Abernic releasing sub $100 dual screen device soon

Depending on screen size I might be in. It doesn't look very big though so I'm not getting my hopes up.

I think I finally came around on emulation, and while I have a modded n3DS it's awfully small and my hands cramp up after like 30 minutes. Would love to go back and play some of my DS/3DS library as well as some of the old Pokemon games.

Edit: I also see Retroid released a Dual screen add on that works with their Retroid Pocket 5 which I almost bought a couple times.

Love how busy the handheld emulation device market is. Whatever one maker does, everyone else is on it within a few weeks.

I'm still not sure how well you can emulate DS/3DS without a resistive screen, though.
That said, this one at least will be affordable. Every other dual-screen device is way beyond $200 right now.

Loving the DS renaissance. Can't beat that price but I hope they produce some nice grips for it. I'll keep my order for Ayaneo's DS ..for now.

I owned a DS/3DS but never played it cause it felt horrible, I just emulated all the Zeldas on PC.

Press J to "255 the microphone input" ftw 🌬

I'm so in. DS and 3ds are terrible on emulators.

Besides an actual fucking ds with r4?

I'm so in! Their devices are good enough.

It's fun tinkering with this stuff and it doesn't break the bank.
Yeah, unlike the enthusiast stuff which seems extreme on the end of being ripped off, than value for money.

This looks super interesting. The AYN has a wider top screen, this one has same for both.

And the speakers are top facing as a result, so that's good.

The colours look amazing as well.

Very interested to grab this if it's really cheap.

The issue is going to be slow SoC and reportedly 4" screens.

Something like Ayn Thor would be a better bet, IMO, but it's 3x the price.

If this thing can emulate DS games at least a x3 resolution then I might actually get it.

Also in case anyone here isn't aware the reason you guys are seeing Dual Screen Handhelds seemingly coming out of the woodwork is because after 20 long years Nintendo's patent on the DS design finally expired so manufacturers are jumping in on this opportunity.

Substantially weaker than even the retroid pocket 3+. You'll be able to run DS games with Drastic fine, but it's lower end than what I'd consider. I'd at least what MelonDS to run well for retroachievement support which is questionable with this chip. Shouldn't expect much better from a $100 dual screen handheld though.

It should handle n64/dreamcast fine also. Probably a decent amount of PSP but you probably won't be wanting to run that on a 4:3 screen.

Yeah I don't think Ill be buying this. It's cool that it exists tho.

Anyone know enough about that chip to answer this question would it be able to run 3ds well? If not I'm not interested personally

Hopefully this influx of dualscreen devices will lead to efforts being made to improve 3DS emulation. The input lag on all the citra forks is really bad at the moment.

I haven't seen good 3ds emulation anywhere so far. I have the original hardware so if I really want to play something it's ok, but fuck those screens are tiny as shit. We need something more modern and bigger for sure, but the performance has to be there and it isn't in a lot of games.

Performance is there in Ayn Thor or Ayaneo Pocket DS. You just need to pay $300-400 for it (shipping, taxes, etc).

It sounds like for DS then it should be OK. For $100, that's still plenty reasonable, especially while 3DS emulation isn't amazing even on more powerful hardware.

640 x 480 is ... rough. Also doesn't scale that well, but it'll look okay I guess.

Resolution and scaling comparison
SystemNative Resolution (per screen)RG DS ResolutionScaling FactorAspect RatioResult
Nintendo DS / DSi256 × 192640 × 4802.5× (or 2× integer)4:3 → 4:3Very good. Integer 2× looks sharp with small borders, 2.5× slightly soft.
Nintendo 3DS (top)400 × 240640 × 480~1.6×~5:3 → 4:3Not ideal. Slight stretching or soft scaling, depending on emulator.
Nintendo 3DS (bottom)320 × 240640 × 4804:3 → 4:3Looks clean with integer scaling, no distortion.

But hey, it's still only $100

Those specs are terrible even for DS.
I had problems running some DS games with that chip on a single screen device on linux, cant imagine how much worse it's goind to be on 2 screens with android.

DS will be okay I think, 3DS probably not so much...

These look neat but I'm waiting on something with a bit more beef and 3DS emulation to mature a bit more before I replace my n3DS. I got lucky with the screen lottery so I'm good for a bit.

Can't beat a real 3DS.
If you dont have one already it's getting kind of expensive to find a 3DS in good condition.
I'd prefer a new device with newer chips, newer battery and newer displays over the real 3DS.
The premise would, of course, be that this device is also capable of playing the games like the OG DS or even better.
That doesn't seem to be the case yet, but we'll see, maybe in a year or two.

Can someone tell them that 640x480 is, by definition, not "HD"? Thanks.

To be precise - it's only 33% of the defintion of HD

720p = 1280 × 720 = 921 600 pixel
640×480 = 640 × 480 = 307 200 pixel

921600 / 307200 = 0.33

Even if you add both screens together, you don't even come close to a pixel density of 720p.

Unless we had some amazing emulator development in the last year, i've tried it even on a proper pc and still found quite a few games running at low framerate... infamously I can think of fire emblem at least.
Maybe I will try again if you say this is fixed nowadays

I'm not expecting much for less than $100. If it can play DS games, then I'm in (pending a review from Retro Game Corps).

I don't really want to pay hundreds of dollars at the moment. I'm not expecting something this cheap to handle 3DS.

I like playing the games that these form factors are made for. This would be a DS only retro handheld for me :)
