Highguard Debuts on Steam with a peak CCU of 97k and 21% positive reviews

For the simple reason that this game flopping hard reflects terrible on him/his tga show, presenting this kind of shit as final trailer of the show even tho he made some big bucks, make him/his show lose status, before it was more or less bangers/games players were hyped for that got the crown jewel trailer spot, this year it was just shitty game, what comes next year, trailer fore some mobile gacha game as long as they fork up 10m usd for geoff?

He really wanted/did everything in his power to make this turd of a game succesful, ofc in the end quality of the product matters most, not marketting alone, hence the diseastrous results :D
Maybe has been debunked since but supposedly HighGuard didn't even have to pay for its slot at his show

25K is already a stretch, look at current player count, it's stuck at 16K~.
Yeah i was way too optimistic about the player count. It went up steadily when i posted this but its stalling for a while now. Probably 25K is more likely the peak now, we will see. It looks like its already in a death spiral on day two, yikes.

The trailer from a month ago was clearly 3v3. The narrow choke point during the siege phase would not play well with more players.

This isn't Battlefield. It's a MOBA. The large map size is to get you to weigh the cost of travel time against grabbing more loot and getting ganked.
You can see how its a bad desing when you gotta teleport to your base. Lazy solution

Isnt that common in a lot of mobas?
That mechanic is in every MOBA.
But this is not a MOBA. It's a bad mix of several genres. In this case, the teleportation conflicts directly with this:
The large map size is to get you to weigh the cost of travel time agains
If they would've implemented some minions/tower defense mechanics where you a traveling and building these spots for defense/ofense along with gathering resources (including one to enable you to fast travel) it would've make more sense and be more involved (more strategic) . In this current form looks like a lazy decision to prompt you the "solution".

I was thinking it was a moba oops!

I gave it another chance, it kinda growing on me lol. Game is not without issues thats for sure
The real issues are:
-Last game at TGA did absolutely hurt them. If it was in the middle this wouldn't have had this much backlash out the gate.
-No media blitz, no trailers, nothing. You have to hype people up.
-Launch issues with servers.
-Similar to concord they tested internally to create an echo chamber. Now issues like "oh it's only 3v3? That's bad" pop up.
-Same as prior point but no beta tests.

This is basically a guide to other developers of what NOT to do when trying to launch a new MP title in today's market.

Yeah just look at marathon. Months of beta testing did wonders to that game. This game still can be decent with a series of fixes, wont be super popular tho

I see Helldivers has another Warbond lined up behind the most recent one early next wedk and there's supposed to be a new storyline, which accompanies a major update usually.

Not sure about other games, but if any of the other top games bring updates, it'll really struggle to retain players.

It looks like it has a "curiosity" spike, but once that faded, it was downhill from there quite rapidly.

I don't think it was the negativity that solely hurt it. It had potential when it came out if it had something that hooked people, kind of like how Helldivers was relatively small until it exploded, but Highguard just doesn't seem to have that X factor.

Tries to do too many things, it seems.

For all the criticism about too big maps and not enough players, i think anyone thinking it was originally higher player counts is correct.

They had more players but reduced it. The game already has performance issues so they reduced it since it was even worse before.

It was probably a late decision and don't have time to adjust and rebalance the map. And they didn't want to tell gamers a month ago it's 3 vs 3 or else gamers would grill it as you could see by the trailer the maps were going to be pretty big with horse travel. It was never going to be COD sized kind of maps so telling it's small player count would be a turn off.

Where's this info from?

Seems to be answering a big question about the game right now, but it needs a source. Is there a dev quote on it?

It's been hovering in the upper 15k/lower 16k range for hours. Like there's an almost perfect balance between the usual influx of players throughout the day vs the rate at which people are giving up on the game.

Any predictions for today's peak?

Sub 20K then straight to 5K during the night/early morning.

I know I'm in the minority but the game is awesome. I think the map size is perfect for horse riding and gearing up phases.

I've had great matches with wins on offense, defense, and a wire to wire one where there were 5 points left between the teams.

Other than a few day 1 matchmaking issues I haven't had any tech issues either.

Looking forward to playing more.

I've done a 180 on it too. I've had a number of matches now where we have the stormbreaker looking down at the enemy base and both sides are picking at eachother for a while. It gives off a football goal line stand vibe which is really cool. Communicating with your teammates is a blast.

Internet (me as well) got this one wrong. It's fun.

Progression will be its downfall imo.

Same. The thing is, first impressions are not great, you need 3-4 matches to get the feel of the game. Not many people will give it that much time

I'll take a wild guess.

People still at work in heavy populated eastern time zone USA. People have a full day now to try it out after downloading it yesterday. And anyone in Europe (as people brought up) now caught up with the time zone with time to play.

It's at 18k now at 2pm est. I'll guess when it peaks around dinner time it'll hit 40-50k.

Agreed. Best horse riding game since:

Arc and Marvel Rivals are around their daily peak... I think 40K for Highguard will be a stretch. This game is in serious trouble.

This game looks like maybe they had a similar idea to deadlock but just couldn't figure it out.

Valve is taking their time, I mean did they ever even officially announce the game? And yet it's got 2-3x the concurrent players of this and seems to blend the moba elements way better.

Since a lot of people bring up maps too big/too few players, what screws the game up is they have faster horse travel. So they need the maps to be bigger than usual. No point having speedy horse riding in smaller maps.

Whether it's still too big is probably true going by some videos and people say, but that's got to be one reasons why they kept maps so big even though it's only 3 vs 3. It's like playing COD WaW back in the day and the tank maps made by Activision were bigger so you can have 2-3 tanks battling it out in tank lanes. But the player count stayed 6 vs 6. So if gamers avoided tanks or they were all destroyed at the moment until they respawn , the maps were too big for 6 vs 6 (Seelow and that map with the sniper church tower in the middle were the worst for this).

Concord did have a beta though. Nobody played it. Which is somehow even funnier.

I did play it a bit more, what a terrible game. There are a few nice ideas, but the individual parts never come together.

They tried to do some 3D moba dota like gameplay which doesn't work well because the dota gameplay is based off RTS controls where micro is the key. And even if they still wanna stick to this, they could have been more ambitious and make tons of npcs invading each other from three different paths across the maps and the player hero would need to support them so just like dota/leagues.

Or

They could have put a lot more players like 12 vs 12, 15v 15 or something. Sure that would be more hectic but it would definitely be more entertaining at least.

Not saying either of these would make the game be successful cause it's probably destined to fail but I bet it would have gotten more people interested or kept the interest longer at least.

The ccu is pathetic right now cause it's both a multiplayer and a free game on top of that so these numbers are complete garbage.

I figured the game would get to 35k or so today but it may struggle to reach 25k. Not good for only Day 2 and F2P. It may be at Concord numbers in a couple weeks
