Persona 5 Royal PC/PS5/Switch/Xbox Discussion Thread

Really enjoying Persona 5 Royal right now. P3R was decent, but you can tell just how much of an improvement Persona 5 is and how far the series has progressed.

- Far better story pacing that spans across real life and the metaverse / palaces
- Strong enemy characters (extremely lacking in P3R)
- Palaces / Dungeons that are a big improvement from P3R and P4, with interesting hooks to them
- The visuals look better to me than even P3R, just more density into the environments and more polish when it comes to style
- This game does not hold back on sensitive subjects. I was not expecting that first boss scenario. Glad they don't shy away from controversial subjects. Seems a lot more mature than previous Personas even though it's still in high school

I find myself not getting nearly as bored with social link activities and I'm really hooked on the story. Hope the other palaces/enemies hold up. Just beat the first one.

I loved Persona 3 Reload. I like the darker story and the 60 fps helps a lot.

I have gotten halfway through P4 Golden three times but ran out of steam. I found the dungeons tedious and the story not as interesting as P3. I recognize P4 is an excellent game but it seems not for me. I would have preferred P4 if it was just a visual novel.

I see P5 Royale is on sale on Xbox and wonder if I should take the plunge. I like visual novels and am ok with games with lots of reading. I heard there is 10 hours of hand holding before P5 opens up - that gives me pause.

My problem with JRPGs is I start them but run out of steam half way through, when the combat overstays its welcome. But if the story and gameplay loop are good enough I will finish it.

Does the combat in P5 stay fresh mid to late game? Or can you push through the combat quickly and get back to the social links which I find the best part of these games?

One of the things I like about the Atelier series is you don't need to do a lot of combat. It is mostly crafting and slice of life which is done very well.

You have a good understanding of Persona . Royal id say. Yes it has a long, hand holdy intro and eepetetive dialog and yes, combat stays fun. Probably my favorite combat in the series. You can breeze through combat pretty quick on normal difficulty as its an easy game but if I was you I'd stick to hard as it will be more fun and engaging that way. The dungeons are a huge step up from the other games btw in terms of being hand crafted and interesting.

I'm enjoying my time with P5 Royale a hell of a lot. It's the best in the series by far, IMHO.

These games are kind of a good "background game" to play for me. I don't need to speed run through it, but just sort of tackle an hour or two casually until I beat it after two months or more.

I say grab it if you like Persona, it's awesome.

Got Royal yesterday for the PS5 since it was 25 Eurodollars on Amazon and :
I really like what I'm playing and I'm in no way a JRPG fan but...it has this very cozy and relaxed atmosphere which after tearing my hair out trying to finish Lies of P the other day is just what the doctor ordered.

Thing is, I'm starting to understand what many people have been saying about it taking its sweet time until it gets going/respecting the player's time : I've been playing it for 3-4 hours and...I've been mostly watching cutscenes and interacting with others having barely fought 3-4 battles so far - and this game is 100hours long apparently ? Shit, I almost fell asleep a couple of times so far when playing it, hope I won't lose my interest cause this is way too slow so far for me (maybe I should have went with SMT5).

Another complaint would be the not so good/lazy remastering (lots of blurry textures/billboards etc), the bad IMO voice acting (hey, it's a JRPG after all) and generally speaking, I just don't see how this is considered one of the best games out there.

The fact that PS5 fans got screwed by having to rebuy a full priced version for that 60fps is also no bueno and super shitty.
I'm still so pissed off at Atlus for not allowing P5 Royal owners to upgrade to 60 fps.

There multiple "Fuck you's" to the fans by Atlas considering- 1. Many of us already bought the game TWICE. 2. Even if I wanted to rebuy P5 for the third time there's no way to transfer my progress over from ps4 version to ps5!

Its a disgraceful way to treat your fans and customers and one of the most egregious I've experienced in gaming in the last 10 years...which is saying a lot. Only second to Bungie and their "vaulting" aka taking away the ability to play literally $150 worth of content I bought in Destiny 2!

