Arc Raiders |OT| Gaming's Next Mario 64 Moment™

Odd post. If you're expecting any game to hold launch numbers "months down the line", you'll be disappointed forever. People move on and play other games - and that's a good thing. Helldivers consistently posts 33k daily players, around 7% of it's peak. Baldur's Gate 3 - a single player game - consistently posts 50k daily players, around 6% of its peak. This is normal and indicates a game found a dedicated and active community of literally tens of thousands. On the other hand, Counter-Strike 2 posts north of 600k active players a day, around 33% of its peak - but it's free, runs on a potato, and is the most played video game in the world. So, if you're asking "Is Arc Raiders going to be one of the most played games of all time months from now?" the answer is almost certainly no. Will it have a dedicated and active community of literally tens of thousands? Absolutely. And if that somehow stops you from enjoying the game right now, then save your money and play Counter-Strike 2.

Well to be fair, every now and again a game comes out that does become the next big thing. Not something that's super popular for a month. You bring up Counter Strike but I think Fornite would be a better example. So I was basically asking if this was another Helldivers 2/Marvel Rivals situation, or am I really missing out on the next big thing. And I know nobody can predicte the future, but was just asking what people thought based on their experience with it.

I think it's the best MP experience I've had since destiny 1. For sure.

The next big thing? Yeah I think it'll set the bar for extraction shooters over Tarkov at this point. A genre that's been dominated by tarkov forever, and only hunt showdown has existed in that space until now. Much larger sucesss than Hunt IMO.

Unless they are slow to update, adapt, and layer on, then they should be in the drivers seat for this genres go to staple game.

Tarkov is still in alpha stage lol. Hunt is good but it has limited weapons and gameplay loop.

Ultimately it was up to this or marathon to be the king. I'd say get in ground level- it seems a hard game to pick up a year from now as it evolves.

Nice. My kid is starting to take a bit of an interesting in gaming, so I'm also looking for a fun game to play in the family room.

The correct and only method is a ton of wolf pack grenades. For example a rocketeer goes down to one and like 3 shots from a ferro. Makes them super easy to solo.

For the queen it's tough because cover isn't really a thing available in the area near where chucking a nade will be close enough.

I plan to attempt her solo once I amass 10+ wolf packs to go into the zone solo. Game plan will be to set up zip lines to be able to have an escape route, then come back in and chuck new nades.
I don't think thats possible unless they changed the HP on it. Surely you'd need around 50 nades?

Assuming they do around 500 damage i think they have at least 25k HP?

This might be a little tough for a 6 year to take, but I don't know how much pain and emotional suffering yours are built for lol.

I mean I was ripping spines out in Mortal Kombat was I was his age and was fine afterward. I've probably seen a grand total of 10 minutes of Arc Raiders, but it doesn't look too violent. Unless I've missed some gory moments.

Not about about any gore or x rated content, he's safe in that regard. I'm more on about getting dunked on by other players and losing all your stuff repeatedly. It can be brutal at times. Shit hurts and I'm almost at retirement age lol.

Ah yeah, that's actually a good point. He's still at that tender innocent age where little humans all love each other, and just want to play and hug. Might be a bad idea to expose him to the dark side of humanity at this stage.

Well there's some life lessons to be had here for sure. Just make sure you have plenty of tissues and hugs ready to go if you do get him into it.

This game in general is just far too complex for a 6 year old. Moving and shooting sure, but then you have all the crafting, item management, big words he can't read and more.

Not to be a dick but … unless you're raising the next Einstein why would you even think this is going to be something a 6 year old could play and have fun with?

Your kid is at the age where you can onboard with:
Nintendo games
Minecraft
Bluey video games

Mario wonder co op with the kiddo is a blast, and Minecraft is limitless fun with couch co op, both casually with building or survival for more non casual fun. Bluey is cool.

Also, do not be fooled : Lego games aren't easy for kids that age either. They're far too obtuse and require reading comprehension.

Lastly:
Roblox really is the best game but you are required to sit there, turn on all parental locks, and disable all chat features. The game is thousands of games and my son has hundreds of hours of fun we've had together. Race car games, running away games, platforming and so much more. There's a reason it's so popular but it requires parenting… if you want hands off fun this isn't it.

Tarkov is still in alpha stage lol.
Supposed to be fully releasing this month and coming to steam. Hope they've improved it a lot as the last time I played it was a buggy, janky and unoptimised mess. Shame original owners don't get a steam copy too.

Alright I bought it and played a game, but I have no idea what the hell I'm doing.
I haven't played a multiplayer game in a long time.
I kinda want to shoot everything that moves because it's honestly a little scary, but I don't wanna be the guy to shoot first. I probably ran into about 3 people. First guy was using emotes to ask if I wanted to team up, but I've never played so I don't wanna be a drag to a guy that is using emotes to communicate, so I just said "nah, I'm good" (not sure how proximity chat works tbh). Then I went into some big building and some other guy was leaving so we kinda just walked by each other in the hallway without saying anything. Then I saw a 3rd guy fighting a robot so I just started shooting the robot as well from above, then he left. After that I just decided to bail in the elevator thing because I was getting nervous.
Probably have to watch some youtube videos or something to get a hang on what I'm doing.

