Half-Life 3 is in the Final Phase of Development – Rumour

Assuming it's actually happening (doubt it), what could the great new thing be? I remember back in my PC gaming days that the physics were nuts in that 2, and stacking shit up to be able to get to certain areas and of course the gravity gun.
With Alyx, VR was the great new thing, but it was beginner-friendly VR. A HL3 with more advanced VR mechanics and without Valve afraid of making the players motion sick, with the training wheels removed would be the next step. Going back to flatscreen is just regressing.

Honestly man, I think the fans mostly made up this scenario how each title has to push boundaries. I dony play HL because its going to introduce something new to the gaming industry, I play it for the lore and Id be satisfied with a brand new one with update graphics. Couldnt care less if its playable using telekinesis or if they invent fumes coming out of your pc/console so you can smell the environment. Just give me a good game.

ALSO something I ran into a week ago, I liek installing super old titles on my steam deck that I missed out on. Tresspasser from 1998 had ragdoll physics back then! Its insane, HL2 did it 6 years later yet this game went unnoticed and was kinda bad to begin with but it literally had object based ragdoll 6 years before HL2. Insane:

I recently played Aliens rogue incursion so I know it is totally possible to make a pancake version of Half-life Alyx. But someone at Valve was a big fan of the VR hype.

No it's not possible some things would have to be remade completely or removed

So in that way I guess it's possible if you don't want to play the exact same game

Dude I won't be able to handle a Half-Life 3 shadowdrop. I've got so much work this month. 😩

Rise and shine, Valve. Rise and shine.
Not that I wish to imply you have been sleeping on the job... well... lets just say (hopefully) your hour has come again :messenger_winking:

I really really hope that if they announce HL3, the game wont be VR exclusive.

Please 🙏
No way. Alyx was built for headset so that is understandable, but Valve still makes 99 percent of its money from Windows. It would be perhaps not be suicidal in their case to go VR exclusive, but it would not make financial sense to make it VR exclusive if it really has been in development all these years and not some recent work.

The next Half-Life game won't be tied to specific hardware. At best you'll see certain added functionality or features but nothing that will make it an entirely different experience.

It wouldn't be, Valve are too wise to do something like that.

So, anyone actually believe HL3 release is finally imminent? I'm still very skeptical, but man can you imagine if Valve actually shadow dropped HL3 out of the blue? That would be one for the history books for certain!

HL3 while I want it, will never live up to the legacy of 1 and 2.
While you're probably right, Valve is about the only developer that could find a way to make it happen. I don't think for a second they'd release HL3 unless they were completely confident that it's a banger. If I remember correctly (big if) there's been reports that it was nearly finished at one point, and they still scrapped it.
I might be making that up, though 🤣

Gabe has said they started and stopped many times. Valve makes so much off of steam they don't need to make games. If they did we would have something called HL 3. We have gotten some great things from them that are HL adjacent like Portal.

That would be pretty hilarious. It still wouldn't make me buy a VR set though.

I will tell you my experience. When Half Life Alyx was announced I bought VR headset immediately , just to play it. I thought it was a very good experience and a great game but I was constantly feeling sick, dizzy and tired. I was not able to play for more than 20 minutes straight. This is no way to enjoy a videogame. When I come home from work I am tired and exhausted and I want lay in the couch and play a game to relax. This is why I understood very quickly that VR is not for me, even though I tried other games I just dont enjoy it because it kills the reason why I play games, which is to relax and disconnect

If this is what Nick was talking about it won't be until next week.

Jez spoke of a big week, this week though.
today definitely is hardware day. we might see more then or teased for next week since valve has no events till early december. they gonna go all out marketing new stuff for next few weeks

If I had to guess, HL3 is really to push their new engine, which will be an entire Roblox/Fortnite ecosystem that will allow small teams to easily make much more advanced games than is capable in either of those engines.

Ah yes, the ~1h30 of footage from past conferences and marketing they've done of SQ42 where you cannot even go and buy it based on hype. Not available to buy on stores for years.

The biggest IQ scam ever

TBF one could argue that we got 1h of gameplay 7 years ago and nothing released since. I'm sure you realize that SQ42 and it's trailers are acting like marketing tools to bring more people into the universe.
And while I wouldn't call SC a scam, it definitively take way too much time. Not to mention the numerous... questionable decisions they made recently.

But this isn't a SC thread.

I loved Alyx, but I really hope HL3 isn't VR and doesn't necessitate the purchase of yet ANOTHER headset.

It would feel sort of unfair for long-time fans to not have a numbered half-life game be a traditional mouse/keyboard experience, IMO
