Dragon Quest 7 Reimagined getting a demo on 1/7 for all platforms. Progress carries over.

I just played about 30ish mins on the Steam Deck OLED and whatever the game defaults to isn't great. I could boost a lot of graphic settings and still get 90fps. It's a pretty game but it can look a lot better if you tweak the settings. Haven't battled anything yet though.

Played it for 1h20m and I barely got to play the game yet, lots of fetch quests back and forth, talking with people. Still, it looks and plays as one would expect from a DQ.
Unlocked framerate gives me around 350fps. Vsync'd to 240 feels good.

Could use some DLSS options and Playstation glyphs.

I don't usually do this, but what the fuck is this post? The Switch version is 720/30 at best and the Switch 2 version is 1080p (possibly higher) 60fps. It's not "maybe" a higher frame rate, it's literally double the frame rate locked.

There's a drastic visual and performance difference between both version. It's a literal generational jump in resolution and frame rate.

Afraid so, yeah. It's not as ridiculous as what they did for the warrior in III, but it's there.

Makes me wonder what else they might have changed.
I hope not another type a and type b selection of character instead of male and female. But im not sure if this game is just one character male as a choice. I havent played this game yet even the OG.

This game has fixed party members, you don't create your own character.

No worries, you play as a boy.

Yup they successfully talked me out of buying the sw 2 version. Oh well.
Kind of curious how this would run on Switch 1 with SaltyNX and FPSLocker.

I've been playing Tales of Xillia on my OLED Switch 1 using these, and it runs at a fairly solid 60fps (even though the Switch version is only 30fps and there is no Switch 2 upgrade). Might be the case here too, and if so that'd make the Switch 1 version the clear winner with its actual physical card and OLED screen.

Played a bit. Seems cool. Definitely a different vibe from HD2D stuff. Just fully 3D rendered game with a fixed camera instead, like a higher budget Tokyo RPG Factory game. Cool to see the HexaDrive logo.

I downloaded the games on my legion go s. It's pretty, looks very dragon quest, but I am not sure if I will buy the full game. Definitely not for full price. The hd-2d releases are still in my backlog. I bought the previous remake on 3DS and never finished it but I eventually finished IX and XI.

I think they went too much, too fast with those remakes.
III HD-2D, Nov 14, 2024.
I & II HD-2D, Oct 30, 2025.
VII Remake, Feb 5, 2026.
Only around 3 months after their last I & II remake. Perhaps they want to recreate the Nintendo DS era where they release iv, v, and vi remake, bunches of dq side games (monsters), and IX in less than 4 years.

DQVII is basically the perfect Dragon Quest game. It's back to AAA-Dragon Quest (nothing against I/II & III ofc), but I've really missed the high budget style of VIII, XI etc. Insane production values and the game is so fun.

So do I have to finish the demo to get Maribel's demo costume in the full game or just start the demo? I'd rather play when the whole game comes out but I want the cool outfit too.

I am sure IX has great production value as well, perhaps the biggest production budget for nintendo handheld jrpg in that era. The DS really hold it back graphically, but fully 3D Dragon quest on that system still feels like magic.

I hope they remake VIII and IX with level 5 as developer again, and their internal team can concentrate for mainline titles.

Just reached the end of the demo after 7h. Got everyone up to level 11 and bought all the max'd out gear.

I really don't want this to end.

DQVII Reimagined is everything I ever wanted from this game. The scale, the slow burn, the mystery of the islands, all wrapped in modern presentation. It's exactly the game everyone deserves to play today in modern age where everything is just so damn fast (instant gratification).

Even without Toriyama and Sugiyama with us anymore, their soul is unmistakably here. The art, the melodies, the tone. This feels like Dragon Quest carrying their spirit forward rather than trying to replace it. DQVII Reimagined feels like the AAA Dragon Quest I have been waiting for since XI. And to be clear, this is not a knock on I&II or III HD. Those are great. This just hits on a completely different level.

Arsic Arsic I love it.

Played the demo on PS5 for an hour.

Plays like a dream and looks very good, definitely better that the 2D HD remakes. Music Is amazing.

Still, DQ is too damn classic for me. I buy most of them but barely play 1/4to 1/3 of the games. Plot, combat system, characters, dialogue, fanfare of menus, childish look of the enemies, everything is so backwards and classic, like something of the 80s or early 90s..at least this one design is a bit more modern than the HD 2D remakes, but the games seem as time capsules now...

Thats good. No issues. I only played one DQ game and that's DQ8 for Ps2. I hope they remake DQ8. DQ8 has a bigger world.
It's probably the next one in the line for the 3D remakes.

I think Square has two types of DQ remakes in the works:

-4, 5 and 6 will be HD-2D

-7, 8 and 9 will be fully 3D. Each one of these will have it's own style probably. 8 is probably the most requested one in the west and 9 is the most requested one in Japan.

Irs ridiculously good bro. I shelved the PSX version ages ago because I found it slow, boring and ugly.