Am I supposed to play with a controller? I'm using mouse and keyboard, but to slide you have to use shift+ctrl which doesn't really seem practical.

Not watched it myself but this might help.

Wait, is this game doing matchmaking based on "aggression"..? I've seen several streamers say solo is really hard, and harder than playing in teams. But here I am, basically successfully extracting in peace every single time.. It has to be the matchmaking, right? and perhaps even pulling from the post match survey questions. But idk.

I've dipped my toes into a number of extraction shooters and nothing took... after playing for about 5 hours tonight I can't help but feel that someone finally nailed the perfect balance with the genre. Helps that it immediately pulls you in with fantastic presentation. The audio and visual design are AAA quality (with more soul). It's just a pleasure to be in the world they built. Mechanically it feels almost perfect, just some odd collision stuff now and then, but I love the punch of all the guns and particularly how the AI enemies react to the bullet hits. It just feels good. Things are also communicated nicely without feeling overbearing or frustrating. The menus and hub are super clear and easy to navigate. Just the right amount of information and guidance given, with the navigation top-side left perfectly ambiguous. On top of all that... it runs super well and getting into games has been seamless. I'm really impressed.

Also just saw Eurogamer's WIP review and they also mentioned that they haven't felt this way about a big multiplayer release since Destiny 1, so maybe you're onto something.

does anyone know why gaming media seems to have some kind of a boycott for this game? Only 6 reviews so far and nothing from the major ones.

I hope so, that's a really neat way of passively catering to individual play styles via matchmaking.

A lot of great forward thinking ideas have made it into this game, from the outside looking in its just a third person extraction game but under the hood it has a lot of new ideas.

Really nice to see a company try and break the mold in interesting ways.

Nobody was given review codes so I'd expect them in the next few days. Besides that you can't review a game like this effectively without experiencing being shot in the back by me at extraction multiple times :messenger_sunglasses:

well, think I just encountered my first cheater.

Was doing a small raid to gather supplies in the dam area, standing just inside the lower part of the water treatment facility and out of nowhere I take a headshot. It drops my shield down so I ran behind a 100% cover wall inside a room with nothing else in there. Take out my bandages and then boom, another headshot, seemingly through a wall from the hill way off outside that is not even possible.

Not sure it was lag or what but the guy didn't even come to loot me. I spectated my team mate for a min and a similar thing happened ro him minutes later, same guy, shooting through the wall

Streamers probably aggro everyone for show, if you play normally solo is super chill.

Report them after the match.

did do. Not sure how the devs are handling reports and hackers..
Seems like there's a chance you might get your stuff back.

I was on for a couple of hours last night, farmed a little apartment block that was full of wristwatches every time I went back. The whole session I never killed anyone or died, just had a couple of close encounters where I made people back off with a bloodied nose. Calling out "friendly" also works. Only time I raise my weapon is for the completely silent players who just strafe erratically in the dark for a moment, seemingly unaware they can use the "don't shoot" comms, before skulking off back into the shadows. These uneventful and mundane escapades are also quite absorbing, in a way. It's fascinating. Maybe they'll also become boring, as I'm generally not one for farming mats in video games normally. I now switch to mnk for inventory stuff when I'm back at home base, which helps.

My main complaint with the game now is that it's stopping me from playing Battlefield. I had this issue years ago with Destiny, I began to resent it for blocking off other games I fancied or wanted to play. Could happen again here, I recognise the pattern.

oh interesting. I wonder how far back that goes? they must be keeping track some how of items per raid and what is looted / dropped. I played about 5 more games since that incident..

He wouldn't play. He'd watch. He had a blast watching me play Monster Hunter Wilds, Super Castlevania IV, Dragon Quest.

I'm not having him watch me play this game anyway.

Dude, same here. Level 59 in bf6 and stopped almost cold turkey for this (level 12 now)

Trouble is you'll feel like you're falling behind on Arc and visa versa. I really needed these two games to release months apart.

I dunno, I've been waiting months and years for a precious PvP shooter to come out, and then two come along at once. Gah!

Prior to October I had been content picking away at single player stuff.

Feel you.

Marathon test came at the same time as well for me. Better to be stuffed and leave some on the plate than be starving. Nice problem to have if you ask me.

Don't sleep on the Berletta (the green pistol)! Thing slaps, has a fast reload, and good magazine size. With a blue extended mag it bring it to a whopping 27 rounds.

Anvil is my favorite gun. Wish I had the blueprint.

It hits just like the ferro but 6 shot clip. This allows you to melt arcs.

When you see someone and saying "hi raider" or "dont shoot" and suddenly 2 other guy says the same thing from different locations will never be not funny. Fucking rats everywhere :D

And I've instigated from another bush behind all of you by throwing a nade to watch you all unload, then I clean up.

Always funny.
