Bob Weir (Grateful Dead) passes

This one absolutely stings me bad on a personal level. Glad I got to see him 3 consecutive nights at the Sphere last year with the Co. My parents took me to see The Dead towards the end of their run before Jerry passed. Weir was my guy in the band and he was a down to earth, wonderful man.

Going to play a handful of live shows in his honor today and probably through the next few days.

RIPPLE, Ace.

Yup. This one is a total bummer. The Dead are my all time favorite band. I usually don't go more than two or three days without listening to them. Last show I got to see of Bobby was with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra in November of 2024. Hearing some of my all time favorite songs that I have listened to for decades in an all new way was inspiring. The shear joy from the orchestra with the sing a longs and the huge ovations they got for parts of a song we never heard that way before was incredible. I will always be thankful that was the final way I got to experience Bobby live. RIP.

I wanted to add this as well. My dad passed away on June 1st, 2023. When I got in my car to leave the hospital, after he passed, the 1st song to come on was Brokedown Palace. Ten days later, I am at Wrigley Field to see Dead and Company, and the encore is none other than Brokedown Palace. I have seen so much live music in my life, and have never felt the emotion that I did as soon as those 1st notes hit. I never cried at a concert, but I did that night. It meant a lot to me, and that song means even more to me today.

Thanks of sharing this story, just beautiful how many people this band has touched like this. That's the power of music and art. The emotions it evokes.

Going home, going home
By the waterside, I will rest my bones
Listen to the river sing sweet songs
To rock my soul

Yeah, that's sad. Not many members left actually Bill Kreutzmann is the last living member.
Nice to see a thread about it here, that people still care.

Funny bedfellows:

I've been having a hard time with this loss, still. Been playing some studio albums and Workingman's Dead is my favorite one of those. I gave Mars Hotel a long overdue spin and was reminded how fantastic that one is too.

However, in my opinion, the live recordings are what you need to listen to in order to fully grasp the appeal and essence of who they were.

My personal best, in no order of live vinyl have from them…

-Cornell 5/8/77
-Dick's Picks: Pembroke Pines 5/22/77
-Dick's Picks: Filmore East 2/13/70-2/14/70
-Dick's Picks: Harper College 5/2/70
-Nassau 5/15/80-5/16/80
-Europe '72
-Veneta, OR 8/27/72

My parents were at that show from the video. Weir just slays this one!

Honestly Cornell 77 is overrated to me. I like To Terrapin May 28, 1977 Hartford much better.
I also love Dick's Picks 13 and 19 also some parts of DP 8 especially The Other One is fire.
Veneta, OR 8/27/72 is also great.
I also have to say that many Dave's Picks (not Dick's Picks) are more for the advanced listener of Grateful Dead (somehow that looks to me like that) But i love Dave's picks 29 from 1977.
RFK Stadium 6/10/73 is nice sounding too, epic Playing in the Band.
Right now i'm listening to the Nightfall of Diamonds show from 1989 which is surprisingly good on Spotify.

You just inspired me to listen to the RFK show. Playing in the Band is one of my favorite songs of all-time. Always love to hear different versions of their songs. Shit, man - come on over and let's play some stuff and discuss. Haha.

How do you listen to the Grateful Dead nowadays if i may ask? Do you use Spotify or something similar?
I have many many shows as FLAC on my PC but i also listen to the Dead on Spotify, currently i'm listening to Nightfall of Diamons live show from 1989 which is very good.
