Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey - July 2026

This looks like shit. Troy at least was serviceable and the casting was great, but when I see Matt Damon I can't help but think of Team America. Also, I am sick of Tom Twinkland. Zendaya isn't really in this is she ?

She plays Athena.

Zendaya isn't really in this is she ? My favorite film adaptation of The Odyssey stars a real actor, a man's man, Armand Assante. It also didn't include Koreans and Africans cosplaying as Greeks. LOL Nolan strikes me as a guy that loves to huff his own farts... and my god please keep white liberal females away from translating anymore Greek myths.
Lol I like Matt Damon and all, but he really takes you out of the picture, doesn't he?

When he showed up in Oppenheimer, I nearly spit out my drink. Went from being immersed to feeling like I was watching a sketch

Christopher Nolan had A tier casting for his first 12 movies.

Now he has D/F tier casting for his 13th movie.

Something happened behind the scenes. Motherf**kers got leverage over our boy. He's been Taylor Sheridan'd.

The Hollywood gatekeeping changed hierarchies since 2018.

Man they really brainwashed people into thinking Zendaya is attractive lol. I remember growing up the actresses were smoking hot, nowadays you can find better looking women at the local Starbucks.

I am as a big of a Nolan fan there is but something about the casting to me of this just feels bad. I was 100% in support when Ledger was first announced for TDK when many were in opposition. I like Matt Damon but he's not the chameleon type of an actor I want for this movie. Also can't stand Holland or Zendaya and having them both in this just feels awful. In regards to Nolan I have always trusted his judgement but this is the 1st time where it is becoming very hard to, I hope I'm wrong like many were about Ledger. Is it possible this could be Nolan's first big "flop" and humbling?

My cynical take is that this story doesn't directly appeal to zoomers and millennials so he casted (or was forced to cast) actors that appeal to that demographic. Tom Holland is the Marvel guy and Zendaya is just very popular by default for some reason.

Just like there's no way a guy like Villeneuve casted Zendaya to star in Dune for her acting chops or appearance.

You might be right here, kind of like what he did with Katie Holmes in Batman Begins. At that point in his career though Nolan wasn't really established yet so I think he gets a pass but nowadays there is absolutely zero reason to bow to anyone. Nolan pretty much has a blank check with any studio and he's too big of a name to rely on cheap casting gimmicks to help drive box office #s.

I guess I'm fairly neutral on Zendaya. I'm not a superfan like some I've seen online but I also don't get why some are so negative on her.

A bit ago I saw a video where Villeneuve and Guadagnino talked about how good they thought she was and how much they enjoyed working with her. So perhaps Nolan sees something similar in her.

These are the most non-descript, bland, ahistorical costumes ever for a movie supposedly set in classical Greece. It's like they didn't put in any effort but simply repurposed costumes and designs that were originally meant for movies about Romans, Greek, Hebrews, Vikings, whatever.

I'm all for allowing creators to create their own vision and judging the final product for what it is after I've experienced it.

Whatever happened to creative license?

I wish I could see any creativity in any of the production photos ....

Remember how Nolan grew that field of corn and then sold it after filming. Well I heard he made a big investment in sack cloth for this movie.

History is resplendent with colour, I'll never understand this bland looking shit.

Didn't know this was in production until now.

Wish it had stayed that way because damn, I went from "OH SHIT OH SHIT!!!" to "oh... shit" in a matter of seconds.

And here we see Athena wondering how such a man, such a king, could let out such a smelly fart.

Zendaya destroyed Dune part 2, it's actually close to unwatchable because she's not only an annoying character (she's supposed to be the most devoted person to Paul but instead is an uptight bitch) but she also has zero range.

Hopefully she doesn't take this one down too.

It's like y'all never saw the latest Spider-Man movies, Zendaya is quite good in those.
If you haven't seen it you should check out Challengers, she's good in that. Like I said above, I don't really get the outpourings of negativity about her.

Her Chani was different than the book version but that's more of a choice with the script rather than her acting choices. It's also one I can understand becuase in the book Paul's conflict is internal but for the adaptation they externalised it and she becomes one of the pillars of that, with Jessica on the other side.

Someone please explain to me how Zendaya actually became a "thing", then again, it's the same thing with all the wrestlers/rap stars/singers turned "actors"...

Zero talent, charisma black hole
Hollywood has never been limited to professionally trained actors.
It looks for charisma, presence, marketability, physical ability, or a pre-existing fanbase — then gives people a chance.

Some cross over successfully. Some don't. That's normal. It has nothing to do with "zero talent." It's just how the industry has always worked.

Two of the biggest box office stars of their era and all time were a professional bodybuilder and a rapper: Arnold Schwarzenegger and Will Smith.
