Digital Foundry: Silent Hill 2 Xbox Review - Big Cutbacks on Series S, Series X is Fine

FSR1, FSR2/3 and FSR4 are all separate things. FSR4 has nothing in common with previous versions.

It's like saying that checkerboard rendering from 2016 helped with PSSR development...
You repeat again again and again the same stupid script. So you say AMD haven't learned anything with FSR1 and FSR2? They have the same tech experience of Sony in the matter?

No you are irrational and childish. You refuse to use the logic.

Me? You can't handle that Sony fucked up something that other companies did very well, years ago. And FSR4 (temporal reconstruction using Ai/ML) is different than FSR2/3 (just temporal reconstruction), this is logic.

Seems more Sony has fucked up more your mind but I personally ignore the reason. You just console warring as always and it's useless speak with you.:messenger_weary: And it's incredibly how you reduce everything in a stupid race with companies which also work in an open enviroment vs a closed system a lot more "inflexible" to handle for obvious reasons.

Yep, people are ecstatic when games with PSSR issues are being released. Only I have problems with that, for sure...

Pay for the super duper console upgrade and end up with the worst looking version of the game, John summarized that very well here.

The real horror is the DF supposed "tech experts" 🙄 barely care to going in deep in the issue and clarify what's the possible cause. They can only say "ouch disgusting". No shit Sherlock 😆 But if that means to be tech expert and going deeply in the argument I'm the new John Carmak 😆😆😆😆

It will be handy (pardon the pun) for any next-gen HH system and IMO what we can expect to see in native HH games. Playing Silent Hill on my Rog Xbox Rog Alley X shows how demanding this game really is, it's miles off the Series S version

The Series S is a lovely little system, not having the same amount of RAM as the One X was its only mistake, but sadly an almighty cock up mistake
Oh yea, the S Console has most definitely trained devs on how to optimize for lower power machines. Even within the Xbox GDK ecosystem, it helps. I just meant that Series S won't affect the handheld SKUs directly as there's no handheld specific ports. It's why MS opted to use windows Xbox PC versions, they simply scale better.

And the handhelds will all have 24-32 gb LPDDR5X ram so should be no issue there. Series S training will help Switch 2 and PS6 handheld optimizations too.
$450 9-20w handheld device, it's $499 for the bundle.

Doesn't change this absolutely retarded point. Series S isn't portable nor is it designed around efficiency. S2 is very impressive tech for what it's able to pull off in such a tiny power profile, Series S has been an underpowered, underwhelming device since launch.
PS6 Handheld Canis is dockable, and Sony could be doing a TV variant of the Canis chip. Will that be underpowered too?

They explained very well that the issues are (in SHf, SH2, DD2 and others), watch the video and pay attention.

Folks talking smack on the Series S version, this is rumored to be coming to Switch 2 as well.

Hold yer horses.

Yeahhh... I expect Cronos level of difference, Lumen and Nanite turned off.

They never specified a single time such issue are not reliant to the PSSR but to how TAA upscaler affect some effects rendering at lower resolution buffer. DF love to flame the matter for the holy clickviewers than make tech insights.

Continue to believe it. That's fine.

I don't have to believe in anything, this is based on FACTS (tons of videos documenting it) - you just pretend that it isn't true, like flat earthers. Once PSSR 2.0 drops that fixes those issues I will happily say that Sony finally has good/great Ai reconstruction tech.

Such issues are notorious in all TAA upscaler and especially with raytracing. But the other major companies have years of experience to instruct developers and the "algorithm" to "mask" such problems. It's not something broken in the PSSR 😆 but thankfully next year such issues should be less visible.

Hypothetical hardware that isn't finalized nor even mass produced yet years away, what the actual fuck are you talking about?

Switch 2 isn't underpowered for today's hardware scene if you have even a remote clue of what you are talking about, its handily beating $1000+ AMD handhelds at raytracing at less than half the price.

No problems like that with TAA, TAAU, TSR, XESS, FSR2/3, FSR4, DLSS3/4. Problems with PSSR.

I guess it must be the devs/engine...

So you don't know enough the matter and never cared to going in deep to the issues of the TAA upscalers reading here and there. OK, that's fine. But maybe it's time to let it go.

