No, seriously, how would you salvage XBox?

Imagine you get a call from Satya. He's seen your posts and decided you're the one who could turn Microsoft's gaming division around. How would you go about it?

It's been 20 years, the brand is tired.
I swear by Baal I won't buy anything related to Xbox, cause I know no rabbit will come out of that hat.

Xbox is making their hardware/software PC exclusively moving forward. They are going to sell pricey hardware that has an UI that mimics the console experience. I believe this UI will not be available to traditional PCs, as we see with this BETA release everyone is installing. That will be what separates their hardware offering from just buying a Desktop PC or Laptop. This hardware will not be subsidized. It may also offer some backwards compatibility for older Xbox console games. They fully intend to sell their games on Nintendo and Playstation. Those hardware will be the midrange offerings to get access to their software moving forward.

The reality is that Xbox has no actual identity.

Yeah, they own some big studios now, but Xbox as a brand means nothing anymore. The things that people associated with Xbox are no longer relevant and haven't been for years.

They had a stretch of like 3-4 years where they had an identity built around Gears, Halo, etc. but that was about it. It's been in shambles since the latter half of the 360 generation.

Sure, they technically own Bethesda and COD, but when ESVI comes out are people going to say "wow, look at this new game from Xbox"? Doubtful. Those things will remain associated with the studios that actually created them.

Xbox as a brand could cease to exist tomorrow, with MS continuing to technically publish those games, and no one would blink. They're not leaving some great legacy behind like Sega did and in comparison they'll be a footnote to the industry.

Tig ole bitties on every female character going forward. All men would have big dick energy. No more gaas horshshit. Cancel those games. Make Halo, Fable, Gears of War with the original main characters and va. No partners. No friends. Cod becomes a futuristic boomer shooter with 1 online mode and no store. Merit based casting. Social messaging banned. Exclusives back. Gamepiss canceled. Next Xbox is a traditional console with no steam. Cod exclusive to Xbox. TES, fallout exclusive. No pc port. Sell or close studios in California, NY, Chicago, fire any QA/HR dedicated to dei. Shit thunder and piss lightning.

no way

It's easy to say it's doomed. OP is asking how would you save it. At least what would be YOUR plan.

I think it needs to be a multi pronged realignment of things:
-First and foremost games
-Second, value
-Third, gaining back trust
-Fourth being ok with being second or third place but remaining profitable and celebrated

In that regard Phil has always been wrong: Games do bring the players/buyers.

Back pedaling gamepass and the acquisitions isn't an option. Instead have a humble presentation where in the middle or near end you announce you were incorrect in your gamepass approach to market.

From here announce gamepass ultimate will provide day one exclusives for Xbox only players for the first 30 days, then on PC as well. PC is $5-$10 cheaper because of this.

Next we no longer bring Xbox games to ps5 or Nintendo until 5 years after release, and not all of them.

The core titles are Xbox only : call of duty being one of them. COD will be same day and date on Xbox and pc but ps5 no longer gets it. Yes major initial revenue loss and piss off people but the CoD bots will come and get Xboxes in due time with bundles or upgrade to pc. Or at least a 30 day start for Xbox and pc only.

Elder scrolls, fallout, gears, forza are Xbox and pc only but again not on gamepass right away for pc folks.

——

Now gamepass is a value for Xbox owners, and there is proper competition and value to own a Xbox. Bethesda catalog, Xbox catalog, and more not coming elsewhere.

Consoles sold at a minor loss year one. Hardware that surpasses the pro and no more entry grade Xbox series S to gimp for.

Fire the woke tards and the money sinks.

Appeal to the bros and chads. Halo gears need to be AAA 90+ meta bangers.

Rebrand and go back to the basic ( disk based console with lots of single player games ) OR just let it die and focus on PC and third party.

Not really sure how they're going to do it. The whole point of them pivoting towards PC, gamepass and cloud streaming in the background...is you offer a ton of value up front until you accrue a huge userbase, and then enshittify it gradually over time.

Instead, they enshittified before they could even rebound being the value-oriented option, raised the price of their console, and are going to release $600 and $1000 handhelds in a market where Valve has literally kept Steam Deck prices static this entire time.

