Can someone explain the logic to me? Because I lean rather on the left with societal issues, but in Europe this is not even a conversation of not having voter ID - you need to present an ID document so they can check against the voters' list and mark that you have been given a voting card.

I guess this is probably something along the lines of "not everyone has an ID document, and you can't gate people's right to vote"?

The proposals for voting ID systems fall into 1 of 2 types. 1) Do it fast and leave some people unable to vote and 2) be very slow and plodding and do it without leaving people out. Conservatives like 1) because it benefits them short term and liberals like 2) because it benefits them short-term. Long-term its a wash.

If you wanna get an idea look at the Real ID rollout they've been trying to do for over a decade. Its requirement has been postponed repeatedly because it would have stopped americans from flying and would hurt tourism dollars.

Presumably you could use your existing ID be it Real ID or Driver's license in which case those scenarios wouldn't matter.

Reminds me of a joke I heard in architecture school. One of the fellow students from Indiana had a recording of two d-jays that he listened to "back home," and they said this:
