Hey everyone. Continuing on to the next game of the franchise after playing and reviewing RE1HD in in the thread. I have to thank
The big difference and selling point of this game is the dual protagonist system. I don't know if in the original version of the game it worked the same but the seamless instant transitions between Rebecca and Billy were pretty cool, barring the annoying and clunky controls and menus. Thank God you could give the order to follow around automatically cuz twin sticks shtick doesn't work for me. The few times they both had to get separated and use their abilities to move the progression forward and rescue each other was a fun variation added to the game as well. The (very) limited inventory space was still as suffocating and annoying as it was in RE1, and after about the halfway point of the game I completely gave up on lugging stuff around with me and gathering it in safe spots; I'd just interact with it and mark it on the map for a future use if needed. Oh and speaking of the item placement and the map memory of said items was a good QoL addition over RE1.
People had told me this game was more difficult and unforgiving but I found it to be far easier than RE1. There were a few well placed jumpscares and a couple difficult encounters but I died only once through the game. I literally got tired of the tedious amounts of healing and bullets the game kept throwing at me, and just started walking past it. The puzzles were also straight forward and each key item that you picked you'd immediately know where/when to use it unlike the first game.
Story: I'd say it was barebones and contrived but I'm more than willing to give it a pass for both the game's age and genre. From my understanding this is a direct temporal prequel to RE1 and the events here happen a stones throw away atop the hill from where the iconic RE1 residence is placed. I'd say the first half of RE0 was more tightly paced and immersive (especially the train). The second half lost some of that momentum, and you could tell the story started to rush toward its conclusion. The final boss was *without spoilers* the androgenous looking slug dude in the intro sequence...a mediocre boss fight imo.
Overall I think this was a RE1-lite with experimental dual protagonist that were a fun novelty but I honestly prefer having a single protag. It was more RE so it was an enjoyable experience, but not great or memorable enough to warrant a revisit. Bonus points for Rebecca looking extra nice in the leather outfit.
Next up: I plan to play RE2. Not sure yet whether og or remake.
