Total War - 25th Anniversary Showcase - 04th December

If medieval 3 is in early pre-production, what did the main historical team work on for 5+ years?? Maybe the Game awards will reveal a historical title?

They hinted multiple times at taking the franchise "into the future." For sure it won't be an historical era.

Medieval III. Well, not my first choice, but anything is better than Warhammer. And I do love the Crusades. Europe marching into the Holy Land and fucking things up is always a good time (or fucking itself up, in the case of the Fourth Crusade, lmao).

The rumours about the cancelled WW1 Total War are probably true, it would make sense and explain why Medieval 3 is so early in development.
Vehicle mechanics could be reused between a 40K/Star Wars game and a WW1 game at least, same for infantry mechanics to a certain extent probably.
Of course WW1 would be harder still to do well hence why it's rumored they ran into issues with that project and cancelled it. Medieval 3 was probably their "safe" option for a historical game in case of an emergency.

But I also have to say that this stream was irritating. Firstly because they "sold" Medieval III as a B-Team effort, because they apparently are working on something bigger for the series. And that bigger thing wasn't even announced on that fucking stream. Just "watch Dorito Pope's shit to see the actual announcement!".

This shit should have been a blog post.

I am not sure why people are kvetching over a console port. All sorts of strategy games are ported to console these days. It's not 1997 anymore (but even back then, the big ones were ported too). You can plug in a mouse and the screens are nice and high definition.

I think TWWH is excellent but if you don't like that, this series hasn't had juice for a long time. Pharoah and 3K felt so blah. Hopefully Medieval 3 is good when it launches in 2035 or whatever.

pretty standard for these types of streams, they're usually a waste of time.

A lot of waffle but glad about Medieval 3.

"early pre-production" means this game is at least 3 years out.

I hope the Game Award announcement is something sooner.

A shadow drop would be great.

It's been so long that just a Medieval 2 clone with some enhancement would be fine. I just hope they don't fuck it up trying to be fancy.

Better to assume that this isn't a main Total War with its own mechanics and systems, like Rome or Empire, and is just going to be a modification of what they are already working on.
That wasn't the impression at all one got from the post reveal interview.

"Blood and gore is a key part of total war"

says the company who offers paid dlc for it.

They claim the reason is due to ratings and to prevent the game from having issues going on sale in certain countries.

But that could still be true if they were to make the blood and gore dlc free and just restrict it from sale in the countries where it would cause issues.

Warhammer ate up the entire franchise, it's where the money's at, historical games are just a side-project now or else you wouldn't have been waiting for a new mainline historical game since 2019.
It's sad for many I'm sure but it's the new reality of the franchise.

While I'm hyped for a 40K/SW game, I wouldn't be surprised if it became the final nail in the mainline historical games' coffin and all we got from then on was smaller saga historical games.

that reason has always been horse shit.

Clearly, but I also think CA likes the fantastical elements and the way they can mix things up in a way that is impossible with historical games. So I think it's partly creative and partly financial.

I recommend folks check out Field of Glory line of games.

Field of Glory II Medieval coupled with Field of Glory: Kingdoms is basically the Grand Strategy combo we wanted from Total War. Not quite as good combat wise perhaps but still it's a very interesting package.

If this was an obscure timeline like 17th century Pike & Shott, then I'd agree that it might look a little uncertain for the historical side.

However, this is Med 3. The most requested title by fans since 2006. Not only that, but it'll be on a brand new engine that could deliver the realistic brutal battles of the era.

As long as CA nail the launch, this will be the best selling historical Total War game of all time.

The game is in pre prod, they most likely don't even know how the game will be pieced together yet. A lot of stuff can happen between now and release, I won't hold my breath waiting for it.
Don't get me wrong, I really want the game to be the masterpiece I've always dreamed of since playing 2 but I legit think they announced this way too soon and there's way too much room for things to go wrong still.

Lords of the Realm if you want to go back even further than TW.

Hegemony Gold: Wars of Ancient Greece for a pretty neat spin on TW, where the battles take place on the strategy map.

I agree that we shouldn't be fapping into the night just yet. I've also dreamed of a Med 3, but current CA doesn't fill me with a lot of confidence. However, saying that, there were some positives. I like that they're trying to make it historically accurate (concept art looked very good) and the new engine was music to my ears and looked decent from the small preview we got. Saying that, all will be nothing if the AI is broke, both on the campaign and the battlefield. When were siege battles last decent in Total War? Med 2? Even then, the pathfinding was shit. There is no point giving the fans their dream Total War game with a new engine, only to release a buggy mess with broken AI.

Basically, if CA take their time and fix some of the common problems in Total War, then we could be looking at not just a return to form, but the best Total War game ever made. But at the moment that is a big 'IF'.
Not even a Medieval 2 Remastered lmao
Hey at least they're upgrading the engine.

That still might happen.

Feral Interactive were responsible for the remaster of Rome Total War (as well as the incredible mobile ports of Rome, Med 2 and Empire). It could be that they're on a Med 2 remaster for the 20th anniversary. They could use it to drum up hype for Med 3, kinda like how we got a Dawn of War remaster before Dawn of War 4.

Also, CA talked about bringing Total War to PS and Xbox. I'm not sure the PS5 and Xbox Series S/X would be able to handle these new Total War titles. I wonder if that means any Med 2 remaster would also drop on PS5 and Xbox? Either that or CA were talking about future PS and Xbox consoles?

Total War: 40k

Or I'm not interested

Did anyone else notice that somehow Walter white returned and is now working at CA?

Nagash looks cool but this game is too easy even on the hardest difficulty. I'm warhammered out.