I'm closing in on the end of my +200h long playthrough. I've romanced every single chick in the game so I expect one hell of a valentines day as a farewell.
First Persona/SMT-game I've played and it's hard not to feel that...
Yeah, this game actually was just as good as everyone made it out to be. I'd say its still even somewhat underrated. Or rather that the series is criminally unrecognized in relation to its quality.

I also feel a slight a sense of relief tbh xD I accidentaly managed to stumble into the "true ending" content and while it was nice to get some additional party members and closure it felt a bit overwhelming going into it.
I can definitely see why people do multiple playthroughs, I didn't figure out how to really optimize/maximize confidants/money/persona builds etc. until well over 100h into the story.

Bought Metaphor Refantazio as well but I think I might have to wait a little while before playing it. I need some sort of palette cleanser inbetween. The craziest thing is that this is probably the first SEGA game I've played and really really liked.
We're lucky Atlus/P-studio picked up the turn based JRPG-ball that Square Enix kinda dropped (at least when it comes to the FF franchise).

Edit: Oh shit...

Edit: Damn, I actually feel a bit bad for him. My Joker is one hell of a slut. I did end up spending valentines day with Futaba though. I felt obligated tbh, realistically Sojiro should rightfully kick Jokers ass if he got the impression that Joker crushed her heart. Damn, that'd be a dark twist on the main concept. Joker showing up, teasing his adoptive daughter out of her tragic self isolated state only in order to destroy her trust in men in particular and humanity in general.

It's the most overrated Persona game by far. And Atlus has milked it to death. You have no idea what you're talking about. Go play SMT - Nocturne if you want to play an actual SMT game
Yeah I should probably check that out. I am indeed completely out my depth when it comes to debating the series as a whole.
Anyway, it's just sweet to "discover" stuff that has been around for a while but outside of ones periphery. High quality back catalogues. Be it games, music, films etc.

You probably also think Yakuza 0 is underrated?

The game is currently seen as "one of the best JRPGs or even best games ever", and the series got a huge boost following P5's release so we had P3P and P4G re-released and then a remake of Persona 3 even, so if this is underrated and unrecognized, I wonder how you would classify the game.

I finally fired up Persona 5 Royale after it spending a year on my Xbox Series X hard drive. I hesitated given the reported 100+ length.

I dearly love Persona 3 Reload - the atmosphere, dark story, characters, slick animation and butter smooth 60 FPS (on the Xbox). Tartarus is rather mindless but you can get through it easily. I've played P4G multiple times but only get about 50% through before running out of steam. I found the dungeon design and combat got tedious after a while, and I wasn't all that into the story. When the P4G remaster comes out, I'll try playing it again and will probably like it.

Metaphor bounced off me. I didn't find the characters or story that interesting. The art design / colour palette was not my cup of tea. Don't get my wrong - I love Atlus games but only some of their games hit the sweet spot for me (my favourite is Devil Survivor Overclocked on the 3DS).

P5R sure holds your hand and leads you by the nose for the first many hours. I guess that is the nature of modern games now. Hopefully it opens up soon. They really spiced up the dungeon design. I can see how the dungeon design (with the safe rooms) carried through to Metaphor.

JRPG's can suffer from bloat - too many mechanics and subsystems going on. One of the things I liked about P3R is the elegance of the game design - there is little bloat and you get to brass tacks quickly. I worry about bloat in P5R. We will see how it goes.

The combat so far has been super easy. I think after the first palace I'll bump it up to hard.

I've have it installed on pc but not played yet. Never played a persona game before. Not really played many jrpgs but want to try something different but I to am daunted by the 100hr playtime.

Prepare for 1 hour+ sections with no saving. And lots of keeping up with the calendar and hours of the day. But its worth it. Epic experience if you can make it to the end.

100 % achievements took me ~230 hours, but I let most of the scenes play out naturally, and with little clicking through to speed up.
