Outer Worlds 2: massive team layoffs coming on release day [Debunked]

Making me very sad to see the end of Xbox (and it's studios). Have wonderful memories of the 360.
Even the 360 went to shit eventually, when Microsoft gave up on the Japanese market again and redirected all those resources into a desperate attempt to grab some of that Wii money with Kinect. The first few years of the 360 were genuinely incredible, but that Xbox hasn't existed in over 15 years. There's nothing left to miss at this point.

Sadly, not surprising. Ninja Theory, warm up, you are next.
I have a feeling they may be already gone. Strange how they did not say a word or have been mentioned publicly (as far as I know) since the launch of Hellblade 2. Perhaps Phil is just waiting for the right moment. He needs to space the axing rampage I guess. LOL!!!
R.I.P Ninja theory if true.

At this point, no one even knows if the game is a success of not, if it's profitable, and Microsoft is already destroying people's jobs.
What a piece of shit of a company, run by sociopaths.
Has similar Steam numbers to Ninja Gaiden 4.

Both are also on Game Pass day 1 if I'm not mistaken. Worse numbers than the first game.

The Game Pass numbers need to be extremely high to offset the lower Steam players count. That or the game's budget must be low. If it had something like 30-40K, that'd be more nebulous, but less than 10K on Steam suggests a flop on PC. PS5 and Game Pass have to carry it hard, because we know Xbox ain't.

Edit: The game is still in early access. Never mind that post.

Those are the $100 early access sales mind you. Regular release is on the 29th. Numbers should be higher, but I'm not sure by how much.

I don't think Steam is a good benchmark for success of console games. For GaS, online FPS, RPGs, or Diablo-type games, okay. For the rest, I don't see it.

Almost 10K for the "stupid edition" isn't bad. There should be a lot more regular users I would think, but we'll know final numbers by next weekend.

As far as layoffs, I would not be surprised to see them eventually but this is way too early. MS doesn't want the sort of publicity that would come with dropping DLC plans and more.

And really, while Obsidian makes GamePass slop now days, they are quite efficient slop makers so it wouldn't make sense to target them first amongst other a lot less productive studios.

I still don't understand how MS didn't mandate more Fallout from Obsidian vs waiting forever on Bethesda.

those are pretty good numbers for an early access premium edition. looks like it should surpass first game after actual release.

I'm guessing Microsoft respects Todd enough that he can still call the shots at Bethesda. Or maybe that was part of the takeover deal? Not saying that is what going on, but just a theory.

Ah, thought it had the full release already. Never mind then.

Outer Worlds isn't a "console" game. It's just a game. And while Steam numbers aren't the be all and end all of metrics for gauging success, if a game is a flop there, there's almost no chance it isn't a flop everywhere else.

Considering the output from Bethesda (not very good) and the price paid, that would be weird, but we know Phil isn't very good at studio management.

So basically, we are back at square one. What a fucking joke.

The biggest complaints against Xbox were they just release those three tentpole games. Gears, halo and Forza. So big Phil goes out to buy loads of studios to broaden the portfolio and then they just close all the studios and go back to those tentpole games?

What an embarrassment.
In the 360 era these tentpole games were good enough, plus compared to PS3 their development for multiplatform was far easier and their online infrastructure was superior.

They made a grave error with the Xbox One and have been desperately scrambling to find a new way to differentiate themselves since.

The truth is they lost a lot of normies in 2013 and they never came back.

It's a shame, I look at my dead friends list occasionally on the Xbox app and think of the great memories. It's been dead for 10 years as well.

Imagine being such an evil and stupid person to made up stuff like that because you don't like a company

The Microsoft hate is unreal, peoples so want Xbox to go out of existence (because less competition is a win?) that the kickstarter darling that every gamers loved to support, obsidian, is now in the basket of hate because of Microsoft.

Remember the stack of shit that was layered on Avowed at release? I was shocked when YOU, papi Gonzito Gonzito gave it a try. Perfect game? Absolutely not, but nowhere near down as the internet made it seem to be.

