Seems like I cant go wrong with any of them, but what is the best of this list in terms of story and gameplay?

Expedition, both in story and gameplay.

Octopath is good and so is Metaphor, but you settle into the same familiar combat patterns etc. Expedition is a complete package and also has some interesting combat augments and mechanics that keep it more interesting and for longer (imo)

How is Metaphor compared to the Persona games?

Voted for Trails even though I only briefly played the demo.

Didn't like Expedition.

Metaphor never ended up hooking me. Kind of want to give it another shot.

Octopath Traveler 0 demo was pretty good but I never ended up buying it.

Refantazio is my personal favourite from that list... but it's grindy, so be warned about that. I still love it though.

that's strange because I heard it was a very good game with 90+ in metacritic. Doesnt like a 6 to me.
It has a demo. Try it. If you like it, cool, tho I did buy it based on the demo, and the first few hours were really great, but at about half way in it became a generic predictable slog and I just could not relate to its boring political "mature" story. If you value your purchases based off Metacritic, then sure go ahead. Just remember, those are opinions, just like mine. No one can ever truly tell you what you will or wont enjoy.

I played the Metaphor demo and I pretty much didn't like anything about it. But somehow I keep feeling like I want to buy and play it. I think it just has an intriguing world. Yes, to some extent it is somewhat of a generic fantasy world, but there are also some really weird, out there stuff at play.

Trails in the Sky is by far the best game on that list. And it's the on-ramp to the best jrpg series (with the remake sequel coming out this year).

Metaphor.

- unique artstyle
- fast turn based combat, animation cancelling, smooth and quick, feels great, lower level enemies can be one-hit in open world, no need to go turn based (one of the best things imo)
- amazing music, love the fusion of monk chants and classical track remixes
- really cool world building, novel story and idea. What if you were isekai-ed to a fantasy land where everyone is a non-human and thus you're subjected to racism?
- Racism, politics and similar heavier stuff is a discussion rather than a forceful rant (that is seen in many Western approaches)
- the "archetypes" are basically Personas lol
- much relaxed than Persona 5 for deadlines,
- I like the loop, gameplay and characters, really cool characters (art)

Negatives: runs ass in PC ( use Vulkan ), AA is kinda bad, (subjective) there's still the usual JRPGs shenanigans and Atlus social VN stuff.

I'd go for either Metaphor or Trails, which I haven't played but gets a lot of positive feedback from gaffers I trust in the matter.

I haven't played Octopath 0 and didn't really like E33.

It's worse than the Persona games, but better than the other games on that list.
I'd say it's better in some areas, like writting and characters, while being worse in others, like dungeon design and overall polish and balance.

E33 if you want an excellent story with great writing. ~30 hours with no filler. I found the battle system to be very fun with how you can dodge/parry literally any attack once you learn the timing. Tons of combinations of skills/passives/equipment that can make you an OP badass.

Metaphor if you just really love the Persona formula and you need something that's similar but not quite as good. It has a cool story and premise but it just drags on forever and loses steam. By the 60 hour mark I started skipping most of the dialog except for the key scenes because it just goes on and on. I still thought it was a good game but nowhere near E33 for me.

Trails in the Sky remake: try the demo. I tried 3 times but couldn't even make it 15 minutes. Retarded dialog, squeaky voiced animu characters, characters who yap endlessly and make every dialog scene like 3x as long as it should be. I can't do this shit anymore. Some people absolutely eat this stuff up though, I guess.

It just felt like they copied too much of Persona while also trying to make the game seem "not Persona". Things like the calendar system and time slots per day make sense in a game like Persona because it was designed around that, whereas in Metaphor it feels like they copied it over without putting much thought into it.
It's not a bad game or anything though, and there were other things I liked about it.

I agree. When I mentioned "polish and balance" I was thiking how rushed the whole calendar system felt in comparison with the Persona games, and how easy it is to do everything when in the Persona games I never managed to do that at least on the first try. Game must have gone through a lot of reiterations and I can imagine the decision of including the Persona-like elements into the game was taken late into development.

I still enjoyed the game quite a lot but yeah, the are better JRPGs out there.

Expedition 33 imo

Cinema Expedition GIF

If you like to parry/dodge, play Expedition 33, that's the only good part about the game, together with the soundtrack. The story starts strong but in the long run it's a complete disappointment, especially in the later parts. The character interactions are subpar, they are basically a joke. Most characters are completely irrelevant.

Trails in the Sky 1st has great character interactions, the story is extremely slow burn but it builds up really well, and it delivers by the end. This is the first part of a complete story though, you will need to play Trails in the Sky 2nd too (coming out later this year). The turn-based combat system is fun, the field battle system is a bit too simple compared to the later entries.

I enjoyed Metaphor, but the story goes in a strange direction. Unfortunately the last act is rushed, and the villain does not live up to his introduction, he was a bit squandered. The Persona-style calendar system was completely unneeded. I found the combat system to be engaging from start to end personally.

I didn't play Octopath 0, just the first one. I didn't like the story structure of the original, but they changed that for 0 so it might be better.

My buddy doesn't play long JRPGs and he just put 120 hours into Octopath 0. He loved the story and said the game is very addicting.

You honestly can't go wrong with any of those. I've played about 10 hours for all of them and they all have their pros and cons.

I'll choose E33. I loved my limited time with it and plan to return to it this year to beat it. The soundtrack is amazing. Actually, all of these games have amazing soundtracks!

Come join us over at "12 games in 12 months", so you can beat them all this year! It's already motivated me to beat DQ1 Remastered 🙂
