Bob Weir, Grateful Dead Co-Founder and Guitarist, Dead at 78
Bob Weir, the singer-guitarist who co-founded the Grateful Dead and later found success with Dead & Company, has died at age 78.
I wanted to add this as well. My dad passed away on June 1st, 2023. When I got in my car to leave the hospital, after he passed, the 1st song to come on was Brokedown Palace. Ten days later, I am at Wrigley Field to see Dead and Company, and the encore is none other than Brokedown Palace. I have seen so much live music in my life, and have never felt the emotion that I did as soon as those 1st notes hit. I never cried at a concert, but I did that night. It meant a lot to me, and that song means even more to me today.
Isn't Mickey still around?Yeah, that's sad. Not many members left actually Bill Kreutzmann is the last living member.
Nice to see a thread about it here, that people still care.
I think yes, my bad.Isn't Mickey still around?
Funny bedfellows:
I've been having a hard time with this loss, still. Been playing some studio albums and Workingman's Dead is my favorite one of those. I gave Mars Hotel a long overdue spin and was reminded how fantastic that one is too.
However, in my opinion, the live recordings are what you need to listen to in order to fully grasp the appeal and essence of who they were.
My personal best, in no order of live vinyl have from them…

My parents were at that show from the video
You just inspired me to listen to the RFK show. Playing in the Band is one of my favorite songs of all-time. Always love to hear different versions of their songs. Shit, man - come on over and let's play some stuff and discuss. Haha.Honestly Cornell 77 is overrated to me. I like To Terrapin May 28, 1977 Hartford much better.
I also love Dick's Picks 13 and 19 also some parts of DP 8 especially The Other One is fire.
Veneta, OR 8/27/72 is also great.
I also have to say that many Dave's Picks (not Dick's Picks) are more for the advanced listener of Grateful Dead (somehow that looks to me like that) But i love Dave's picks 29 from 1977.
RFK Stadium 6/10/73 is nice sounding too, epic Playing in the Band.
Right now i'm listening to the Nightfall of Diamonds show from 1989 which is surprisingly good on Spotify.
How do you listen to the Grateful Dead nowadays if i may ask? Do you use Spotify or something similar? You just inspired me to listen to the RFK show. Playing in the Band is one of my favorite songs of all-time. Always love to hear different versions of their songs. Shit, man - come on over and let's play some stuff and discuss. Haha.