Now the campaign is against Outer words 2, the next target of grifters I assume. Be it because they think obsidian is woke or against Microsoft it doesn't matter, it's pathetic.

Consoles are like sport teams now, nonsense tribalism, quite a lot of parallels with the state of politics.

I really like outer worlds 2 but duty comes before personal satisfaction. Nothing personal.

There's PC gamepass, battle.net also. Steam CCU tracking for these games has been a blood sport favorite of this place but I don't think it has much relevance as you say.

The rare times a PC gamepass had success in CCUs was when a 7 year in the waiting sequel with a huge fan base was released, Stalker 2. The kind of fan base who are still modding the over 2 decades old game to play it yearly, they're it interested in renting a sequel.

I'm thankful for the employees that this seems to not be true. But Microsoft still needs to crack the whip and get these guys working on a new Fallout game under Josh Sawyer.

"Let the teams do what they want!" blah blah blah don't care - if their games don't sell, there quickly won't be a team left. Everyone is now working to that ridiculous 30% profit margin imposed by the higher ups and giving studios free reign on so-called passion projects isn't going to cut it.

At least let there be a balance. As Martin Scorsese said about working with studios, it's "one for them, one for me".

I don't think it's motivated much by Microsoft hate per se, other than in the sense that Obsidian used to enjoy the benefit of being the plucky underdog, which is no longer possible.

Personally my animus is motivated by their decision not to fire Matt Hansen.

Tbh, after Pillars of Eternity 2 (their last great game imho) they lost me as a player, they're not making games for me anymore.

Hopefully they'll find a new place in case they need to, just like every other studio MS bought and can close in the coming months.

this isn't true. It feasibly can't be true. You can't layoff your whole team right when you might need them the most if issues crop up.

People are so desperate to believe this that they believe that MS would give everyone a weeks notice that they will likely be fired. Or that some kindly manager would put his career in his mind to leak it to his employees.

One dude?

Imagine not playing games because hundreds of peoples in credits can't make a mistake

Cancel culture is back?!🤔

Did Matt Hansen work on Outer Worlds 2? No? So you'll play it right?

Company makes games.
Dude that works a company makes a public, extremely racist statement.
Companies does nothing in response.
I stop giving that company my money.

At least for me, it's that simple.

If you have another reasoning as to why I should give my money to a company that condones racism then I'd love to hear it.

"Reminder to Black artists out there who are looking for portfolio reviews or job advice: my DMs are open, and you will always have my priority.
We got too many crusty white dudes in this field, please let me help you replace me one day - I want to go back to living in the woods."

WOW totally racist

Just not the usual kind of racism you wanted, right?

Yeah, totally racist indeed. Racist against both white people (he's putting them on the side and giving them less priority while calling all them "crusty") and also racist against black people, has he clearly sees himself like the saviour of the black race because oh, there's no way those poor black people are going to get a job without his help, right?

I'm not giving a cent to Obsidian and if possible Microsoft ever again. Don't think I'll be missing much if anything at all.

He himself says he's a crusty white dude, self-deprecating humour, have you heard of it? No?

There's was decades of inequality in this industry dude, laughable "we're all equal and got fair chances" when it's a sea of white peoples at developer conferences.

2% globally, clearly the black peoples had a fair chance /s

There's no illegal practices, an art director doesn't hire, he wants to help with their portfolios. Why the fuck not.

Would be cool to have a conversation without resorting to condescending shit like this but you do you man.

So what you say is that companies should hire based on skin color in order to reach that equity. Fuck merits and talent, right? And then you wonder why so many studios are putting out trash games and closing their doors. Mistery!

There's no illegal practices, an art director doesn't hire, he wants to help with their portfolios. Why the fuck not.
The fuck not because his prioritizing who to help based solely on the color of their skin. I don't know, I might be in the wrong here but that sounds extremely racist to me.