On the contrary I can't stop playing this remake. Its just that good. The world building, the atmosphere, color, orchestrated OST, even the combat while still basic is souped up.

Again; please give FFVII this treatment and I forgive SE for what they did with that Remake game.

What are you guys talking about switch 2 isn't 720 30 fps.
Did you guys download the switch 1 version by mistake? 😂

I love everything about this. The way it looks, the way it plays, new stuff they added. I was always going to buy it but now it's day one.

Started playing it, and the graphics are cute. The voice acting is exceptional, and the world building is good as well so far.

Though why does DQ games still need to be so slow with everything. Like saving your game shouldn't take this long and shouldn't have this much dialogue. This slowness is with every little thing, like getting some important item - stays on screen for 10 seconds before you can clear it. This is in-built in all DQ games, but I hope they can start to make things snappier in newer games.

On the combat front, I started on hard and had some riveting fights with me just pressing attack 20 times as there is nothing else to use. If hard is meant to be tedious and mind-numbing, then I'll gladly do normal lol. I knew the combat was going to be lacking as with all DQ games, but maybe the job stuff might make up for it later on.

Having said all that, there is a certain charm to the game. The overworld is lovely and and the UI is also very nice. So far I'm intrigued as to how things are unfolding. Let's see.

ehh

The visual style is OK, but not as impressive as I was hoping. You play from a zoomed out perspective where you don't see much detail. The interiors are all these plain, ugly rectangular rooms with copy/pasted furniture and flat lighting.

That while "old school 16-bit tile-based graphics…but in 3D" aesthetic is starting to feel so played out for me.

I think even the 3DS version had more charm and visual appeal despite being on much weaker hardware. Here are some examples I stole from the Steam forums:

The "reimagined" looks soulless compared to the original. No charm at all, as if they didnt understand what made that art direction great.

Got to the second main island and stopped for the night. It's good! I'm glad to see they haven't toned down the bratty Maribel at all; she's still as insufferable and funny as ever. The visuals are usually fantastic, particularly the diorama-like overworld which makes me feel like I'm watching a stop-motion model come to life. Very much appreciate the variety of difficulty options as well.

On the visual differences between 3DS/Reimagined, I just see it as two different approaches. 3DS is going for a more dramatic flair while Reimagined is shooting for hyper-realistic miniature models. I think it's refreshing to have a game (in this day and age especially) try for something wholly new in terms of visuals. And I'm sure both games have roughly the same amount of copy/pasted furniture.

Fair enough if its deliberate pacing isn't your thing, but I've got to take exception with the dialogue comment. I think DQ's dialogue is honestly the best in the business. It's packed with personality, region-accurate dialects and turns of phrase, and well-used literary techniques (alliteration, metaphors, gimmicks like talking in rhyme or haiku) that you rarely see in other games. Besides their recent weird insistence on the singular "they" in some instances where it doesn't make sense, I wouldn't change a thing about the writing on a macro level. It's superb and makes me want to talk to all the NPCs.

Thought the same, but I was already complaining about censorship and didn't want to complain ever more about the visuals. :goog_relieved:

But yeah when compared to the 3DS version it looks kinda dull. Still cool that this remake exists for game preservation and all that, but I think I'll stick to the 3DS version unless I read about the remake improving on major aspects of the game.

With 7 incoming i'm looking forward to a bunch of new merch been released, Japan does it for pretty much every game. If i ever get trapped in a dungeon in real life i now have one chance of escaping as my chimera wing arrived today. Love it when they make real replicas of things from the DQ universe.

Dumped the demo and transferred it to my OLED Switch 1. These rotten fuckers put a hard cap on the FPS (overclocking + the usual framerate unlocks don't work). I'm absolutely sure this was done so that the Switch 2 wouldn't run the Switch 1 version of the game above 30fps.

I refuse to buy the keycard, and I'm not gonna be happy playing this on the Switch 1 with these limitations. Game is one of my least favorite DQ games anyway, I think I'm just going to skip this one.

I've always wondered how this translation work compares to the Japanese version. To me all the stuff you mentioned is like the heart and soul of DQ, and it's weird to think that it's all been done through the English translators and in Japan it's just standard anime writing.

bro, how old are you, really? If you think 3DS is "pretty modern", then all hope is lost

Yeah it's a real bummer. They obviously put a lot of work into all the models, but it's so let down by the ugly sterile flat lighting and zoomed out camera.

I really wanted to start this game and be like "holy shit, now this is what a Chrono Trigger remake should look like" but I'm not all that impressed. I still think Star Ocean: Second Story R did the "updated retro graphics" thing much better.

I wonder if that might be the kind of thing that one can fix via mods or ENBs.

But yeah I'm not impressed by the overall visual design. Some parts look cool but it can look quite dull and muted as well.

I keep reading praises for Star Ocean: Second Story R. Scenarios look better indeed but the clash between 2D sprites and all that cool 3D is a bit too much for me, but maybe I could get used to it. How's the game? I think the only Star Ocean game I've ever played is the first one for the SNES. :goog_relieved:
