Rumor: Guerrilla Games next project is a multiplayer Horizon game, different from NCSoft MMO

Was hoping we'd get Horizon 3 to be a proper technical showcase for the end of the PS5 gen and multiplayer titles rarely push the boat out on that front. That said, if this means the real Horizon 3 gets pushed out to 2030 ish and gets to be a full on showcase PS6-exclusive instead, then I guess I don't mind so much.

They need to let that IP rest a while, I loved the first game and hated the second one and would be totally fine never playing another Horizon game again. Yeah the sequel looked better but the gameplay elements they added weren't fun, that grapple mechanic was super stiff and boring, the gliding was whatever and flying was fine except you couldn't do any attacks. Whenever you get a mount they make it the weakest it can be, why not let us have some fun and feel powerful in that world? They made the side characters all far more likeable than Aloy, and when we ended up with
two versions of her
it was even worse lol.

I would rather they started over with something else, maybe a 3rd person open world fantasy action RPG.

The world really would be a great place to explore in an mmo so that makes sense. Lots of places and lore to discover.

If they do it right, it should be excellent.
Was Horizon at any time really that popular to warrant all of these?
It sold like 30 million copies between the two games.

They most certainly have metrics on engagement

So, I'm back to the original question: why is the NCSoft game skipping PS5?
As I see it - NCSoft game is more of brand recognition game, similar to Diablo Immortal and mobile Destiny/Ratchet games. As it plays on PC via android wrapper - it doesn't really a multiplatform, just mobile game running on PC.
And GG is a proper MP/GaaS game that probably will be a PS5/PC multiplatform and bigger scale/sophistication

Horizon 3 is probably gonna be a cross-gen title. Can't see SIE of today putting up potentially $300 million on a 1P AAA launch title exclusive to a system just starting its install base from ground zero.

Either that or they do make a Horizon game for PS6 launch, but it'll be a smaller spinoff they can maximize focus of visuals on, but still get it developed relatively quickly and at a reasonable budget. And then Horizon 3 proper comes a bit later when the install base has bulked up some.

I mean, let's hope. But have you seen the leaked screenshots for early version of the GG game? It basically looked like Horizon: Sea of Thieves Temu Edition. It did not look particularly great.

So if GG's title ends up being something more wacky-looking along those lines (more refined visually but not drastically different-looking) and NCSoft's game looks the way it looks, I don't know if that's gonna sit well with PS5 fans of the IP. It'd be like when MS were yapping about the One X's power and then showcased it with Super Lucky's Tale. You have to know your game and know your audience, that's what I'm saying.

And you can have a Horizon Sea of Thieves Edition on PS5 (FWIW I think the character in the 2nd image looks good), just not in lieu or as a replacement to something which would clearly resonate with more of the fanbase like NCSoft's game from the looks of that. I'd say another issue here goes back to SIE's continuous problem with balancing their announcements. Someone over there should've foresaw the potential blowback from PS5 fans over the NCSoft game skipping PS5 (at least at launch), and should've ensured that their game would only be announced/revealed when GG had their version ready enough to do a proper reveal as well. At the very least that's what they should've done.

Because now the prevailing perception around GG's version among a lot online is, it's going to be some Sea of Thieves/Fortnite-looking game chasing their playstyles, based off the leaked images which are widely available. Getting a statement from GG assuring they're working on a Horizon GAAS for PS5 isn't necessarily reassuring when you have those leaked screenshots in the back of your mind. Even if those screenshots were from an early test build, is it really that realistic to expect a complete 180 shift in the art style? If there were, it would've happened by now, and there should've been enough for GG to at least tease a glimpse at the state of their Horizon GAAS as it is now, to wash away concerns of perceptions formed from those leaked screenshots.

However this type of stuff requires actually paying attention to and engaging with the community in online spaces to some degree, which isn't something SIE's been good at this gen (after the second and, seemingly, last good Showcase, not that 2023 disaster), on the whole. This is just more evidence of such. It always feels like with every announcement, something's just at least a little off.

The worse part about all of this is that this bolded part will cause market confusion. You can run two GAAS games based on Horizon and think they will both work.

It's a leak from ~2020~ aka 5 years ago. It's for sure some early prototype that will be changed in a number of ways.
I wouldn't make ANY assumption on final game based on this.
The dev build of Wolverine was just reskinned Spiderman and game came a long way since than. And Horizon MP game is even bigger time gap between leaked info and release (it's not even announced yet).

Some people do like dwell in the past.
Showcases are gone. Deal with it. In current market condition where short attention span is prevalent due to social media structure, it's make no sense to do Showcase and Sony switched to quarterly "big" SOP instead.
The next showcase we (maybe) will get is for PS6 launch.

There will be close to none overlap
West will got GG game on PS/PC and East will got NCSoft game on mobile. I am pretty sure that vast majority of western customers don't know and don't care about NCSoft games on mobile, no matter their names.

I enjoyed both Horizon games, but holy fuck if they end the trilogy with a multiplayer game that would be the most retarded thing ever. Even worse than concord. There is no fucking way they're not doing a singleplayer only game. I cannot fathom Guerilla wasting so many years on something that will most likely die in a week.

But we all saw the NCSoft video though. You can't make us unsee it. Maybe 80 million PS5 owners didn't see it, but rest assured that millions saw it. And some of us think it looked interesting. So at the very very minimum GG's Horizon Live Service game needs to look at least as good as NCSoft's or Sony will look like a complete freaking joke!

Especially when you consider GG should be working on Horizon 3 and NOT a Live Service game at all! It's a waste of their time and resources.

You know, forum dwellers are not really the main target for Horizon franchise. And 98% of main audience will not know/quickly forget about NCSoft video from presentation in Korea.
People really like to overstate their own importance.

Now after reading this thread, it looks like it's Sony that's keeping the game off of Playstation

They are working on multiple games aren't they? Multiplayer Horizon wouldn't surprise me (although the question why? comes up, but even if this exists I doubt its GAAS) as the actual next release but they are certainly working on Horizon 3 (PS6 release game?)

Wouldn't Sony fans prefer their big flagship game be a different IP? Horizon is so damn lame. I know everyone is starving for AAA, but dream a little bigger than just a new Horizon. Sheesh. Sony can put that money and effort into something you actually like.

They just announced Horizon sold 40M units in 8 years and a half, meaning the series is selling faster than Uncharted or TLOU, and obviously than Death Stranding, GoT, Days Gone, Bloodborne, Killzone etc.

Spider-Man achieved 50M back in February 2024, meaning it achieved it in 5 years in a half. It's the only Sony series that sold faster than Horizon, but isn't owned by Sony, part of that money goes to Disney.

So it's normal to see Sony and Guerrilla wanting to push the series forward.

Guerilla is oficially developing both in the non-GaaS single player Horizon 3 and the (a different console focused game, not this mobile game) GaaS multiplayer Horizon Online.

Plus overviewing & supporting the non-gaming Horizon adaptation, this mobile game and Physint (providing engine & development support as did in the two Death Stranding games).

And this is what we oficially know, they might be working in something else on top.

Sony are so clueless these days - Xbox could have won this generation if they were so totally incompetent also
Sony is performing better than ever this generation in almost all measurable metrics.

In several of them, also better than any other console maker in gaming history.

You're the clueless one.

What sucks about Horizon are the characters. The post-apocalyptic world it is set in is amazing. Hopefully Guerilla don't focus on the story and characters when it comes to their Horizon online game

I lost all faith in the studio after Horizon 2 sucked.

Now that they are making a MMO they are even worse. Eww. Man Sony has went to shit. Who even cares if their games are day and date anymore. What games?
This.

I really enjoyed the first horizon. Never bothered finishing the second, aloy was insufferable (in a way that she wasn't in the first), and I had zero investment in any of the characters. They spent so much attention on impeccably animating and acting fleshed out NPC's and side quests, but everything they said and had you do was beyond dull (I had similar issues with ff16).

The next game being multiplayer, my interest is well far into negative. Real shame as they were once a great studio.
