used numerous times over the last couple of years they've screwed up something.

"Only 4 games" to basically multiplatform, two price hikes in the same year, Game Pass price hikes, layoffs, cancelations, studio closures, the list goes on.

You can't expect your customers to continually build you a bridge if seemingly your only answer is to constantly fuck up and burn it, apologize, and ask for them to build you another one "just one more time".