Are you deliberately obtuse or what? AMD are years who try to refine the FSR. How Sony can achieve their experience with their first attempt? You are completely irrational. And what it's more ironical AMD collaborate with Sony to achieve the FSR4 result 😆 maybe even Sony is capable of doing a couple of things.

To be fair, this is still Sony's fault though. I believe they'll fix it with PSSR 2.0 in 2026 when they release their form of FSR4.

They are "new" somehow, probably they expected to encounter less issues easily fixable with the AI "magic", who knows.... Maybe they thought TAA upscaler was easier to develop.

K KeplerL2 has stated the specs for Canis, Orion, Magnus are pretty much final.

Canis = 16 CU RDNA5

Orion = 52 CU RDNA5

Magnus = 68 CU RDNA5

So the delta between Canis and Orion is very similar to the delta between Series S and X. It's actually bigger. If Sony mandates parity in order to release on PS6, will that be underpowered hardware then? Simple question.

Why would Sony mandate parity between Canis and Orion?
Because while MS has a fallback on the Xbox handhelds, Sony doesn't.

Windows/Xbox handhelds can simply run Xbox PC versions even if no Handheld Optimization, they can brute force with powerful hardware or using AutoSR, and get yearly upgrades to hardware. There's also Steam/Epic versions available.

Sony will need to mandate dev support for the handheld if they want it to be successful. I believe both Sony and MS can mandate optimization for two Console SKUs before they start pissing off devs.

For Sony, it would be Canis and Orion. For MS, it would be Magnus AT2, and maybe possibly Magnus AT3.

MLID said he read documents where Sony wants to use Canis to get PS4 holdouts to upgrade, possibly with a #299 or $349 TV variant of Canis handheld, without the battery or screen. So if Canis were to become PS4 replacement, it will need to play ALL PS6 gen games, thus mandatory support.

Same is true with you. If only one upscaler (out of many) produces issues, then the problem is with this particular upscaler or game/engine? What answer is more logical?
If the problem was just the upscaler shouldn't work well in any case. Never ever. It's enough logical for you?

The bolded is simply 100% not true. Even Steam Deck doesn't mandate every game released on Steam to be playable on it. There's just no way Sony will force every PS6 game to be playable on Canis. Sony doesn't even force PSSR for PS5 games that release on it and are "Pro" Ready.

It pretty much doesn't work with lumen correctly (and there are dozens of UE5 games), outside of Wukong that used 5.0 version of the engine (not officialy compatible with PSSR).

Underpowered is all about context. If its not a handheld targeting efficiency, then arguably yes, deliberately releasing an overpriced product that fails to deliver on its promised output and has dramatic hardware chokepoints (which is the Series S's problem with its terrible RAM setup), would be underpowered.

You posting some vague APU GPU-specific details is meaningless and has nothing to do with my post though. Point still stands, its an unreleased product we won't see for quite some time, anyone arguing about if its underpowered or not are being dense. Its also completely irrelevant to this discussion.

But then it won't be a full PS4 replacement without full PS6 game support. The hardware should actually be more efficient and more powerful than a Series S.

We shall see how things play out. But there are 50 million PS4 users that Sony wants them to upgrade badly. Canis is designed to act as both the handheld AND entry point console.

I'm lost now LOL! Considering the PS6 generation and every generation going forward will have more cross-gen games and a long transition than what we had from PS3 to PS4...........why wouldn't Canis being able to play every PS4 and PS5 game not be enough?

Bolded is certainly not happening aside from games with Low Power mode profiles.

Because Canis can't play EVERY PS5 game either, Sony would need to mandate every PS5 game be patched for Canis in order to continue being sold.

Canis being part of PS6 gen, with a RDNA5 gpu and Zen6C CPU, with all the upscaling and AI tech, it's better to have PS6 games run on the device than simply patching PS5 games.

It won't JUST be a handheld, was the point. According to MLID, Sony wants to do a PSTV style variant of Canis at $299 or $349 max.

For reference, I think neither the Series S nor Canis are underpowered. Series S Ram was low, yes, but that's because MS expected devs to use Sampler Feedback streaming. Sony won't make a mistake of having low RAM, they are using 24 GB LPDDR5X ram for Canis.
