Am I the only one that uses L1 to sprint?

If I'm playing a game that requires L3 to sprint I go into system settings and change it to L1. My theory is that using L3 to sprint is what ruins controllers. That and L1 just feels better.

Definitely an L1 guy myself. Was strange when games started to offer it. Took a while to adjust, but I can't go back, and hate when some games still rely on L3. The Dualsense thumbsticks don't feel good to click. Too short and tight. It wasn't so bad on taller sticks like the Dualshock 3 where you could actually feel it.

Circle also works good for me. I do that with all the RE Remakes. Crouching for stealth games on R2 is also preferable.

I don't even check if a game offers a different option. I just change it at a system level.

I do this on pc. I use DS4Windows anyway so it is a simple enough thing to change. I forgot that you can manually remap on PS5. Or was it just PS4 ? I can't remember now.

Not a fan of using L3, but I'm so used to it that I don't really care. Agree that it feels weird for the controller, though.

Just replayed The Last of Us Remastered on PS5 and realized how nice it feels to sprint with L1 instead of L3.

I'm usually too lazy to mess with the control settings though 😅

Button mapping is part of the devs vision for a game, and since a game is its devs baby, what you are doing op is equal to baby molestation.
FBI and chirs hansen have been notified, so just take a sit over there and wait until we arrive with the tv crew.

Using l&r3 for anything but the most basic of click on or off functions ends up been shit. It's why I got a back button for PS4 so I could map that sprint stuff to a proper useable button. I do same on switch too as I have a controller with back paddles as well I hate having to click on and hold the l3 to sprint while trying to move it's a poor design choice.

L3 and R3 are painful buttons to hit. The only reason companies like them is because they are hidden by the control stick so in terms of visual controller complexity they are "free". Console companies don't want to add more buttons to a controller because it makes it intimidating.

Imho L3/R3 were never good for anything other than something you rarely need in a game. So putting sprint there is definitely a dumb choice.
Because I am lazy I have yet never changed the default control scheme though.
I wonder why the fuck we even ever need a sprint button. Isn't that supposed to be the job of the analog stick? Press a little forward, walk, press fully forward, run? At best even in various levels. Why do almost all games use it only for direction and not speeds?
The Dualsense thumbsticks don't feel good to click. Too short and tight. It wasn't so bad on taller sticks like the Dualshock 3 where you could actually feel it.

The Dualshock3 had at least a proper rounded surface, which can be pressed decently in neutral and at max angles. I have no idea who thought that new "thinner" design is better. Almost like they added a small edgy rim onto an anorexic Vita stick. Overall DS4 and Dualsense are better shapes, but they f-ed up the stick (and somehow also battery life).

Pressing the analogue sticks in definitely creates wear and tear and especially stick drift, after my third dual sense suffered stick drift, I just started remapping the button to a bumper - and this is happening with casual gaming, I can't even imagine how bad it must be for people that play something like COD daily...

All new joypads are completely shit when it comes to this, dualsense has it, Xbox controller has it and same with the switch joycons, this has literally been the worst generation when it comes to stick drift.

To answer the OP's question though, I prefer using the R1 since I find it to be more natural since I got introduced to it by both the last of us part 2 and Resident evil 4 remake.

They really, REALLY need to put HAL/TMR sticks in the next generation of joypads 'cause this has literally become a farce...

PS: on the switch/switch 2 You can at least easily use third party joypads with HAL or TMR sticks, no such luck though on the Xbox and especially the PlayStation.

Most games I've played once you press the L3 and unpress, you can then just keep the stick in the direction you're going and you still keep sprinting. This way the button isn't always held down.

I could consider L1, but then have to find another parry button which is what I am currently used to.

This is easier on your hands long-term given it's a repetitive action you do constantly. It's just easier to move/steer without engaging a shoulder/trigger on the same side at all times. Of course, it also means your right hand can't do a different trigger action while running now, like shooting...this is where back paddles become useful to copy buttons

I like LS press to trigger sprint. It feels natural with Xbox controller and saves extra inputs. I like to have LB available for more important things.

P.S. Sticks on Dualshock 4 are garbage and I almost never used L3 on it despite experiencing drift. People blaming stick press are barking up the wrong tree.

Go tell that to people that play COD daily - almost all posts are about stick drift due to the L3 abuse - something which makes sense since the whole potentiometer mechanism is fragile by design.
Dirt/grime/dust that gets accumulated under the thumb grips/caps gets pushed inside and seep through the sensors each time you press on the analogue stick - and this happens even when you take care of your joypad by cleaning it frequently.

It's just shitty/old design by default and this is why nowadays people insist on TMR or HAL effect sticks, funny thing is, I only started experiencing stick drift during the Xbox OneX/XSX and the PS5 era, antiquated mechanism + absolutely shitty Quality control = guaranteed stick drift

Depends if it's click to sprint or hold to sprint. If it's click then I'm fine with it on LS but if it's hold then I'll probably move it, or map it to a back paddle.

I have had no noticeable stick drift despite using it on Xbox Series controller almost daily for 5 years. Considering prices for modern controllers they ought to at least have better build quality on the Nintendo and Sony side.

L3 to sprint should be banned, it ruins controller. ;/

In every single game I always remap sprint to one of the additional back buttons of gamepad/Steam deck.
On Kb+m, I bind it to one of the additional side mouse button.

See, for some reason, it's a TOTAL crapshoot :

- The DS that came with my phat PS5 lasted me 1.5 years with no problems whatsoever until I sold it.

- The black DS that I bought a few months after started developing stick drift 1 year later.

- The DS that came with my PS5 Pro, lasted me a WHOLE 2 MONTHS getting both stick drift AND also completely dying on me (wouldn't turn on anymore).

- The replacement that I got lasted me a WHOLE 5 MONTHS before developing - you guessed it - left stick drift.

Let's see how long this will last and also the volcanic red one which I got from Amazon 4 months ago.

And before anyone accuses me of the usual "You're abusing your hardware" trope, I don't have pets, I always wash my hands before grabbing one, I always take good care of all my stuff and clean them weekly, it's just that the QC for these things have taken a nose dive these past 5+ years for some reason, never ever have I had so many problems with previous gen controllers (OG Xbox/X360/PS2/PS3/PS4).

At this point, there's surely some planned obsolescence involved.

I do not like L3 to sprint but will put up with it for certain games. There just isn't a comfortable alternative for some FPS, particularly Hunt Showdown, that I've found.

I prefer L1 to sprint big time. Use it in all TPS etc. if I can. I also often prefer hold to sprint instead of toggle but again, depends on the game. Returnal was sprint always on for example.

I always use default settings in games.

Can't stand too many options, especially graphics. A gaming device should remain a gaming device, not some audio mixer with 125 toggles.