All they really have left is somehow release banger games one after another to justify the increase, but good luck.

Sell Acti/Blizz for 69 billion and 1 dollars. :messenger_squinting_tongue:

Option 1. If I was going to stay in hardware. Stop roleplaying Pinky and the Brain thinking you have to take over the (gaming) world to be successful. End the everything is an Xbox campaign immediately. I would kick it off with the announcement of a budget friendly hybrid console that says this is an Xbox. THE ONLY XBOX. I would have an optional docking station that would significantly increase performance for those that want it with a combined target price/performance that would match the PS6. I would not kill Game Pass but it would not be a focus.

Option 2. Shutdown hardware and go all in on software. Let Phil retire and bring in someone that can direct software output and quality a little better. Focus on becoming the best third-party publisher in the industry. I would still kill the Everything is an Xbox campaign. It is messy and indicates a lack of focus. Game Pass would still be an option but not the focus.

Fire the current leadership team, hire an experienced leader who isn't a Microsoft lifer, end game pass, kill hardware, and spin it off into a game development and publishing house.

In the end it's ironic. Any success Microsoft has in consoles going forward, Sony gets 30% of it. They have no choice if they remain as a third party console publisher. That must just eat away at them, considering they freaked out over having to pay for DVD in Xbox360, which they refused to do.

Not sure you can salvage anything, the trust and bridges burnt. Everything has been exposed. The real question is what does people outside of the NeoGaf bubble think and know?

I could see them selling parts and IP's especially after EA's buyout. Maybe they can get most their money back on Activision?

I rather someone salvage Sega, at least people loved Sega.

Put a stranglehold on devs. Make them make games millions of people want to play not whatever they feel like making. No more trips to Iceland to photograph rocks for a game about being a depressed scizophrenic.

Xbox Series S for $180 with 6 months of Game Pass Ultimate included. Xbox Series X for $360 with a year of Game Pass Ultimate included. Hope people don't cancel.

- name it Xbox 2

- release games on Xbox 2 console first, and then 2 years after on PC

- reboot Halo, Forza, Gears of War, Blue Dragon, Lost Odyssey, Kameo, and some other games from 2000s, and focus on evolving, and nurturing them

- introduce some completely new stealth, fighting, JRPG, and platform IPs

- anime game, or two also wouldn't hurt

As much as I love the original console and game lineup, that was a product of the people working there at the time. Xbox as a brand never moved on from Halo. If they had it their way, Kinect would be the most popular living room accessory in the country and they'd be swimming in dough from the evergreen fitness game market. There was never a cohesive vision since Microsoft has been so chaotic with the handling of the project.

Disconnect it entirely from Microsoft (ew).

Move it to Japan.

Far away from the west. Take the spot Playstation left behind.

Change their wonky-titted controller back to normal. Or maybe give it the N64 controller layout for the lolz + nostalgia buy.

Change it's name to "Tenga Egg Box".

Announce no digital gaming anymore allowed, physical only - maybe even carts.

Drop my price back to $59.99 for software

Profit 🔥

Microsoft had the right idea when purchasing studios. They should just have ensured that those studios made actually good games, and shouldn't make those games multiplatform before at least 24 months. There's value in exclusivity, ask Nintendo.

Reset button. Fire the whole top brass. Fire known non producers (ie. whoever missed Halo Series launch and other similar fuck ups). Kill game pass. Build a new console. Call it "Xbox 720" and leverage 360 nostalgia in design. Build a killer EXCLUSIVE launch lineup with all these studios they own. Price console at a loss. Make up with first wave of titles. Undercut industry standard game price by 10 USD.

Basically build a fucking game console and stop being fucking morons.

Can't do anything. It used to have an excellent subscription service for a low price but most consumers rejected it.

Rug pull and go back to exclusives. People will be mad at first but people are already mad. Every game that isn't Call of Duty or Minecraft is Xbox/PC only. Launch the next console for $100 less than the next PlayStation. Sell your games for $60 on Xbox and $70 on PC. Moneyhat a couple third party exclusives again too.

Seems like it'd be hard to change momentum at this point but they should lean hard into the "best deal in gaming" shit because at least that bought them some goodwill compared to now where every move appears like they're gouging their shrinking base. Terrible optics.
