Elon Musk reveals plan to create fully AI-generated video game

Nintendo could also bank on that to stay valuable.

Nintendo will be only one unaffected as they are the ones who create new and fun gameplay.

They will also sue the crap out of everyone who AI generates a game similar to theirs because that's what will happen since they have so many 10+ million sellers.

But you guys are looking at this the wrong way.

AI will be used in a Roblox fashion for users to generate whatever kind of game they wants d then share that with others. Just a ton of mediocre to horrible user generate games is the future.

Fuck that despicable creature.

With that said, the topic of AI generated media is an interesting one.

I'm having tons of fun with Suno these days (not for fame or money of course, I'm not delusional..). So i can see people having fun generating their own games when that becomes possible.

...But it's still not the same as uniquely created art.

This tech moves much faster than video game culture war drama, I think that's the most critical thing to take away from this.

Devs stuck in culture slop will be caught in the tsunami.

My advice is to become as sarcastically based as possible, lean on shit machines are bad at. Adapt ASAP. Explore ideas of going indie, hand made games, if you're in AA/AAA currently.

Your executives still have enough rapidly growing disdain for you that they'll gladly replace you with machines, though. Consequences of video game culture war slop comes from the top, not below. They'll solve this problem suddenly and totally, it won't be a trickle.

The desired outcome is AAA without people and their bullshit ruining production, marketing and business.

I totally can imagine how games in the style of Telltale and Quantic Dream stuff, story heavy, choice driven and less skill based precise moves and controls without much required interaction with the geometry and enemies can be made via AI soonish. Anything that many gamers don't count as proper games anyway. I guess gamifying novels and movie scripts could be very fast and deliver some interesting results.

Based on most of his timelines I expect "We'll release a great AI game next year" will translate to "We'll release a crappy AI game by 2032"

Its going to fail because making games isn't a tech "problem" to be solved, its a creative thing.

The best case scenario is that using AI accelerates existing asset production pipelines, but just having access to shit-ton of assets doesn't mean you have a game worth a damn, and as history has shown just throwing money at a project (which is functionally the same effect) simply isn't a silver-bullet.

Ultimately there are a bunch of questions to be answered: Firstly how much will taking this approach expedite the process ? Then there's the subjective matter of the material quality of the end product ? And lastly there's the big question of how the audience will respond to an AI generated video game ?

I mean, if the metric of success is just something presentable done quickly its a lower bar to meet, than something that fits that criteria but also genuinely excites people by representing something new.

If the end result is cookie-cutter slop, will anyone really give a damn that it took less time/money to make ? Because it surely isn't the way to grow a business, let alone expand a creative artform.

Huh? Most people are against ai trash

Even folks here
most people are in theory agaisnt trash in any form, but I doubt most are against anyone or anything selling them a good or good enough product. As long as AI is easily identifyable as AI it gets called out, and laughed at, but a lot has gotten to a point no one could tell and its integration and level of polish will just grow every day.

I mean all AI actually does is badly imitate existing art.. and that's all modern game studios seem to be doing lately so it could only be better.

Musk also promised FSD 10 years ago.

He's just trying to raise money. AI could do his job these days. Probably is AI. Just promise the world a year or two from now. And then string everyone for as many years and decades as you can get away with before moving on to a new promise.

The dude doesn't know anything about video games and it shows, just like his stupid attempt to advertise himself as a gamer.

How is he supposed to make an Agentic AI that vibe codes a game that doesn't crash your OS in 10 minutes?

Generative AI is already destroying the internet, let's leave it out of our favorite entertainment industry.

Not for any content longer than 10 seconds tho

When A.I vids first started on youtube, it was real bad and while it's still far from perfect, they at least have gotten better and more advance just looking at the countless A.I videos about making a movie or turning a game into a movie etc. And just like them, the starting A.I games will be very bad but eventually we should get some pretty decent ones once the animation and jank gets ironed out.

It's the future. The first game might not be great but they'll improve. Thankfully Musk has good gaming tastes (Elden Ring, Diablo IV).

Like every Musk projects did before?
I agree, I am in hyper loop created by his Tunneling company riding in the Cybercab! Oh wait.

Musk fails quite a bit, it's just his hits have been .. sizable.

People in this thread that can't see that in not in a far distant future, AAA games will be 90% AI generated (well, all games for that mater) need a reality check.
The day that a small team of 20 people replaces a team with 200 is not that far.
You will not be able to distinguish between an AI game and a "normal" game.
Any type of game...

Not that AI will be used to generate a complete game, that's obvious as probably so many thought about the possibility. But that this is news somehow, that EM is news worthy, that saddens me a bit.

No, because it will be devoid of any talent, artists, human creation, its just the skin of a game.

This will likely fail as it's too early, but still excited to what xAI could come up with, in a few years time gen AI will at least allow individuals to use AI and make simple games, be it from the AI app itself or able to make a simple game in game engine with gen AI code. Soon enough most game devs, especially the western ones will be gamers' biggest enemies because they will do whatever it takes to stop this from happening.
