I think the man knocked it out of the park with every performance. And he was believable too. While his death doesn't sadden me, because he was of the age where it was expected. He made the world a little better with his art, and to that I will say, "thank you Mr. Duvall."
Sadly, we are going to see some great fall to the sands of time in the next few years, like Clinton Eastwood, Michael Douglas, Robert Dinero, Al Pacino, Samuel L. Jackson, Michael Caine, Morgan Freeman, Jack Nicholson, and so on.

The love story is a little unnecessary, but it's great otherwise. I've never been in a gunfight, but I think that's what a real shoot out in the old west what of been like. Open Range might be my favorite Western and that's saying something as I don't care for Costner at all.

Yeah elderly people shouldn't fall in love, it's unsightly. Haha but even so, I think it's there to drive home the hopeful, redemptive message.
Reminiscent of Rio Bravo in how it faces off against the grimdark cynicism other westerns were going with at the time.

It just didn't work for me and felt tacked on to tick off some studio checklist. Even though we disagree, if we were to meet in person, I'd gladly share a chocolate bar and cigar with you before we go out guns blazing.

Really loved him in Open Range. I usually rewatch that, Appaloosa, and Tombstone at least once a year.
Also love him in Deep Impact. He had this steady calming stoic effect whenever he was onscreen.

Highly underrated film. It just builds and is beautiful.
Fight me on this, but Costner has the best Western film repertoire, even better than Eastwood. Silverado, Wyatt Earp, Dances, Open Range, Horizon, Hatfields v McCoys, even Yellowstone against Rawhide. Duvall is no slouch in that area either.

The great part of that scene is the thugs befriend Duvall and Caine after the fight. A true mythical character. Really enjoyed that movie on 2nd viewing after not really digging it the first time due to its family friendly tone.
You didn't like it? I thought it was pretty good, that indian raid sequence was awesome. Old ass Costner trying to play what must be a 30 something drifter character...not so much
