The practice is rooted in a misguided, unscientific belief that intentionally causing micro-fractures or trauma to the face will force the bones to heal thicker and stronger, resulting in a more "chiseled" or "masculine" facial structure.

2nd Edit: I really like the lore/worldbuilding on display here. Very theatrical. You can really feel the anguish of someone's fall from such great social heights when they unexpectedly get frame mogged by an ASU megachad with microcephaly but extreme shouldermaxx. As a reader, you know right then and there that the only clear resolution to this conflict is a fight to the death by full mog off.
